*Call to Worship
One: People of God, who do you come to worship?
All: We come to worship the one true God.
One: How will you worship?
All: Not with words alone, but by living lives of justice and love.
One: Come, you who belong to God. Come, you who are foolish in the eyes of the world.
All: Come and abide in God’s tent and in God’s heart, now and forever. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Matthew 5:1-12 (NRSV)
5 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples
came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for
they will receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 “Blessed are
the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are
persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you
when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my
account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they
persecuted the prophets who were before you.
One: This is the Word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God.

*Offering Prayer (unison)
O God, You bless us in so many areas of our lives — in places we often fail to recognize as
blessing. Help us have eyes to see and hearts to understand the depth of Your love and
blessing. Today, we give out of that blessedness, dedicating ourselves to lives of justice and
love, giving all that we are and all that we have to bring about your beloved community, here
and now. Amen.
Sent Forth to Do the Work of God’s Kingdom
*Challenge Hymn Let There Be Peace On Earth UMH 431
*Benediction
One: Those who live lives pleasing to God shall not be moved. Go now to embrace the
kingdom values — values of love, justice, and truth. Go now with God’s blessing, to live those
values through the power of our challenging, faithful, loving, empowering God.
All: Amen.
