57TH ANNUAL CONVENTION & EXPOSITION
F U L LY V I R T U A L
Dear LeadingAge Florida members,
Thank you for joining us for our virtual 57th Annual Convention & Exposition! As it has for our members, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us to rethink and reimagine ways to serve you during these extraordinary times. Our first-ever virtual convention represents just such a reimagining.
Over the course of three days, we’ll bring you an internationally known and best-selling keynote speaker, more than 60 continuing education sessions, opportunities to meet with more than 70 exhibitors, daily networking sessions, meditation and other relaxation breaks, our very popular roundtable sessions, and even our Fun Night event – all delivered directly to you.
If you aren’t able to join us for any of these events during our Convention, I hope you’ll take advantage of our on-demand options. All sessions will be available on-demand for three weeks after the close of the Convention, providing even greater, extended opportunities for you to learn the latest from the most innovative minds in senior living.
This year especially, we are excited to honor the people and communities who have gone above and beyond to collaborate, to innovate, to provide leadership, and to ensure the safety and health of your residents throughout the pandemic. You won’t want to miss our LeadingAge Florida awards, which recognize truly the best of the best in Florida senior living. We’ll tell their inspiring stories during our general sessions each day.
Finally, I’d like to thank the LeadingAge Florida team for their work in transforming our signature event into an opportunity to come together, to learn together, and to share together, regardless of the circumstances. I’m confident you will find it to be a richly valuable – if highly unique – Convention experience. Thank you for making the journey with us!

problems before they happen.
Dan Heath, Innovative Business Thought Leader and New York Times Best-Selling Author, will be the keynote speaker at our virtual Convention and Exposition.
So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, and doctors treat patients with chronic diseases, and call-center reps address customer complaints. But crime and chronic disease and customer complaints are preventable! So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention?
During his presentation, Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen, Dan will draw on insights from hundreds of interviews with unconventional problem solvers and deliver practical solutions for preventing problems rather than simply reacting to them.

The continued inappropriate use of antibiotics increases the likelihood of a pandemic will occur in our lifetime and by the year 2050, 10 million people a year will die from multidrug resistant organisms.

Leaders often spend a good deal of their time “putting out fires” by reacting to resident, employee or operational challenges. Unfortunately, many times the resolutions to challenges are short-lived due to the absence of three things: 1) A long-term vision, which prevents leaders from anticipating the ripple effects of their decisions and solutions; 2) Effective systems & processes, which causes inconsistencies in operations that result in resident and employee dissatisfaction; 3) Effective problem solving- processes, which occurwhen quick solutions are implemented in order to treat the symptoms of the problems, not the root causes.
In this session, leaders will learn how to maintain a long-term vision, the importance of having effective systems & processes and the process for collaboratively uncovering the root causes of their challenges and engaging in a problem-solving process with employees, residents, and/or family members that result lasting solutions.
Leaders will also learn how to become more innovative by shifting from a reactionary to an anticipatory leadership style. They will learn about the causes and consequences of the 2 main obstacles to innovation, overconfidence and complacency, and how to overcome them in order to meet the changing needs & expectations of residents and employees.

Social isolation and loneliness affect over half of seniors living in care. Typically, the same 30% of residents come to programs and the other 70% refuse invitations no matter what is on the calendar.
Many residents have trouble making meaningful connections with their peers without support. Programs offered provide enjoyment for some, but social isolation persists, and lack of resident input perpetuates the stereotype of residents as passive recipients of care. Residents continue to report lack of meaning, limited opportunities for contribution and frustration with paternalistic communication with staff. Social isolation negatively impacts mental health, health behaviors, physical health, falls and mortality—accelerating a residents’ need for assistance.
Residents themselves, however, represent an untapped resource to address these issues. Peer support and peer mentoring offers a model that gives residents the capacity to develop a positive culture of helping others. This approach is innovative as it has the potential to reduce rates of social isolation among residents being supported
and among residents doing the supporting. In addition, these outcomes are associated with reduced healthcare costs due to a decreased risk of falls, dementia, staff burden and burnout.
Imagine a home where residents join with volunteers and staff and learn how to build emotional connections with their fellow residents.
This session will present an evidence-based innovative peer support and mentoring program that has demonstrated a 60% increase in engagement of socially isolated residents as well as significant reductions in loneliness and depression.
Coming Together to Solve Social Isolation
Learning Objectives:
• Describe recent research surrounding social isolation and loneliness and how typical programs based onentertainment and distraction are largely ineffective in addressing social isolation.
• Evaluate a model that brings together residents, volunteers and staff to build a culture of peer support andmentoring and have experienced a team peer mentoring session in action. Participants will have engaged in adiscussion and evaluated the capacity of this structure to reducing the rates of social isolation, loneliness anddepression in senior living.
• Describe the cost savings associated with the research outcomes of this model and describe how this modelimpacts the bottom line for a senior living operator.

Because of this reality, leaders often are frustrated and perplexed in dealing with those who are reluctant and resistant in adopting a shared vision. In this session, leaders will learn specific techniques and practices to help the most reluctant members of an organization embrace the right work.
Participants will examine the deep underpinnings of resistance to change and will acquire an understanding of how to adapt a leadership message to those who are reluctant to do what should be done. Staffing pressures can have effects on all aspects of the organization including patient care, sustainability, and also hinders growth. In order to overcome employment obstacles, organizations have to reanalyze the way they are approaching the hiring process. This session will create a framework in which organizations can not only identify and keep talented employees, but utilize the best recruitment practices to ensure the right candidate walks through the door.
Organizations must understand the work starts as soon as a job is posted. The experience a candidate has during the recruitment process shapes how they view the organization. Knowing what to avoid and how to effectively sell your organization to potential hires is vital to capturing their attention.
This session will break down three key components of hiring; integrity, initiative, and intelligence, as well as the three components of retention, aspiration, achievement, and autonomy. It will also address employee engagement, which is vital in employee retention. Some studies
estimate employee turnover in the senior living sector range from 45 percent to 66 percent, with others placing that range even higher. Based on the current climate, it is important to understand the best methods in which organizations can not only recruit, but also retain good employees. Organizations have to learn to be competitive with marketing and selling employment opportunities to potential talent.
Utilizing case studies, and industry experience, this session will leave attendees with the insight to better create an environment in which employee engagement and satisfaction are priority.

Change for any organization is not only inevitable, but essential. In our field, new services, programs, technology, personnel, capital improvements and even comprehensive rebrands ensure communities meet the changing expectations of residents and stay an ever-so-important step ahead of competition.
According to the 2018 LeadingAge Ziegler 200, nearly 72% of LZ 200 industry organizations reported intentions to expand or reposition in 2018/2019. That signals a significant potential for change, and this doesn’t even include the myriad of other proactive and reactive opportunities waiting on your community’s doorstep. Unfortunately, this necessity to evolve directly opposes the fact that most of us are creatures of habit and change can be highly uncomfortable.
So how do you balance these two opposing forces - the need to change versus our resistance to it? One important way is communication. Timely, transparent, thoughtful communication.

Hospitals and health systems across the U.S. face a new kind of shortage among the nursing workforce; an experience shortage. The workforce is becoming increasingly novice as experienced nurses retire. At the same time, the care complexity is rising and shows no signs of abating. These two countervailing forces create a gap between the experience of the workforce and the complexity of care provided.

Safe and effective geriatric medication management involves much more than simply administering “what the doctor ordered”. Drugs used to treat both chronic and acute conditions in the elderly provide powerful benefits but also carry significant risk. Assisted living providers have an obligation to partner with the resident, their surrogate decision makers, the prescriber, and pharmacy staff to identify and minimize those risks.
This presentation, through the use of case studies and group discussion, will examine classes of drugs that are considered high risk when administered to the elderly. Emphasis will be placed on drug classes undergoing current scrutiny such as antibiotics, psychotropic, and opioids. Lastly, a resident-centered approach to managing such drugs will be discussed.

Research on the negative health impact of loneliness will be discussed plus the importance of encouraging feelings of purpose, belonging, and personal identity.
