Dear Members,
Welcome to August at the Center. August is a month known for many historical events. One of my favorites is the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution (which provides the vote for us ladies) was adopted ninety-four years ago in August. Giving women the vote was a victory for men and women alike! August is also known as “National Catfish Month” and, as a teacher for many years, my other favorite “Get Ready for Kindergarten Month”. At your United Irish Cultural Center, August is known as “We Will Be Closed for Awhile, But Wonderful Things Will Be Happening Month!”
During the UICC period of August closing (August 11th through August 25th), the UICC Board Room will get new life thanks to the 32/50 Club’s funding of new flooring. Also, new carpet will grace the stairs from the second to the third floor. The Board Room will have a new coat of paint, and the ladies’ room on the 2nd floor will undergo a wonderful renovation and renewal with new sinks, lighting, counter tops, and painting. Your UICC Library will have new flooring as well. In addition, there will be intensive professional cleaning throughout the Center.
During August, your Board of Directors will be putting the calendar for the 2014 - 2015 year together. All clubs and those who wish to reserve rooms for celebrations of all kinds are encouraged to get their preferred dates on the calendar during this month. Your September UICC Bulletin will contain a comprehensive calendar for the UICC’s forthcoming 40th anniversary year.
Meanwhile, your Board of Directors sends a special wish to all members for an enjoyable month of August. While most of us are not “getting ready for kindergarten”, all of us will be looking forward to one of the best-ever years at the Center.
In Caring and Unity,
Judith Kell, PresidentUICC Board of Directors
