EGEBIRGSJAGER SPECIAL RULES
Pack MulesA Gerbirgsdivision had specific requirements for logistical supply and transportation. Trucks were part of the Valley echelon (Talstaffel) and a Pack Mule train formed the Mountain echelon (Bergstaffel). Mountain troops were issued with light guns that could be broken into smaller loads and carried on pack horses or mules to move on the narrow mountain trails and terrain they are trained to fight on.
MountaineersGebirgsjäger are trained to fight over the high mountains of Europe. They are equipped to scale any slope or rocky mountain pass.
Gun teams carried by Pack Mule teams are Mountaineers, see page 61 of the rulebook. Pack Mule teams are Transport teams. Pack Mule teams carry Gun teams as Passengers and the Gun team is removed from the table while it is carried by the Pack Mule team.
Gebirgsjäger Infantry teams and Man-packed Gun teams are all Mountaineers.
GRENADIER SPECIAL RULES
WAFFEN-SS SPECIAL RULES
WaldjägerWhen SS-Division ‘Nord’ was converted into a Gebirgsdivision their experience fighting alongside the Finns in the frozen north had already shaped their training. With high mountains few and far between in Finland they con-centrated on improving their mobility through the forests and snow of northern Finland. Experience and training soon made them almost as adept at Wald, or forest, fighting as the native Finns.
Waldjäger Infantry and Man-packed Gun teams may move At the Double through Woods, Snow and Deep snow (see page 30 of the rulebook).
A Gebirgsjägerkompanie and a Gebirspionierkompanie use all the German special rules on pages 241 to 245 of the rulebook. In addition, they use the Mountaineers and Pack Mule special rules below.
A Grenadierkompanie, a Pionierkompanie, and a Beutepanzerkompanie use all the German special rules on pages 241 to 245 of the rulebook. In addition, they use the Pack Mule special rules above.
SS-Gebirgsgrenadierkompanie, SS-Gebirgspionierkompanie, SS-Schützenkompanie, SS-Aufklärungsschwadron, and SS-Skijägerkompanie use all the German special rules on pages 241 to 245 of the rulebook, as well as the Pack Mule special rules above. In addition, some platoons use the Waldjäger special rule below as indicated under the platoon.

The German Heer has only a short history of fielding mountain troops. The first units were raised in 1915 from Bavarian and Württemburg veterans. However, the greater German Reich inherited a long and proud tradition of mountain warfare from the Austrian army after the two nations became one in 1938.
Finland was originally home to three Gebirgsdivisionen
(Mountain Divisions); 3. Gebirgsdivision, 6. Gebirgsdivision and 7. Gebirgsdivision. However with the failure of the attack on Murmansk and the expansion of 6. SS-Gebirgsdivision ‘Nord’, the bulk of 3. Gebirgsdivision was withdrawn from Finland for other duties, leaving behind Gebirgsjäger Regiment 139 as an independent unit.
Just like other units in Finland, the already lightly armed Gebirgsjäger are armed with old equipment, such as the MG34 and the PaK36 anti-tank gun. Despite this, they fight with courage and skill against their foe.

gebirgsjäger Platoon
The Gebirgsjäger (mountain hunter) is an elite light infantry -man trained in mountain warfare. Due to the terrain they fight in they can’t always rely on the support of heavy weapons and panzers, so they have become effective assault infantry. They are proud of their traditions and have a very high esprit de corps and maintain good morale even when fighting away from their beloved mountains. The individual
Gebirgsjäger is a fit strong man due to their excellent training and the requirement to carry much of their equipment with them when campaigning in mountainous terrain.
The teams of a Gebirgsjägerkompanie HQ are Mountaineers.

The Gebirgsjäger in Finland are universally equipped with the older MG34. Despite it’s age, the MG34 is a reliable and deadly weapon, especially in the expert hands of the Gebirgsjäger.
The Gebirgsjäger use the lightweight GW34 Mortar to provide instant fire support for their advancing infantry. They allow the Gebirgsjäger to pummel concentrations of infantry, provide a smoke screen or pin down defending troops.

The Gebirgjäger in Finland had a range of anti-tank weaponry, from 2.8cm sPzB 41 to 7.5cm guns. The former Austrian regiments also made use of ex-Austrian 4.7cm PaK Bohler guns (same as the Italian 47/32). All these guns had something in common, they were light and could be trans-ported on a pack mule.

The German grenadiers provide a steady infantry base for the German army. They might not have the most glamourous role, but they provide and maintain a solid front line. In the rough terrain of Lapland, tanks struggle to operate making the Grenadiers even more vital, often leading attacks and counter- attacks, as well as supporting the Gebirgsjager divisions. This makes the troops of 163. ID and 169. ID, as well as Grenadier Regiments 193 and 388 very valuable.
As Lapland was seen as a backwater and got a lower priority for new equipment, the Grenadiers used the older MG34
to provide machine-gun support to the battalion. Other non-standard equipment used included 5cm leGW 36 mortars and submachine-guns such as the MP 28 and Finnish Suomi 31.

The bulk of the tanks in Panzerabteilung 211 were Hotchkiss H38 (Panzer 38-H 735(f )) tanks with the long gun. The were also a substantial number of SOMUA S35 (Panzer 35-S 739(f )), which due to their larger size, were used as command tanks. Designed for the start of the war they are now obsolete in the face of more modern armour like the T-34. Despite this they were the only substantial armoured unit deployed in Finland in 1944, due to the poor terrain for tank use. They are still useful against infantry and some of the Finnish armour such as the T-26.
Despite Panzerabteilung 211 having seen limited fighting in 1941, the lack of action in Lapland has seen them lose their best personnel for less experienced officers and other ranks from other units. As such, their troops are rated Confident Trained.

Artillery was not in short supply in Finland. In addition to the integral artillery support of the divisions, several inde-pendent artillery units were also based there.
Providing artillery support in Kampfgruppe Tornio, was Artillerie-Abteilung 520 with 10.5cm and 15cm field guns. Artillery-Abteilung 477 also provided artillery support in Finland and used 12cm captured guns from Norway, both the 12cm felthaubits/M32 and the Rheinmetal 12cm leFH08.

10.5cm NbW35 mortar support was provided to 19. Gebirgskorps by the 2nd and 3rd batteries of Gebirgs-werfer-Abteilung 10. Each battery had access to captured Soviet machine guns for direct fire support.
In addition to Nebelwerfer and Panzerwerfer rocket launch-ers, Werfer-Abteilung 11 also had 10.5cm mortars in Werfer-batterie 224. These had previously been 8. Batterie, Artillerie Regiment 222, and had been attached when the regiment left Finland.
The battery used the larger NbW40 which had a much longer range than the NbW35 used by other units. Unfortunately it weighed 8 times as much as the older model! They were rapidly replaced in production by the 15cm NbW 41 Rocket Launcher, but those produced saw combat as artillery in sec-ondary roles.

They arrived in 1943, and once arrived in Kairala, gave a demonstration of their firepower to over 100 officers. In 1944 they fought the Soviets at Kiestinki, as well as fighting the Finns at Kemi, Tornio, and Salla as part of Kampfgruppen Korja, Tornio and

Heavy anti-aircraft gun Platoon
The German troops in Finland used the world famous 88, the 8.8cm FlaK36 anti-aircraft gun. In addition to these they were also equipped with captured Soviet 85mm obr 1939 heavy anti-aircraft guns that had been bored out to fire standard 8.8cm German ammunition. These 8.5cm Flak39(r) gun suffered issues with rate of fire however, due to the barrels overheating.
The 20th Mountain Army received Nebelwerfer rocket support from Gebirgs-Werfer-Abteilung 10 (motorised) and Werfer-Abteilung 11. Both had access to captured equipment, Werfer-Abteilung 11 managed to obtained Soviet 4.5cm anti-tank guns for direct fire support, while Gebirgs-Werfer-Abteilung 10 had access to captured Soviet machine-guns for direct fire support.

Luftwaffen-Feld-Regiment 503 (Air Force Field Regiment 503) under Generalmajor van der Hoop supported the German troops in Lapland, mostly by manning coastal defences, and protecting airfields. It’s main role was to secure airfields for shipping strikes, although they got caught up in the retreat from Finland just like everyone else.
Some units had a PaK36 anti-tank gun attached for patrolling, in case they ran into light Soviet vehicles.
The Luftwaffe in north Lapland had a platoon of captured tankettes which was normally used to escort transports, it escorted the retreating Germans as well. They generally worked with a Feld platoon, with the men riding as tank riders. The tankettes would also tow the 3.7cm PaK36 anti-tank gun, if the platoon had one. The platoon consisted of two captured TKS Tankettes and two Bren Gun Carriers.
A Tank team from a Luftwaffe Escort Patrol may tow a 3.7cm PaK36 gun from a Luftwaffe Feld Platoon.

STRONGPOINTS
In the stalemate of the fighting in Finland over the past two years, both sides have built extensive fortifications. These can range from an observation post or machine gun position, to a well fortified strongpoint with emplaced anti-tank guns, AA guns and other fortifications.
In and around the vital nickel mines at Petsamo, several old non-functional Panzer I tanks were issued to entrench as bunkers to enhance the defences there.
The coastal fortifications on the Finnish and Norwegian coastline included a variety of captured anti-tank guns and turrets from Hotchkiss and Somua tanks.
A Field Strongpoint must be attached to a Platoon entirely made up of Infantry teams and/or Man-packed Gun teams in a company with Field Fortifications.

Each 28cm sWG41 rocket launcher fires as a separate artil-lery battery using the Stuka zu Fuss special rule (page 245 of the rulebook), but only has four rockets instead of six. As a result, it only has four attempts to range in. Once fired, the 28cm sWG41 rocket launcher is removed from the game.
A 28cm sWG41 Nest may use any Command team in the Trench Lines of a Wiederstandnest as a Spotter as if they were the Command team of the rocket launcher.
The 28cm sWG42 Nests of a Static Rocket Launcher Battery are placed as a Fortified Platoon before deployment (see page 262 of the rulebook). As the entire battery is made up of Bunkers, it is not a platoon for any other purpose.
Units near the coast were lucky and could request additional artillery support from the coastal batteries. These where equipped with a range of captured artillery, from Belgian 7.5cm guns through to heavy guns such as French or Polish 15.5cm guns or German 15cm Guns.
