PASTOR’S MESSAGE….
REV. DEMETRIOS N. CALOGREDES
Presvytera Hresanthe (Terry) Calogredes
June 8th 1951 – March 1st 2017
Our beloved Presvytera Terry Calogredes was born in Trenton, New
Jersey on June 8, 1951 to Steve Litsas and Martha (Bogiatzis) Litsas.
She grew up in Wrightstown, New Jersey where she attended her elementary school. She graduated from
Saint Mary’s Hall, Burlington, New Jersey. Afterwards she attended Katherine Gibs Secretarial School. In
1970, the family went to Greece where she attended and graduated from Pierce College in Athens. In 1973,
the family returned to the United States and Presvytera attended Hunter College where she received her
degree in Early Childhood Education. While attending Hunter, she also worked at the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese in Manhattan as secretary in the department of Laity. It was there that she met the love of her
life, Jim Calogredes who was at the Archdiocese on a seminar. They were married on June 29, 1975 at Holy
Trinity Cathedral in New York City.
On November 23, 1975, Jim was Ordained to the Holy Priesthood and Terry became a Presvytera
wife of the Priest. On October 18, 1976 their first born child Kathryn was born while they were at the
Transfiguration Church in Corona. On September 15, 1981, they were blessed with 2 boys – Nicholas and
Steven, when they were serving the St. John the Divine Church in Wheeling, West Virginia.
A Dynamic, Loving, and Dedicated woman, Presvytera Terry organized and ran the Sunday Catechism
School program, organized the breakfast with Santa, puppet shows in Wheeling. From 1985 – 1996, Father
Jim and Presvytera were in St. George Trenton, New Jersey. Again she ran the Sunday Catechism School
and Chaired the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. In 1996, they came to St. Nicholas Shrine in
West Babylon, New York. At St. Nicholas she taught Catechism Classes, Chaired the oratorical Festival,
and organized the Greek Bakaliko stand at the Greek Festival.
From 2004 – 2008 Presvytera was President of the DAD Presvyteres Sisterhood. Always energetic and
filled with great ideas, she organized Christmas and New Year Dinners for the Priests and Presvyteres,
Picnics at Long Island Parks, and Barbeques. She was a mentor to the Presvyteres, especially the younger
ones, counseling them with their marital problems, consoling them in their medical situations, and advis
ing in their children’s concerns. Creating bonds of Love, Compassion, and Good Fellowship among the
Presvyteres was very important to her.
The year 2008 arrived and they found themselves at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Pictur-
esque Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York. There she helped resurrect the old Educational & Cultural
Committee with religious and medical lectures, Dickens Festival, Bakalika Booths at the Greek Festival, Pot
Luck Dinners, and the unforgettable Apokreatiko Glendi!
