William Radcliffe Studio ChallengeThe William Radcliffe Studio Challenge honors KAC Founder, William Radcliffe’s dedication to inspire others to think outside of their comfort zone and pursue creative experiences. All submissions were reviewed and five artists are recognized as finalists for the $1,000 Studio Challenge Award. KAC was honored to have Deborah Paine, Curator & Collections Manager at Office of Arts & Culture, as this year’s Studio Challenge juror. The winner will be announced during the Live Auction.

It is with pleasure and thanks to Kirkland Art Center for inviting me to jury the 2017 Studio Challenge. To choose only five finalists from the array of 48 fine artworks became an exercise of constraint. I appreciated the wide range of disciplines and the mastery of materials. This is often what I look for when choosing artwork that “speaks” to me. The difficulty in viewing artwork from my computer is the inability to really see how the materials are used. This can be a frustration but also levels the playing field. My experience has led me to trust my eye and enjoy not only color, composition, and light but the expression of ideas and intent that is conveyed.

Auction Rules1. BID NUMBER & TABLE NUMBERYou will receive a bid number and table number when you register, and a bid card will be placed at your table. Use your bid number to bid in the silent and live auctions. A live bid accepted by the Auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. The top bid of the silent auction is also a legal contract for purchase. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject a minimal bid over a prior bid.

2. EXPRESS PAYExpress Pay is available at registration. We

accept Visa and MasterCard.

3. PAYMENTPayment in full is mandatory the night of the Auction. Only one bid number is accepted per auction item. Multiple purchasers of an item must be responsible for reimbursing the bidder. Checks are to be made to Kirkland Arts Center.

4. TAX-DEDUCTIBILITYKirkland Arts Center is a 501(c)3 organization. Your payments are tax-deductible as a charitable contribution only to extent of the law. Check with your tax advisor for eligibility.

Thanks to the generosity of over 15 local bakeries, we’ve lined up a tempting assortment of desserts to satisfy every kind of sweet tooth. At each table, you will find a Dessert Dash bidding card where each guest may write in their bidder number and contribution to the donation pool. Your table’s collective donation is competing for first choice of the dessert lineup. Our auctioneer, David Silverman, will invite a representative from each table in order of contribution size, so give big and pick your “runner” wisely!

Marge Levy has been an educator, artist, and clay-maker for many years. After teaching as a professor of ceramics and fine arts for 22 years, Levy moved to Seattle in 1991 to serve as Executive Director of Pilchuck Glass School. Jensen has been a working artist for over 30 years and has participated in many exhibitions, including at the SAM Gallery and Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. His current series focuses on boats as a symbol of a voyage. The boat is a personal image to Jensen recalling his childhood spent around boatbuilding, his Scandinavian heritage, and his own journey of recovery from extreme grief and loss.

Peterson created this painting after viewing the eclipse from Orcas Island. She wanted to capture how huge that moment was, the brilliance of the sun, the moment the moon started to travel across that fiery ball. She wanted to have the viewer experience that amazing moment in time using scale and bold, primary colors. “This is what I am always telling my students at KAC, work bold, make a statement, take a risk.” She has done exactly that with this painting of the Eclipse. Thea Peterson has been teaching at Kirkland Arts Center for the last 5 years. Her work can be seen at Ryan James Fine Arts Gallery.

Skibska’s work sits at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, three-dimensional line drawing, and even storytelling. She uses a powerful acetylene torch to melt and stretch glass rods, creating slender and transparent threads, that are then joined to create perfectly balanced sculptures. This technique is known as the Anna Skibska Technique. Skibska’s work has been internationally shown and recognized with numerous group and solo exhibitions. In this work, she has partnered with Gregg Atkinson and Mike Sintzel of Zuli Lighting, enhancing her luminous sculptures to new narrative experiences.

Using experimental mark-making and strategic placement of color, Beer is able to achieve a special kind of abstraction and rich array of textures. Together, her paintings offer symbols describing the journey of conversation. In A Bird Story, Beer reflects on the lessons to be gleaned from the gentle essence of little birds. Birds also remind her of a dear friend and the beautiful distinct song of their friendship. Beer’s work has been exhibited in various venues and she teaches acrylic painting at KAC.

A longtime member of the KAC ceramics community, Barbee passed away in spring 2017. A prolific and accomplished ceramicist, Chris generously dedicated his beautiful creations to the benefit of KAC.

We are honored to share two of his elegant aluminum foil saggar pots in memory of this great artist, friend, mentor, and supporter.

Birds, flowers, and animals all speak to Dickter of our shared experiences: of connection and isolation, love and loss, permanence and impermanence. This work combines 2D and 3D materials: paint and ceramic on a painter panel. This dance between dualities is part of the tension explored in Dickter’s work. Dickter has exhibited nationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including KAC earlier this year.

Calkins’ work draws from history and familiarity, a sense of time and place, from important people in his life and a deep appreciation of nature. Using a wide array of materials including found objects, encaustics, fabric, metal, and paint, stories that are largely obscure to the observer become emotionally accessible through symbols which trigger emotional responses.
