STATEMENT OF PROGRAM GOALSThrough its program o Fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to
increase the diversity o the nations college and university acul-
ties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize
the educational benefts o diversity, and to increase the number
o proessors who can and will use diversity as a resource or
enriching the education o all students.
PREDOCTORAL AWARDS
This year the program will award approximately 60 predoctoralellowships. These ellowships provide three years o support
or individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a Doctor o
Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor o Science (Sc.D.) degree.
Predoctoral ellowships will be awarded in a national competi-
tion administered by the National Research Council (NRC) o
the National Academies on behal o the Ford Foundation. The
awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment o the
review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achieve-
ment, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the
college or university level, show promise o uture achievement
as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity
as a resource or enriching the education o all students.
ELIGIBILITYEligibility to apply or a predoctoral ellowship is limited to:
Allcitizens,nationals,andpermanentresidents(holders
o a Permanent Resident Card) o the United States, and
individuals granted deerred action status under the Deerred
Action or Childhood Arrivals Program, regardless o race,
national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual
orientation,
Individualswithevidenceofsuperioracademicachievement
(such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other
designations),
Individualscommittedtoacareerinteachingandresearchat
the college or university level,
Individualsenrolledinorplanningtoenrollinaneligible
research-based (dissertation-required), program leading to
a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a non-proprietary U.S. educational
institution,
Individualswhorequireaminimumofthreeyearsstudyto
complete their Ph.D./Sc.D. degree as o the 2014 all semester,
and
Individualswhohavenotearnedadoctoraldegreeatany
time, in any feld.
Receipt of the fellowship award is conditioned upon each
awardee providing satisfactory documentation that he or she
meets the eligibility requirements.

Applications will be evaluated by panels o distinguished
scholars selected by the National Academies. The panels wi
use academic records, essays, letters o recommendation, th
application itsel, and other appropriate materials as the basi
determining the extent to which candidates meet the eligibilit
requirementsandtheselectioncriteria.Reviewpanelsmay
look at additional actors such as the suitability o the propos
institution or the applicants plan o graduate study and the
likelihoodthattheywillrequireaminimumofthreeyearstoc
plete their Ph.D./Sc.D. study as o the 2014 all semester.
ELIGIBLEFIELDSOFSTUDYAwards will be made or study in research-based Ph.D. or
Sc.D. programs that include the ollowing major disciplines a
related interdisciplinary felds: American studies, anthropol-
ogy, archaeology, art and theater history, astronomy, chemist
communications, computer science, cultural studies, earth
sciences, economics, engineering, ethnic studies, ethnomusi
ogy, geography, history, international relations, language, lie
sciences, linguistics, literature, mathematics, perormance st
philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religious
studies, sociology, urban planning, and womens studies. Als
eligible are interdisciplinary ethnic studies programs, such as
Arican American studies and Native American studies, and
other interdisciplinary programs, such as area studies, peace
studies, and social justice. Research-based felds o educati
are eligible i the major feld o study is listed above and is use
to describe the Ph.D. or Sc.D. program o the applicant (e.g.,
sociology o education, anthropology and education).
Individualsenrolledinthefollowingpractice-orientedprogra
will not be supported: administration, audiology, business,
consumer studies, curriculum development, education policy
human resource management, exercise physiology, flmmak-
ing, fne arts, guidance, kinesiology, leadership, library and
inormation science, management, nursing, occupational hea
perorming arts, personnel, physical education, physical ther

public health, rehabilitation science, speech pathology, social
welfare,socialwork,andteachereducation.Inaddition,awards
will not be made or work leading to terminal masters degrees,
the Ed.D. degree, the degrees o Doctor o Fine Arts (D.F.A.) or
Doctor o Psychology (Psy.D.), or proessional degrees in such
areas as medicine, law, and public health, or or study in joint
degreeprogramssuchastheM.D./Ph.D.,J.D./Ph.D.,andM.F.A./
Ph.D. This program does not support the Ph.D. portion o a dual-
degreeprogram.Interdisciplinaryareasofstudythathavemajor
content in ineligible felds listed above will not be included in thecompetition.
FELLOWSHIP INSTITUTIONFellowships are tenable at any ully accredited, nonproft, non-
proprietary U.S. institution o higher education oering a Ph.D.
or Sc.D. degree in the eligible felds o study. All arrangements
or acceptance into a doctoral program at the chosen institution
are the responsibility o the applicant. An applicant need not be
accepted by the chosen institution at the time o application.
PREVIOUS GRADUATE STUDYPredoctoral ellowships are intended or students who have
enrolled or plan to enroll in a Ph.D. or Sc.D. program no later than
all 2014, including:
Undergraduatesintheirsenioryear,
Individualswhohavecompletedundergraduatestudy,
Individualswhohavecompletedsomegraduatestudy,and
IndividualsalreadyenrolledinaPh.D.orSc.D.program
who provide evidence that they can ully utilize a three-year
fellowshipaward.Avericationformafrmingthisisrequired
or those in a graduate program or which Ford Foundation
support is sought.

Fellows who have volunteered to provide mentoring and
support to current ellows
TENUREFellowship recipients must begin the frst years tenure on
September 1, 2014, and must remain on tenure ull-time or the
academic year. Ater the frst year o ellowship tenure, ellows
may choose to deer unding or up to two years. All three years
o support must be used within a fve-year period.
CONDITIONS OF FELLOWSHIPSPredoctoralfellowsarerequiredtoenrollfull-timeinaprogram
leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree in an eligible, research-based
(dissertation-required)programofstudy.Studentsenrolledin
a terminal masters program will not be supported. Those who
accept a predoctoral ellowship must agree to the stipulations
in the Terms o Appointment or Ford Foundation Fellows that
accompaniestheawardnotication.Inaddition,FordFellows
must agree to participate in regular updates o the Directory o
Ford Fellows, as well as periodic surveys designed to demon-
strate the impact o this program.

tion fellowships for students who have completed all the requ
ments for the Ph.D. or Sc.D. except for writing a dissertation,
