Founded in 1970, FMU is named for Revolution-ary War hero Francis Marion. Marion, also nick-named “Swamp Fox”, would use the marsh-like South Carolina terrain to outsmart the British army. FMU enrolls approximately 4,000 students. Though many of the students are from South Carolina, the school also enrolls students from 32 states and 34 foreign countries. Student to faculty ratio is 16 to 1 with an average class size of 20 students and 84% of faculty members hold terminal degrees in their field. FMU prides itself on having a beautiful campus which sits on 300 acres of land. Much of the area is wooded and being preserved as an Arbo-retum for native species.
Six residence halls pro-vide a nice home for FMU underclassmen. The buildings form a courtyard for students to gather and socialize.
Upperclass students have the option of living in the campus apart-ments. The Village Apartments consist of 12 two-story buildings with a kitchen, bathroom and either one or four bedrooms. The Forest Villas are comprised of three three-story buildings. Each apartment has a full kitchen, two bathrooms, and four bedrooms.
