Suggested Loop ToursHere are seven circular routes to help you get acquainted with Princeton.

Forrestal Loop (short) 6.2 miles. Be-gin at the parking area near the Millstone River Aqueduct. Take Mapleton Rd, turn left onto the D&R Canal towpath. Cross over Rte. 1 and cut through the R.W. John-son Foundation to Campus Rd. Return to the start using the sidewalk over Rte. 1.

Forrestal Loop (extended) 13.5 miles. From Forrestal Village, take College Rd to Plainsboro Center and Princeton Junction. Return to Princeton via Alexander Rd. View the Elsie the Cow memorial at Walk-er Gordon Rd, and the War of the Worlds marker in Van Nest Park. Connects to the Lenape Trail in Plainsboro.

Pretty Brook Loop 6.4 miles. Start at Community Park North. Hilly route includes a pedestrian bridge over the scenic Stony Brook. An optional off-road route into Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Preserve is for those with fatter tires.

Greenway Meadows Loop 7.5 miles. Highlights include Streicker Bridge over Washington Rd, Princeton University Campus and Graduate College, and several parks.

Littlebrook-Riverside Loop 5.3 miles. A network of mostly quiet roads, includes a path through Van-Dyke-Wight Woods connecting the two sections of Terhune Rd. Be vigilant when crossing Nassau- Kingston Rd.

Kingston Towpath Loop 6.2 miles. Outbound via Prospect and Rte. 27 to Kingston. Return via Kingston Locks and the D&R towpath to Harrison St. Be alert for joggers on the shoulder of Rte. 27.

Quaker Road Loop 5.4 miles.Un-paved. From Turning Basin Park, explore the D&R towpath, the mixed-use trail along Quaker Rd past Updike Farmstead, and the Trolley Track Trail through the Institute Woods.

Regional Trails* Delaware and Raritan Canal (the D&R)

runs north to New Brunswick and south to Trenton, where it connects to trails along canals on both sides of the Delaware River. www.dandrcanal.com. The D&R is one segment in the East Coast Greenway, a 3000-mile trail system running from Maine to Florida. www.greenway.org.

* Six Mile Run Reservoir, part of D&R Canal State Park northeast of Kingston, has nice mixed-use trails. Access via Route 27, Jacques Lane or Canal Road.

* The Lawrence-Hopewell Trail is a 22 mile loop of multi-use paths with some on-road sections. Includes a 5 miles stretch through the 1600-acre Mercer Meadows. lhtrail.org

* The Lenape Trail in Plainsboro is 2 miles long and mostly paved. It follows Plainsboro Pond.

* The 10-mile Freedom Trail begins in Kingston and is planned to follow an old rail grade to Monmouth Junction. 2.6 miles have been completed.
