Good trade throughout. Premium grade young bulls at record levels. Commercial steers and
heifers were a good trade with customers for all weights and finish. 36 show cattle forward to
400ppk average 265ppk again with a full audience and competitive bidding. John Mellin and
Clare Cropper took the honours with seven prizes including four firsts with Champion Limousin
Heifer and Reserve Champion Blue steer. Thanks to Richard Mullaney of Hartshead Meats for
his expertise.
T & C Critchley’s first prize Limousin steer sold for 320ppk followed by their Limousin heifer at
310ppk. Ben Townsend’s first prize Blue heifer at 302ppk. It was good to see the return of S & P
J Scrivin with their prize winning Blue steer in the hands of the breeder. Best Traditional Heifer
was Rose Foster with her Aberdeen Angus, walking away with the E S Hartley traditional breed
cup. The well attended young farmer class was a difficult decision with so many worthy
contenders, Limousin taking three places won by Clare Cropper followed by Lee Hopwood and in
third place R Nutter’s heifer selling at 274ppk behind first prize 280ppk.
It was also good to welcome back students from Myerscough College. Harry Collinge showed the
British Blue X steer in the Young Farmer class with eager colleagues looking on. Harry went on
to present and sell in the ring, weighing in at 600kg and selling at a very respectable 242ppk to
Sanderson Butchers of Baxenden.
Cull cows similar trade to last week but less Continentals about and best quality dairy culls
averaging 110ppk. CHRISTMAS CULL COW SHOW NEXT WEEK WITH PROMISE OF GOOD
NUMBERS FORWARD.

A great turnout of cattle today with 68 milkers on offer to a packed ringside. Judge
Wick Williams had a tough task judging a very strong pedigree class and the prize
went to James Rogerson selling at £2,120 to Dave Coulthurst. The top price came
for a heifer from Jeremy Taylor which sold to Brian Blezard, Ribchester for £2,220.
Brian also bought a second heifer from Jeremy Taylor at £2,100. Rob Smith from
Samlesbury continued his excellent run of heifers selling 5 from £2,100 to £1,880
shared between W E & O Blockley, D Coulthurst and David Walmsley.
A total of 7 heifers passed the £2,000 barrier but the show of new calved cows was
exceptional. Frankland Farms, Rathmell sold two 2nd calvers at £1,800 each and
two heifers at £1,820 just beating George Whitwell’s first prize cow at £1,780.
In-calf heifers were in very short supply with Michael Tomlinson taking the top price
of £1,300 to John Hough. Today we had cattle from Blackpool, Kendal, Ripon,
Huddersfield, Halifax, Gargrave and most places inbetween.
Thanks to everyone who brought cattle and a special thank you to the dairy staff for
their effort.
NEXT WEEK WE EXPECT 30+ MILKERS. Thursday 15th is Cogent Pedigree

A very pleasing entry of 181 calves the week after our Christmas Show and a
good trade for all the Continentals. Herefords and Angus, especially with named
sires were very good indeed to sell. Remember next Thursday is Hereford
Incentive week, so we would expect a few more about.
49 Blue bulls and 28 Blue heifers. A lovely run of young calves from Joss
Lancaster. Bulls £430, £420, £418, £410 & £370 and heifers £365 x 2, £340 &
£328. Paul and John Cowgill a trio of bulls at £425.
A few more Limousins about today, a beauty from John Baxandall topped the
bulls at £420.
The best dairy bulls could make £100 plus today, mediums £60-£70 and
averaged £45 including bobbies.
Next Thursday is our CHRISTMAS SHOW OF STIRKS following the sale of
calves. We would expect 50 plus approx. 12.30pm start, providing a range of
dairy bred and suckler bred cattle generally 6-12 months old. We have an entry
of 6 pure bred Hereford bulls at 6 months old and encourage other vendors to
please ring the office on 01200 441351 with approximate entries by Tuesday
lunchtime for advertising purposes. Thank you.

Auctioneer’s comment:
Trade better than anticipated, with the majority of Texel lambs £30-32 above their
weight. A smart run of lambs from M & WM Berry sold to a top of £90 or 1.89ppk.
Very few horned and Mule lambs forward, however well fleshed lambs sold well,
with 40kg Swales from Hartleys of Pendleside realising £55.50. Ewes sold well,
topping at £85 for a pen of Suffolks from J Peel. Plenty of heavy ewes £80+. Mule
ewes topped at £58, with leaner sorts either side of £48.

More consistent numbers and and fed cattle forward. Continental young bulls good
trade , black and white bulls very lean and a better trade than they looked on paper.
Over half of the steers and heifers were in the premium grade up to 260ppk and
averaged over 230ppk. Good numbers of cull cows forward with premium grade
continentals averaging 150ppk with help from the champion Blue cow at 208ppk
and Reserve Champion red Limousin at 174ppk. Better fleshed dairy culls forward
with best quality 105ppk to 115ppk consistently and leaner types 75ppk to 95ppk.

It was a strong Limousin bull from John Ibison which topped the market at £480 today, closely
followed by Roger Vickery’s blue bull at £468. Forty four blue bulls averaged £328 for all quality.
Thirty eight blue heifers would be a shade easier than last week. A beauty from Graham Airey
at £430 topped the market and still plenty of the better sorts £300 to £350.
Black and white bulls were significantly better to sell today. Angus would seem less on paper,
but the quality forward today would not compare to recent weeks.
Today was our Christmas Show of Stirks kindly sponsored by West Craven Insurance Services
Ltd. There were 108 forward for Judge John Swann to choose from. A very nice entry of mainly
suckler bred cattle today, generally around the 6-9 months old.
Frankland Farms, Rathmell took Champion and Reserve Champion with their first prize blue x
heifer at £890 and their first prize blue x bull at £710 respectively, both returning to
Boroughbridge with the judge!
Frankland Farms also took both third prizes too with a bull at £740 and heifer at £810. Second
prize male went to D M & R E Capstick with a young steer at £765 and second prize heifer a
black Limousin x from R & A J Haworth sold for £740.

Auctioneer’s comment: (Will Alexander)
The Christmas Show drew a big entry of 959 lambs. A fantastic run of show lambs
were put forward to the Judge Andy Finch, Dunbia. Taking the Champion Rosette
was the first prize pen of 40kg and under trimmed Beltex lambs from Proctors
Farms, weighing at 38kg these later sold for the days top price of £134 or 356ppk
to Croppers Butchers of Accrington Market. Both the purchaser and the judge
commented on the quality of these lambs, putting them amongst the very best

W A & A Booth of Feizor took the Championship today when judge Philip Halhead tapped his
heifer forward out of a very strong class by Golden Oaks Alexander and out of a VG86G Dam
which sold to Hill & Davies, Wrexham for £2200.00. The reserve champion came from another
regular vendor James Rogerson who sold at £2200.00 to David Coulthurst of Longridge. Cow
trade was equally as good with Frankland Farms, Rathmell taking first prize with a homebred
Lavanguard 2nd calver selling to T & M Green, Wigan.
There was a superb show today and the dairy team did a great job especially with the young
stock from G Donkin. Bulling heifers made to £980.00 and £970.00 with yearlings either side of
£700.00.
Next week we have already entries of 30 milkers from regular vendors who don’t want to milk
over the Christmas period!

190 Calves and stirks and a very nice trade indeed for all breeds. Blues dominated the
numbers again, 42 bulls regularly £370 to £430 and 41 heifers, the better sorts £350-£415. A
real mixture of Angus bulls, but a couple of beauties worth a mention at £365 and £342 from
Joe Pemberton and Kate Bailey respectively. David Mattinson’s and Alec Simpson’s
Simmental bulls were keenly bid for £320-£395. Good black Limousin Heifers from Cumbria
could easily make £300-£350. The Black and White bulls were better to sell again today. It
was not stirk week this week, but five turned up anyway. Four proper black Friesian bulls at
£265 and a blue bull at £550. Please ring the office 01200 441351 by next Tuesday lunchtime
with anticipated stirk entries for next Thursday. Thank you.

Surprisingly not a big clear out of calves before Christmas but a good trade all
round for all breeds We do have a sale of calves next Thursday but do not
anticipate a huge show, then 3 busy sales in January
Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Auctioneer’s comment:
Over 1000 lambs forward, selling to a slightly easier trade than seen over the past
few days, to average 168.5ppk. Lambs short of finish hard to place, whilst well
fleshed Texel lambs from WH & JW Hartley at 44kg realised £80.50. Best meat 42-
45kg lambs generally £75-£80. Heavy weight lambs topped the day, with a 50kg
Texel from R Miller at £90.50. Top price per kilo came from R & H Critchley at
1.97ppk.
255 ewes sold to a top of £116 for a Suffolk x ewe from John Lancaster, best £90+.
Horned sheep from Ross Greenwood to £48, and a pen of 47 Scotch Blackfaces
from the same home to £41.50.
