GREEN AND CLEAN INDOORS-A STEP TO CONSERVE THE OUTDOORS Post Diwali not only us are exhausted from the Diwali celebrations but mother earth is also exhausted due to enormous air pollution. Until recently nobody suspected there could be anything like indoor air pollution. With the development of technology and the better insulation of buildings in the past decades to save heating costs and conserve energy. the air indoors grew more stagnant allowing for common household pollutants to accumulate and in turn affect our health Using plants at home or in office therefore should be done not only with decorative purposes but also to aim at improving the quality of air we breathe. Sansevieria Laurentii It is also known by the name “mother in law’s
tongue” which is native to Africa. This plant has long spear shaped green leaves and is pretty much indestructible‐ it can be placed almost anywhere, doesn’t require much watering or light and takes up little space.
The one climatic condition which it will not tolerate is temperature below 45 degrees for extended periods.
Chlorophytum comosum It is also commonly called the “spider plant” and is native to South Africa. It is a glass like perennial in the lily family and is especially popular with beginners as it is easy to grow and is very tolerant of neglect, being able to survive in a wide range of conditions. Spider plants have also been shown to reduce foemaldehyde in
air at home. Gerbera daisy It is an ornamental plant, very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. Effective in
removing both benzene and trichloroethylene from the air. Chrysanthemum It is a perennial flowering plant native to Asia and northeastern Europe. The name chrysanthemum is derived from Greek ,chrysos {gold} and anthos {flower}.

There are many things we can do indoors that have a positive influence on our habitat and a lasting impact on overall environment. Beyond seeking out products designed to boost your IAQ, try these techniques to enhance your environment and conserve resources:

*
Shred the waste paper and soak it overnight in water.
*
Blend it in a mixer-grinder with a paste of fenugreek (methi) seeds. For colour, add natural coloring agents like Turmeric powder (Haldi), etc.
* Put water in a pan with a wire-mesh inside.
*Pour a cup of the blended paper pulp over the mesh and spread it evenly.
* Lift the mesh and drain the water.
*Place the mesh on one side of an open newspaper and close the newspaper.
*Carefully flip the newspaper so that the mesh is on top of the pulp.
*Press a flat wooden board on the newspaper to squeeze out water.
* Open the newspaper and take out the mesh.
*Keep the newspaper open for drying. Dried leaves and petals can be spread on the sheet while it is wet.
* Once dried, peel off the sheet from the newspaper. Lightly iron the sheet under a piece of moist muslin cloth.
28th October is celebrated as world paper free day but it is an integral part of everyday life. The technological advance with computers and photocopiers has increased the consumption and wastage of paper. Indian consumption of paper is five kilograms per capita, with an expected growth rate of 6-7% per annum over the next five years. By using paper carelessly, we contribute to the depleting forest cover, drastic climate change and water pollution. Pulp and paper industry is a major contributor in terms of air and water pollution. Thus Recycling of Paper is required. Recycling of paper not only saves trees and minimizes pollution, but also reduces the waste problem by utilizing waste material like used paper, cotton rags and unwanted biomass. Besides this recycled paper uses 55% less water and helps preserve our forests, reduces water and air pollution, and eliminates many toxic
pollutants.
PAPER – an essential need
Paper could even be recycled at home by these following steps:
![Page 7: GREEN AND CLEAN INDOORS - St. Thomas' School NEWSLETTER2.pdf · Celebrate Diwali- EcoStyle Make an appropriate choice To lessen the cracker noise. Use recycled paper to wrap your](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022050301/5f6ace8325c67b3e3778ffd8/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
THEREFORE, RECYCLE PAPER. RECYCLE WASTE,
HELP TO REDUCE AND REUSE- SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT.
The environmental conditions ,increased warming has forced us recycle all that we can…Besides paper nowadays many items are being recycled like mobile phones, cloth material, other electronic waste etc. Habitat alteration by the fishing activities like trawling, a method of fishing that involves pulling a fishing net through the water behind one or more boats, is perhaps the least understood of the important environmental effects of fishing. The use of mobile fishing gear has become a source of concern because of the size of the affected fishing
grounds, the modification of the substrate, disturbance of benthic communities, and removal of non 3target species. Also, because of
declines in many traditional fisheries, efforts to find under‐exploited fish populations have increased interest in exploiting less accessible, previously unfished areas. These efforts have been facilitated by the development of new gear and navigational aids. Extensive new regions of the continental shelf, slope, submarine canyons, and seamounts have been exposed to the effects of bottom degrading.
Expansion of fishing into new territory could lead to the loss of habitats that might have provided as refuge for heavily exploited species. Any fishing gear will affect the flora and fauna of a given location to some degree, but the magnitude and duration of the effect depends on several factors, including gear configuration, towing speed, water depth, and the substrate over which the tow occurs. Unifying working fishing men and women from all over the globe was the purpose for the World Forum of Fish Harvesters & Fish Workers that came together in New Delhi in 1997. But as this international organization of fishing groups works for unity and to be more inclusive, one way now for fishermen to demonstrate solidarity and pride is through the celebration of World Fisheries Day on 21 November. This day serves as an important reminder that we must focus on changing the way the world manages global fisheries to ensure sustainable stocks and healthy oceans ecosystems.

Your choices and selections would decide the consequences So be careful about your preferences. So let’s make this Diwali a little different By taking a step forward to conserve environment. ---By Tuli Bhattacharjee and Shivya Arora.
Let Us Recreate Nature What has happened to the breeze that blew? With the touch of Nature we all grew. Clean air that made us breathe, Has now been spoiled by human’s lusty greed. Where on Earth can we find peace? Without the divine touch of trees. The birds that minstrelled when the Sun had shone, Have now grown more morose and mourn. People say they’ve always loathed this condition, But seem to be oblivious of any solution. It’s high time, we’ve been late, Why not try to change this evil fate? For the beauty of the Earth, For the beauty of the skies. People haven’t discovered it yet, Nature is God in disguise! So let us take an oath for its protection, After all, our nature also needs some attention. Oh! Mother Earth, I’ll pace forth this time, To do something for posterity and let Nature shine... ---By Kushagra Dua.
