From the President’s Desk
We NEED the community to help support the Green and Gold Foundation financially!! Please consider donating for a
specific program and/or public service at the B Street Community Center (ie: Summer Enrichment, Arts & Recreation; Transition Support: Food Pantry, Utilities Support, Scholarships)
Respectfully, Terrye Y. Howell Green & Gold Foundation, Inc., President 2013-2015
Featured Board of Director
Deming Cowles Deming Cowles is the executive director of the Family Literacy Academy of Lake Wales and is a Board of Director of the Green & Gold Foundation. Deming believes that
each individual must make the earth a better place through service to others.
He developed the community’s first comprehensive family literacy program over nine years ago after becoming acutely aware of the gaps in education and the many hardships our lower socioeconomic families face. The Academy offers GED/ESOL classes to parents, tutoring for their children and parenting/life skills classes. His approach addresses the multiple prongs of poverty - literacy, inadequate housing and social service delivery.
He continually motivates families to attend weekly classes and coordinates community support for tutoring, meals, incentives and family field trips. He also seeks funding for the academy’s continuation. The academy is funded for 50 families but Deming doesn’t turn people away so the enrollment realistically has been as high as 85 adults and more than 100 children. Mr. Cowles transport families to class, to court hearings, to doctors’ appointments and once as far as Tampa to help a family with immigration issues.
Deming has set up a 55-member Family Literacy Coalition that meets monthly to support the families, break down barriers to their success and resolve other “big-picture” problems. The academy has 59 graduates (GED recipients) with over half of them attending Polk State College.
Deming has brought people to the table that would not have had a seat, empowering not only the families but the community. In spite of community accolades and awards, Deming feels he is doing no more than following his Eagle Scout philosophy, “Leave your campsite better than you found it.”
B Street Community Service Center has a new Executive Director
On February 18, 2014, B Street welcomed its new part-time Executive Director, Dr. La Toya Davis-Craig. Dr. Davis-Craig, a native of Miami, FL moved to Lake Wales in May of 2013 when her husband, Mr. Osubi Craig, became the new director of the Polk State College Lake Wales Arts Center. Along with their two daughters, they have jumped right in and made Lake Wales their home.
A graduate of Florida A&M University with a degree in Business Administration and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Florida State University in Arts Administration, Dr. Davis-Craig’s passion and area of interest is in community building. “I am excited to be able to serve the community. I know that there are some challenges ahead, but I look forward to garnering the community support needed to help secure a solid future for B Street.”
Applications now being accepted for the
Summer Program
B Street Community Service Center is happy to announce that registration has opened for the Summer Enrichment Arts and Recreation Program (S.E.A.R.). This year’s program will take place at Janie Howell Wilson from June 16, 2014 – July 24, 2014. The six-week program is open to all Lake Wales Public and Charter School students who have completed grades 1 through 5 during the 2013-2014 school year. The Monday – Thursday (9:00 am – 3:00 pm) summer program is geared to extend the school year by providing morning academic remediation and enrichment of academic skills with lessons that adhere closely to the curriculum the students followed throughout the preceding school year. Each afternoon, students will participate in guided recreation, computer, and arts activities. Students will also receive a free breakfast and lunch.
B Street is seeking donations to help defray the costs to the parents for field trips and educational outings planned for the summer. The cost to sponsor a child is $100. This, or any other donation, for the summer program will go a long way in helping the youth of our Lake Wales community.
