Gross Anatomy of the Muscular System
Facial, Trunk and Back Muscles
When studying the muscle models
• Learn the NAME and LOCATION of the muscle on the model.
• Learn the ACTION of the muscle (what action it produces when the muscle contracts)
A note on muscle actions…
• On the lab exam, you only need to provide ONE action.
• The action MUST have an ACTION word and the BONE/BODY part being acted upon.– Example: Acceptable – FLEX ARM
Unacceptable - FLEX
Facial Expression Muscles
• Epicranius – frontal belly
• Orbicularis oculi
• Orbicularis oris
Facial Expression Muscles
Epicranius - occipital belly
Zygomaticus
Risorius
Origin & Insertion
• Muscles attach at each end to a different bone
• ORIGIN: The bone that DOESN’T move when the muscle contracts
• INSERTION: The bone that DOES move when the muscle contracts
