takE thE puBlic trail…Alongside our changing programme of exhibitions and touch screens throughout the building displaying different content and work, The Public has a number of permanent pieces of art. Why not look out for them on your next visit and take The Public trail to discover some fantastic works?
Designed by renowned architect Will Alsop and Julian Flannery, a unique and inspirational creation; the building is our first work of art. Stand in the lobby on the ground floor and look up – this will give you a great chance to see that there are no vertical walls from floor to ceiling and that the inter-connecting floors and levels in this multi-coloured structure hang off a series of columns. Very much a part of
the landscape, its black and pink exterior is an iconic feature of West Bromwich with its boldly-shaped windows providing a picturesque panoramic view of the Black Country and beyond.
Bringing the “outside in” was an original concept of The Public with the visitor exploring a “walk in the park” feel – the wooden walkways of the ramp weaving its way from the gallery to the ground floor has park railings and benches throughout. Metal trees designed by Ben Kelly feature along the walk with multi-coloured and reflective branches, leaves of various materials and screens showing art made by local children during our workshops. As they walk down the ramp, the visitor encounters Animo by Utani – developed with learners from the Lyng Church Project and Sandwell Council’s Adult and Community
Services. Interactive story-telling has never been so much fun as the visitor creates and features in their very own life-size animation. Datafall and Content Pools by Lia and Miguel Carvalhais continues the indoor theme by introducing interactive elements where the visitor has the ability to influence the shapes, colours and sounds of this inside world.
Take a seat, relax and surprise your friends with the amazing Telepresent by Paul Sermon.
Finally, fly around this outside/inside world with Flypad by Blast Theory. Create and watch your avatar character on the big screen – stay in the air as long as possible by catching other players before landing gently on the ground floor.
