CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
That was (or still is) an irritating advertising tag line for some product—a phone plan provider, I think. But it’s an appropriate question to ask now that our sound system installation is almost completed. The only major part left to install should be in by the time you read this, though it only af-fects the choir which, sadly, we won’t be able to hear for God only knows how long. But now, everything is new: microphones, controls, speakers, so you will hopefully hear everything you should hear minus squeaks and feedback. And Fr. Dan and I each have our own cordless microphones, with each set to accommodate our distinctive voices.
There is one more feature, though, which is available in one form now, and will be ready in another format in the new year: a sound loop for the hear-ing impaired. Right now, we have four “body packs”—the cordless kind Fr. Dan and I use at mass. These come with ear buds, but they would have to be reserved in advance and they would allow anyone who might still have difficulty hearing to personally adjust the volume. The issue these days would be with the ear buds, which would have to be sanitized after each use. But sometime in January, a more convenient option will be avail-able for those who have smart phones. You will be able to download an APP to your phone which will connect you to the church sound system, and you can use your own ear buds to listen at whatever volume you re-quire. We’ll let you know when that’s ready.
Even though everything is essentially complete, the technicians from the company that installed the system will come back next year whenever our capacity limit is lifted and they will be present at weekend Masses to moni-tor the sound in real time, with more people in attendance than can be ac-commodated now. The simple reason for that is that more bodies absorb more sound, and as of now the sound has only been tested with a nearly empty church. We’re fortunate that the folks from Last Pew Sound, an amazing company out of Niles, Michigan, have been so generous with their expertise in this past month—for a significantly lower cost than the other companies who bid on our project.
So, this was the second-to-last project related to the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. Widened sidewalks and more lighting between the park-ing lot and church, renovated washrooms, new boilers and a new, large handicapped accessible meeting room in the school had all been completed at less cost than had been anticipated. And, as of last month, your actual contributions to the campaign were quickly approaching $1,000,000 of the 1.2 million pledged nearly five years ago, leaving us with a bit more of a cushion in parish savings. Thank you! The final project, though, will be a small one: the replacement of the dirty, worn-out carpeting in the Cry Room with a soft tile or linoleum which will be far easier to maintain, but also safe for little ones—whenever it’s possible to make use of that space again! But for now, please enjoy the new sound system and be sure to let me know if you can’t “hear us now.” Fr. Bob

THE JOURNEY
Advent comes along every year
and will continue to do so until
Jesus returns. As this season
draws to a close, we can each
ask ourselves, ―Am I now any
better a disciple of Jesus Christ
and more of a steward of all my
gifts than before the Advent sea-
son started?’ I have been on this
earth for 40+ years. I have had
40+ Advents to draw closer to
God and to work on taking more
seriously my baptismal call.
Some have gone better than oth-
ers, but I would like to think my
spiritual life progressed at least a
small amount during each of
them.
Conversion is a process. Stew-
ardship is about a way of living
and it is about more than simply
being generous when a situation
calls for it. Stewardship and con-
version go hand-in-hand and we
are always moving closer to holi-
ness in Jesus Christ. Living in this
way takes practice and commit-
ment. If this Advent didn’t go as
you had hoped, remember is not
really an end. It is just another
step along your journey.
This Christmas, while you are giv-
ing and receiving gifts and hope-
fully spending time with those
you love, may you take the time
to cherish the true gift that came
to us over 2000 years ago and
continues to call us to this day:
Jesus. Let us be grateful beyond
measure for this gift above all
gifts, let us continue on our jour-
ney, and let our lives give testi-
mony to the one who leads us.

Mass Registration Mass Registration Mass Registration
As more people return to weekend Mass and as the weather gets
colder, it will become more important to sign up, either online or
by calling the rectory by noon on Fridays. Those who come to
Mass without signing up can create a long line behind them as
their name and phone number are written down by the greeter,
causing their fellow parishioners to stand out in the cold, or even
in the rain—and eventually, the snow. And if we begin to reach
our current maximum capacity of 135 at each weekend Mass,
those who have not signed up might be asked to leave, which
would be unfortunate but necessary. You’ll be informed if any of
these requirements change in the future.

The Roman Church has been singing
the "O" Antiphons since at least the

that uses ancient biblical imagery
drawn from the messianic hopes of the
Old Testament to proclaim the coming

well. Their repeated use of the impera-

all for the Divine Messiah.

The angel Gabriel visits Mary to announce the birth of
Jesus.
BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING
This Sunday we read the story of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary about the birth of Jesus. This
story is found only in Luke’s Gospel. On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the liturgy shifts our attention from
John the Baptist to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Both John and Mary serve as important figures for our reflec-
tion during the season of Advent; they both played instrumental roles in preparing the way for Jesus. Last
week we reflected on John the Baptist’s announcement that the Savior was among us, although not yet rec-
ognized. This week we reflect upon Mary’s example of faith and obedience to God, traits which permitted
her to receive the angel’s message that God’s Son would be born as a human person, as one of us.
We are familiar with the story of the Annunciation, and it is fitting that we recall how God announced the
birth of Jesus as we make our final preparations for our celebration of the Incarnation. The angel Gabriel
visited Mary, a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph. Mary greeted the angel’s news with awe and won-
der and asked how it could be possible that she could give birth to a child. In his reply, the angel Gabriel
announced the seemingly impossible reality: the child to be born would be conceived by the power of the
Holy Spirit and would be God’s own Son. The angel reported to Mary another miracle; her relative Elizabeth
was also pregnant despite having been thought to be unable to have a child. Mary’s response to the angel,
which is called her fiat, is an example of complete faith and obedience to God.
The story of the Annunciation calls to our attention God’s wondrous action in human history. God chose a
human person to give birth to his Son so that all humanity would know God’s salvation. Mary, already full of
God’s grace, was able to cooperate in this great plan for our salvation. Thus Jesus was born as one of us,
fully human and also fully divine. This is the mystery we prepare to celebrate at Christmas, the mystery of
the Incarnation. In the model of Mary, we pray that we will be people of faith who recognize God’s saving
plan for us and are able respond with obedience.

Growing with the Gospel
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Naz-
areth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of
David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said,
―Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.‖ But she was greatly troubled at
what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then
the angel said to her, ―Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor
with God. ―Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the
Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom
there will be no end.‖ But Mary said to the angel, ―How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?‖ And the angel said to her in reply,
―The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the
Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a
son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called
barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.‖ Mary said, ―Behold, I am
the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your
word.‖ Then the angel departed from her.
