Maestral®, a cold, dry and gusty windfrom the northwest in the Rhone valley, which iscaused by high pressure in the north Atlantic andnorthern Europe together with low pressure overthe Mediterranean and the Gulf of Genoa. It can blow for up to nine days. It chases theclouds away, and leaves the air cool and clean. Its name comes from the Latin magistralis:“of a master or the Provencal mistraù: master”.

D E S C R I P T I O N
The Maestral® is an external wall-cladding system, based on double-wall terracotta panels, mechanicallyfixed without interlocking by means of metallic clips(stainless steel X5CrNi18-10 (1.4301) fasteners) usingtwo possible methods:• either fixed onto the concrete or masonry wall, by
means of a special mounting structure (non-insulated cladding) (see diagrams 3 and 5).
• or fixed onto a wall by the intermediary of a specialwood or metal mounting structure standing off thewall to permit the construction of a cladding withintegrated thermal insulation (insulated cladding)(see diagrams 4 and 6).
This system is regulated by Technical Approval (CSTB)N°2/02-920 for Maestral® 7 cm and N°2/03-1038 forMaestral® 4 cm.Maestral® can also be installed vertically according todescription made in Technical Approval.

• Maestral®Maestral® Terracotta panels meet the specificationsof NF P 13.304 and EN ISO 539.2 Method Cstandards. The manufacturing of these bricks is supervised bythe Scientific and Technical Centre for BuildingIndustry (CSTB) within the context of approval of theproduct according to Technical Approval. This frostresistant product resists well to both soft and hardshocks (until Q4 classification depending the productand according to AFNOR NF P 08.301 and NF P08.302 standards), which allows them to be used inthe most exposed areas of the ground floors ofbuildings. Furthermore, the ease with which a brickcan be replaced enables bricks to be changedanywhere on the façade without any particularcomplications. Its qualities concerning the effect ofpressure/ depression due to wind (>1120 Pa)enable it to obtain safety coefficients sufficient foruse without restriction on buildings which height issuperior to 45 m.
MAESTRAL®
The Maestral® is the first long cladding tile on the market (up to152 cm). This double-skin impact-resistant product (up to Q4) isavailable in two thicknesses. Its open joints provide betterventilation and thermal insulation for the façade.Architecturally, the verticals are emphasized by the sections, slightly protruding. The Maestral® can also be combined with Acoustic Bardeau (foracoustic applications). It is available with three surfaces and in six colours.

The Terreal Maestral® meets the followingstandards:> Expansion in contact with humidity (according
to NF P 13.304)> Water absorption (according to NF P 13.304)> Resistance to efflorescence (NF P 13.304)> Resistance to shattering (NF P 13.304)> Resistance to frost (EN ISO 539.2 Method C)
• Fixing fasteners9 types of fasteners are available:3 for Maestral® 7, 3 for Maestral® 4, 3 for both.
For each Maetsral®, there is a:1- lower right/left clip2- standard left clip3- standard right clip4- upper left clip5- upper right clip6- angle right/left clip(see diagram 17).
Designed for the fixing of standard Maestral®, the clipfasteners are made of stainless X5CrNi18-10 (1.4301) andremain unchanged over time. The clip fasteners areequipped with closed cell foam wedges which preventmovement and absorb shocks to the walls during fixing. This foam wedge also plays the part of an anti-vibrationacoustic shock absorber. These products are subjected totests reports done by the CSTB and VERITAS (see diagrams 11 and 18).
• SectionsExtruded aluminium sections in aluminium alloyAGS 6060 T5 with minimum thickness of 25/10emm. There are two types of sections: standardmounting section and angle section for directfixing and indirect fixing methods. (see diagram 19)

> the construction of walls type III (direct fixingmethod).
Maestral® can also be used as decorative finish(screens, bases of buildings, road systems, covering… ) allowing the construction of asecond cover for acoustical insulation.
I N S T A L L A T I O N
Following a previously traced grid pattern, the fixermarks out the secondary vertical frame to whichthe right and left clips will be attached (see diagrams 3 and 4). The method ofconstruction of the metal framing must conform tothe standard described in the CSTB worksheet n°.3194 dated February 2000.The T or Ω -shaped metallic rail (constituting thesecondary frame) receives on each wing, right andleft, the left and right fasteners supporting theMaestral®.The abutment of the central post of the T or Ω -shaped rail projects beyond the Maestral® facing(see diagrams 5 and 6) : The effect is to create aspray which avoids stagnation of the runoff water. As a variation, installation on wooden framesequipped with joint-cover spine is possible if it is inconformity with CSTB worksheet n°. 3316 datedFebruary 2001 and the modification no.3422.
The choice of the fixing method must be made inaccordance with the regulations presented in CSTBworksheet n°. 1661 dated July/August 1980. In caseof installation with insulation from outside, an airspace of at least 2,0 cm must be left between theback of the Maestral® and the insulation in orderto permit free air circulation. It is important to leave a vertical joint ofapproximately 1 to 1,5 cm between the central postof the mounting structure and the Maestral® (seediagrams 5 and 6), in order to ensure the easymaintenance of the system (replacement of theMaestral®).

INSTALLATION GUIDE MAESTRAL®
Use a laser or spirit level to draw thehorizontal line used as a start refer-ence for inserting profiles. The start-ing point is determined according tothe installation grid.
Mark out the area chosen for theprofiles according to the verticaljoint desired. Verticality adjusted byblocking, if necessary, to avoiddeforming the profile support.
Repeat the previous operation untilthe desired height is reached: posi-tion the running clips on theMaestral®, insert it on the lower clipsand fasten one clip and then theother.
Position the upper clips for the lastMaestral®. Offset the side element sothat the visible clip can be mounted, then repeat the operation for theother upper clip.
Position the Maestral® with the ver-tical joint desired.
The starter clips are inserted fromthe lower point of the profile posi-tioned on the horizontal marker (2self-tapping screws/clip).
Place the clips running right and lefton the Maestral® and position theprofiles on the lower clips.
Fix the clips against the core of theprofile using self-tapping screwsand according to the module (210mm, 310 mm or 420 mm).
