God with Us – Merry Christmas
I. Thomas Merton (1915-1968), a Cistercian (Trappist) Monk writes: The mystery of Christ already present and working in our midst for our salvation “can only be known by those who enter into it…. - And we all have entered into that mystery at Christmas. - Today we once again experience the wonder of Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds as they contemplate the new born in a manger: Jesus, the Savior. - The power of this child, Son of God and Son of Mary is the Power of Love. It is the power that gives new birth, forgives sin, reconciles enemies and transforms evil into good. It is the Power of God. - We all have shared in that power this Christmas. - That gives reason to the Joy that beams on the faces of young and old, infant and child. - At this joyful time, we are called to contemplate the child Jesus, who gives hope once again to every person on the face of the earth. - May each one of us experience and live in the Hope that Jesus’ birth at Christmas 2019 brings. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
II. On Christmas Day I’ll travel to Ghana to visit once again my family, parents, John & Grace Bentil, a brother and four sisters, among the five siblings, giving me the joy of having twelve nephews and nieces. They “heckle” and surround me a lot when at home, with some calling me “Fr.,” “Uncle Fr.,” “Uncle Kofi” and now my dad always calls me “Fr. Gus” (he ain’t a Wisconsinite) while mom calls me only “Fr.”
III. Highlights of my trip 1. December 28, 2019 - Preside over wedding for my 2nd oldest nephew, Prince Michael (son of sister after me, Martha) at Sacred Heart Church, Kojokrom. - This day also happens to be my father’s 81st birthday (little party for him – “Old John”) 2. January 3, 2020 - My home parish, Sacred Heart, my family, friends and myself will gladly welcome 6 parishioners from our two parishes to Ghana: Mary Uttecht, Pat Kulas, Ron Knitter and Joe Bushman (St. Joseph, Galloway) and Derrick & Tammy Bushman (St. Ladislaus, Bevent). - Purpose: First to witness my anniversary celebration in Ghana. Second to physically see the church built in my hometown, largely by the kindness of some parishioners and families, last two soup suppers from Bevent, last two Good Friday offerings from Galloway, PCCW 2018 Mother’s Day Rose Sales, individual donations and my personal giving.
Fr. Gus’ Corner (corner continued)
- Also opportunity to see my family, my Bishop and Msgr. Francis (Vicar General of my Diocese, who used to be Chancellor of La Crosse Diocese a few years ago and has since returned home). - The Galloway and Bevent group will also enjoy some beach fun and get to see castles along our coasts, where slave trade took place in history. - I also want them to visit the seminary where I was trained for 7 years, St. Peter’s College Seminary. My year mate of 1994, Rev. Dr. Robert Snyper has been the Rector there since 2010.
IV. January 5, 2020 (Epiphany) - My 25th Priestly Anniversary Celebration with my home parish, family and friends at the church, Sacred Heart, Kojokrom.
V. APPRECIATION - Sister Mary Ellen: my sincerest Thank you, for our collaborative ministry and your help in many ways. - Last but not the least, grateful to you for your kindness and well wishes and cards during this Christmas for me and Sister Mary Ellen.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
