History
Establishment of Muslim League
SourceA: Twentieth century was marked by a political awakening of the Muslims to the real
or perceived idea that the British policies in the subcontinent were hostile
towards their interests. Therefore, even those supporters of Aligarh who had
been preaching their coreligionists to keep aloof from politics, now turned to
advise the students of Aligarh College (in March 1903) to participate in politics.
This change took place because of a host of issues such as the attack on Urdu
(1900), the partition of Bengal (1905) and the Hindu reaction to that, the victory
of the pro-Hindu Labor Party in the U.K., an end of Curzon era and start of Minto’s
era.
Q- Write four reasons because of which the Muslims started taking part
in the Indian politics. [5]
British Divide And Rule Policy
Source B:The Indian rebellion of 1857 inspired a series of divisive political
ideologies which till date remain ingrained in our minds. The fact that
Muslims and Hindus united to fight against the British in 1857 ignited a
fear amongst the colonial rulers. This unity would be the end of their rule,
and they knew it. It was also the beginning of the ‘Divide and Rule’ policy
in India, a horrific yet successful strategy that lasted from 1857 till the
partition and independence of India and Pakistan in 1947.
From reorganizing the army to include only those who did not rebel in the
revolt of 1857 to creating separate electorates for Muslims and Hindus, the
British left no page unturned to divide and rule. There were Muslim
electorates for them to choose Muslim leaders from and similar
electorates for Hindus. They attempted to partition Bengal on the basis of
religious grounds even though India had never had boundaries based on
religions. A united India was a ghost fleeting through history and it ceased
to appear with the partition of 1947.
Use the Source B to attempt following questions:
1. What ignited fear among the colonial rulers in 1857? [4]
2. State any three examples with description, in which British
implemented the divide and rule policy. [6]
