SPOT
LIGHT
Diana GabaldonDiana Gabaldon has spent two decades and
about 3 million words describing time-traveling
20th century English nurse Claire and her 18th
century Scottish husband Jamie. Now, Gabaldon’s
characters come alive in The Exile: An Outlander
Graphic Novel (Del Rey, September).
GN: Do Claire and Jamie Fraser look just like you
imagined?
Diana Gabaldon: Well, no. That’s more or less
impossible. The artist did a wonderful job, but he
can’t see inside my head.
GN: Did the artist interview you?
DG: To start, they sent me samples from about 10
artists. I was struck by Hoang Nguyen’s sense of
color and composition. I chose him, because of his
expressions. For a story that is very complex and
deals with relationships among a great number of
people, you need a lot of expressions. I wrote him
descriptions of what Jamie and Claire looked like.
Things like: “She’s tall for a woman of the time. Her
hair has a personality of its own. She should look
intelligent and competent.” I liked his version of
Claire right away. His take on Jamie was very
striking and arresting, but we still went through sev-
eral back-and-forths.
GN: Who would play them in a movie?
DG: I don’t watch TV or movies very much, so I
don’t even know what actors are available to play
them. An actor is an artist, and their job is to
embody the character. The physical attributes are
not as important as the actor’s grasp of the charac-
ter’s intrinsic qualities. That is why they
have casting directors.
GN: How was graphic novel story telling
diff erent for you?
DG: My writing has always had a strong
visual component. In this case, you are
still using visual elements, but it is more
of a snapshot thing. You exercise more
precision in selecting the images. It has
to carry the story panel to panel, page to
page. At the same time, dialog is the
single most important thing you have to convey a
character. I had a lot of text to choose from. I had to
choose the things that were most indicative of the
character and also carried the plot.
GN: Can we expect more graphic novels from you?
DG: If this fi rst one sells, certainly.
GN: What’s your best advice on how to write a
book?
DG: Sit down and put words on paper. It is the only
way to learn to write. There are no classes. But
number one, you have to read. Read everything. It
helps you determine what you want to write and it
helps you distinguish technique – why you like one
mystery more than another, why this one has
engaging characters and the other is wooden. The
second rule is to write. The third rule is the most
important – and that’s don’t stop.
GN: What is your writing process?
DG: What I start on any given day is a kernel – a
piece of dialog, an image or an emotion. I write a
line or two and then I sit there and stare at it and
then move words around. As I do this, my mind is
taking images from the compost pile. What time of
day is it? Is it daylight? I can tell by the light if it is
winter. It is very slow, and the scene gradually grows
around this kernel. Eventually, I have a complete
scene.
