Metric UnitsMetric Units have been used throughout this handbook and all Thorsman fixingsare made to Metric Standard.Recommended loads for the fixings should strictly speaking be listed inNewtons or Kilo Newtons (N or kN), as they are forces. But fixing calcula-tions generally, start from the weight of the fixture. For simplicity, we havechosen to give all loads in N or kN and suggests that the appropriate con-version of 1 kN = approximately 100 kg should be used.
Recommended LoadMethods of testing fixings vary between different manufacturers, whichmakes it difficult to compare test results. Our tests are performed in conjunction with internationally recognized test-ing institutes as well as tough tests on site. The test results presented in this book include a safety factor. Therefore, our recommended loads are sometimes lower than those of other manu-facturers. The loads recommended by Thorsman are not to be comparedto ultimate loads which are otherwise frequently used. Recommendedloads are safe, ultimate loads indicate failure point. For you, this means that the recommended load we give can be used incomplete safety.
Calculate the LoadIf you have only pull-out load, or shear load, you can easily determine theload per fixing point. But make allowance for any load which might beadded later and for any uneven distribution of the load over the fixingpoints.Often pull-out load appears together with shear load. Wall mountedshelves are one example. The pull-out load increases with the distancefrom the wall. In most cases it is sufficient to add an extra margin but beaware of the substantial pull-out load created in bracket fixings with highloads placed far out from the wall.
Choose the Fixing to suit the Base MaterialStudy the load recommendations given for the base material which com-pares best to your particular one.
ConcreteIn-situ concrete normally has a strength of 25 N/mm2 (called C25) or bet-ter. Precast structural components have considerably higher strength(C40–60).
Stone and RockThe same recommendations as for concrete can be used, but check forcracks.
Hollow Bricks and Building BlocksHollow building blocks are normally of a low compressive strength (5 N/mm2 or higher).Due to the relatively low strength of these building materials, there is alimit for the size of the expansion fixings which can be used without crack-ing the brick or block. That is why load recommendations for some fixingsare only given for the smaller sizes.
Solid Bricks and BlocksFixing in brick or block walls is one of the most common fixing situations. The strength of the wall depends on several factors which have to be con-sidered.• Individual strength of the Blocks or bricks• Strength of mortar joints• Workmanship in brick or block laying• Support of the wallFixing of light fixtures to a brick or block wall presents few problems. Try toavoid mortar joints. With increasing weight and larger fixings keep well away from mortar jointsand make sure that the bricks or blocks are not cracking. As a general rulea larger quantity of smaller fixings is safer than a few larger fixings.Fixing of heavy fixtures to a brick or block wall is not recommended unlessthe wall has been designed for that purpose.

Board materialsThe Thorsman cavity fixings are specialized fixings for plaster board/gyp-sum board, plywood, particle board, chipboard, sheetmetal and otherboard types where only one side of the material is accessible.Board materials vary in quality between countries and therefore it is diffi-cult to compare test results.Thorsman has chosen to test all its cavity fixings in well-definedScandinavian plasterboard (13 and 2x13 mm) as being the most commonboard material. We recommend only loads up to 80 kg to be fixed directly in board materi-als. Heavier loads must be fixed in the structural elements.
Through FixingNail plugs and Anchors are all through fixings. They can be inserted through the hole in the fixture and into the basematerial while the fixture is still in position. This is a great advantage inmany situations. To fix an electricial consumer unit with hammer fixings isas easy as this:Find the position of the first fixing point and drill the hole in the wall. Holdthe unit in position and hammer in the first fixing. With the unit still in posi-tion, drill through the remaining screw holes of the unit and into the wall forthe other fixings. Then hammer them in. No measuring or marking, theholes always line up.
Minimum Edge Distance and Internal SpacingDistance between the fixing point and nearest edge of the base materialshould exceed 5–10 times the hole diameter.Internal spacing between the fixing points should exceed 10–20 times thehole diameter. In cases where these rules are not applicable, the specific information isgiven in the technical data for the fixing.
CorrosionAll Steel Fixings must have a protection against corrosion in order to staysafe over a long time.Electroplated Steel is a common material with a glossy surface. It is suit-able for indoor and protected outdoor use.Hot Dip Galvanized Steel is a better protection even if the surface looksgrey and dull. It can be used even in unprotected outdoor applications andalso as a structural component.Acid Proof Stainless Steel is the most durable material and quite expen-sive. It is sometimes the only alternative in highly corrosive environmentswithin certain industries.
Excessive heatFixings made of plastic material are not suitable in environments with tem-peratures above 85 °C (185 °F).
Fire proof fixingsAlways consider the consequences of a fire. Do not use fixings made ofplastic for heavier fixtures in ceilings and on walls along fire escape routes.
A = 5 to 10 times thehole diameter.(Example: Hole diameter= 10 mm. A = 50 to 100mm.)
B = 10 to 20 times thehole diameter.

Basic Data
Description Plastic clip with pre-mounted screw, intended forindoor or outdoor mounting. For round cables.Corrosivity category C3.
Suitable forCan be fitted without drilling in double plaster-board, wood, board materials and lightweightconcrete with high density. Also suitable for hardmaterials like concrete or bricks, in combinationwith or without wall plug TP.
Material Clip: Impact resistant, UV-stabilized polypropy-lene (PP).Screw: Hardened and zinc/iron electroplatedsteel with Thorsman SECOR®. Corrosivity cate-gory C3.
Temperature rangeInstallation: -20 to +50 °C.In operation: -40 to +80 °C.
Advantages• Screw with high pitch and cross-slotted head
(Phillips) for quick and secure tightening withthe use of an electric screwdriver.
• Direct fixing in suitable materials without theuse of wall plugs will save plug costs and time. No need for plugs in concrete!
• Excellent function when fixing cables on plas-terboard with an underlying sheet steel frame.
• The screw will ensure an excellent fixing inmaterials suitable for screw fixing. This is anadvantage when fixing rigid, stout cables thatneed to be strongly bent in for instance exter-nal corners.
• To use an electric screwdriver to tighten ascrew instead of hammering in a nail can, insome cases, be more convenient.
• With the adjusted screw length, sizes 14-18, 18-22 and 22-26 allow mounting on the inside of double plasterboard, without the screw pro-truding on the other side of the wall.
Standards and regulations• Building regulations issued by National Board
of Housing, Building and Planning (BBR).• Thorsman SECOR® corrosion protection:
SS-EN ISO 12944-2.
Certificates• SITAC Technical Approval of Thorsman
SECOR® corrosion protection, No. 0035/04.• SITAC Technical Approval of Thorsman
SECOR® corrosion protection, No. 0007/03.
PackagingCardboard carton.
Application examples
Mounting in single 13 mm plasterboard. Useplastic plug TP1 yellow.
Mounting in double 13 mm plasterboard. Thelength of the screw of TCS 14-18, 18-22 and 22-26 is adjusted so as not to pass through bothboards, in order to facilitate the mounting of con-duits from the inside of the wall.
Mounting in a single 13 mm plasterboard with ametal bar behind, metal thickness 0.56 mm.
Mounting in wood, wood board materials, ply-wood.
Mounting in concrete and bricks. Drill a Ø 4 mmhole, approx. 30 mm deep. Drive the screwdirect in the drilled hole.
Mounting in lightweight concreate. Use plasticplug TP1 yellow. In lightweight concrete of higherdensity than 600, no pre-drilling or plugs areneeded.
