General Education Attainment (Assessment) Summary
University of West Georgia
August 2013
General Education Outcomes and Student Attainment
The University of West Georgia identifies college-level general education outcomes in four areas required of all
undergraduate students seeking a baccalaureate degree. These areas are identifies as A-E. Courses in area F (a
sixth area of the core) are unique to each major and are included in UWG’s assessment of academic programs
noted in response to 3.3.1.1.
General Education (core curriculum) learning outcomes are identified in the Undergraduate Catalog and shown in
Table 1 below. The University assesses the extent to which students have attained these outcomes by employing
course-level assessments. Table 2 includes a summary of these course-embedded assessments and the locations
form which the data were collected. UWG offers the core on its main campus in Carrollton, and selectively at its
Newnan Instructional site and Online. All delivery locations and mediums are included in the assessment
summary. Following Table 2, a sample of learning outcome student attainment (assessment) reports are
included. This sample includes all areas of the core and all locations and delivery mediums.

Comments on Improvements The Department of Art will work with faculty teaching Art 2000 to better evaluate pedagogy and assessment methods for the course.
Impact of Improvement (if applicable)
The Art 2000 rubric proved very valuable and helped structure grading between various instructors and course sections--it was especially helpful tool to give
adjunct instructors from the department of art. The Department of Art will continue to work with all faculty teaching ART 2000 to discuss ways to improve the course(s) and some minor changes will be discussed for the fall 2013 semester.

Comments on Improvements Instructions and minimum standards for speeches will be more clearly presented to students. Because some students lost points for not having an audience, the requirements regarding an audience will be reassessed. The instructor will ensure that all such standards are explicitly detailed in instructions to students.
Impact of Improvement (if applicable)
The instructor resigned before the online course could be assessed again, and no one else has taught the course online. For Fall 2012, she changed the syllabus and instructions for speeches to clarify requirements. She also implemented new requirements regarding the need for an audience. It is my understanding that the changes improved student performance.

Comments on Improvements Most students who attempted the informative presentation did very well, better than they did on other assignments. Two students, however, did not submit any work for this and subsequent assignments. Because XIDS 1004 is a 4-hour course, I expected more work from students than for a 3-hour course. Though I attempted to make that clear at the outset, some students seemed surprised at my expectations. I will more strongly emphasize the workload in the future.

Furthermore, I plan to increase training on the use of software.

Dr. Amy Cuomo and Dr. Pauline Gagnon spent a year working on the book and it was used by a majority of the faculty in this for fall 2012. Reponses from faculty and students were extremely positive. Dr. Cuomo and Dr. Gagnon are beginning work on the second edition--slated to be available Fall, 2014. Title of this new text is Theater Arts: An Interdisciplinary Approach-ISBN 978-1-4652-0747-0

The faculty members are re-evaluating the instrument. The instructor in the course will work this semester to clarify the material for students in class. In addition, the faculty are evaluating methods for better motivating students to complete the required work in the course.
Impact of Improvement (if applicable)
Members of the Survey Assessment Committee met in the fall of 2011 to discuss the results. The faculty agreed to add an additional set of questions on another source to the assessment instrument. Faculty discussed means, such as quizzes, of motivating and focusing students' attention on the material to be tested on the assessment instrument. The instructor worked the next semester to focus students' attention on the material to be assessed.

Comments on Improvements To be fair, the average score for this class was not significantly lower in the post-test than other sections of this course. However, there was much less improvement in this course. It is believed that this is because it is a large online section with little opportunity for meaningful interaction between faculty and student. Thus, we are offering smaller sections of these courses OR utilizing assistants to facilitate discussion and offer a greater volume and more in-depth feedback to students.

Comments on Improvements This is the second year that we have assessed HIS 2111. After last year's numbers, we decided to incorporate the primary source material more into class lectures in an effort to enhance our students' analytical skills before giving the assessment quiz. This improved numbers somewhat, but like last year, we note that students continue to grasp the basics of each narrative that they read. Yet, analysis of the overall themes and meanings behind those readings prove to be a bit more difficult despite the instructors? attempt at discussing the readings before the quizzes take place. At this time there is no plan to re-evaluate the instruments used for assessment, but the instructors are continuing to discuss and evaluate ways to better improve the students? analytical skills.
