The opposition has alsowelcomed the decision of thecancel lat ion of boardexaminations. Rajasthan BJPpresident Satish Poonia saidthis is an appropriatedecision. Meanwhile, AshokGehlot has also instructedoff ic ia ls to prepare apackage for the kids whohave been orphaned byCovid-19.
Post cyclone Yaas, Bihar begins crop lossassessment, including for sugarcane

Officials of the agriculturedepartment said that maizeand moong crops weredamaged extensively in thecyclonic rains. 'However,vegetables, part icularlythose growing on vines,suffered a major blow due toprolonged accumulation ofwater in the fields,' said anofficer.
'The department hasasked al l the distr ictmagistrates (DMs) to submitthe details of crop damagesin two specified formats. Theblock development officerswill do the groundwork andthe district agriculture officerwill forward the same to theDMs for verification. TheDM's view is must as thecompensation would bedoled out from the disastermanagement department,'said another officer, addingthat the entire exercise isexpected to be completed bythe end of June. 'Jharkhand likely to holdPanchayat polls in Nov-Dec'
Ranchi, The three-tierpanchayat polls in Jharkhandcan be held in November orDecember this year, dependingon Covid-19 situation in thestate, said rural developmentminister Alamgir Alam onWednesday. Panchayat polls inthe state were due inDecember last year. In Januarythis year, the governmentgranted a six-month extensionto the current panchayatbodies in the wake of delay inconducting the polls. Theextension expires on July 31.'We could not conductpanchayat polls last year dueto Covid-19 pandemic. Wethought that the elections willbe conducted during theextension period. But, thesecond wave of Covid-19
ruined that possibility too. Itis not possible to conduct thepolls by July 31,' said Alam.Besides, the Panchayati RajAct doesn't mention a secondextension, putting officials ina fix.
Therefore, the stategovernment has decided toseek the Centre's opinion overfurther extension, officials saidon Wednesday. The ruraldevelopment minister alsocalled a meeting onWednesday to explorealternatives so that panchayatworks do not get affectedafter the extension expires.Alam said they wereconsidering two options- togive further extension topanchayat bodies or put themunder administrative control.

Bengalure, The Karnataka Association Of Resident Doctors onWednesday wrote a letter to chief minister B S Yediyurappa,demanding protection of health care workers in the state, daysafter a doctor was brutally assaulted over the death of a six-year-old boy during treatment. Four people were arrested in connectionwith the assault on Monday. The doctor is undergoing treatment ata hospital and is out of danger, police said.
