NEXT ISSUE JULY 2013
Dear Colleagues,
The recent proliferation of organizations participating in standards-setting and policy-making for the massage and bodywork profession is hard for us all to keep up with. Regardless of whether or not we need them all, these organizations are ruling your life- and you don’t get to vote. However, you can write letters and emails about upcoming decisions that are going to affect you and your practice. Many decisions about continuing education are slated to be made by the policy-makers and ruling bodies in the next year or so, so visit some websites and express yourself- it’s important!
Here’s a short summary of who’s who in the therapeutic massage and bodywork organization world:
We have State Licensure Boards, whose mission is to protect the public. We have the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), whose members are the state boards that choose to join; the FSMTB’s mission is to support massage licensing boards.
We have therapist professional organizations, such as the AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) and ABMP (Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals), whose mission is to serve member therapists and promote the profession to the public. We have credentialing organizations such as the National Certifi cation Board for Massage Therapy & Bodywork (NCBTMB) - their goal is to advance the standards of the profession, which they do through offering advanced certifi cation in massage therapy and bodywork, and approving teachers who provide continuing education for massage therapists and bodyworkers.
Support for massage schools and massage school teachers is provided by the AMTA Council of Schools, ABMP, NCBTMB, and the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education (AFMTE).
I will post issues and links on the PERG facebook page to make it easier for you to stay current with proposals affecting you. Like the page in order to be notifi ed of new issues posted. I feel this is very important, and a critical time for us all to be aware and to participate. Thank you for paying attention!
Sincerely,
Nancy Toner Weinberger, Publisher
