When natural or reconstituted stone has been chosen as a cladding
material it is necessary to give consideration to the following key
areas for the purposes of choosing the most appropriate connec-
tion system:
▪ Type of structural material (e.g. concrete/block)
▪ Design of cavity (e.g. ventilated/full fi ll insulation)
▪ Design of stone joint (e.g. open/closed)
▪ Size of stone (e.g. thickness/panel size)
▪ Design life of building
Once these considerations have been made HALFEN can advise on
the most suitable anchoring method. Included in this catalog are
typical examples of substrates that can be anchored using HALFEN
systems, some of which are illustrated opposite.
HALFEN Systems
In 1929 HALFEN started to produce adjustable connection sys-
tems in Germany. Today, HALFEN produces an extensive range
of products for the construction industry which are available
worldwide. HALFEN’s range of anchors for stone façades cater
for both natural and reconstituted stone. They can also accom-
modate a wide variety of backing structures including concrete,
brick or blockwork and metal stud frames. Some of the HALFEN
stone anchors can be combined with other products from the
HALFEN range such as cast-in channels to provide an even more
fl exible connection solution. Examples of the systems are pro-
vided to give an overview of how the system will work in typical
situations. Design information is given for individual stone sup-
port systems. Illustrations and photographs of projects that have
been completed using HALFEN stone support systems are shown
throughout.

HALFEN BODY ANCHORProduct range
HALFEN Body Anchor
The HALFEN Body Anchor range covers a wide
variety of cavity widths and load capacities.
The anchor consists of two main components;
a body with a vertical slot, and a threaded
spade bolt with dowel pin. The vertical slot
allows for up and down adjustment for
connecting to the structure. The threaded
spade bolt allows in and out adjustment to
accommodate variations in cavity width. The
body is capable of being swivelled up to 15°
either side of vertical thus providing additional
horizontal adjustment.
Body Anchors can be bolted to HALFEN
cast-in channels for maximum adjustment,
or installed using drilled bolts. Using
channels or expanding bolts for connection
to the backing structure allows immediate
loading of the Body Anchor.
All Body Anchors are available in several
confi gurations with a choice of either full
or half dowel pins. Full dowel pins Ø 3/16”
x 2-¾ ” (Ø 5 x 70 mm) have a knurled zone
to prevent the dowel dropping through the
hole in the spade bolt. They are supplied
loose with one sliding sleeve. The dowels
are located by tapping them lightly into the
hole in the spade bolt. Half-dowels pins
Ø 3⁄16” x 1-3⁄8” (Ø 5 x 35 mm) are
already attached to the spade bolt at the
factory. Full and half kerf plates are also
available to special order as alternatives to
dowel pins.

Thanks to its tubular cross-section, the
HALFEN UMA anchor is especially suited for
grouting into concrete and for fi lled/solid
concrete blockwork or brickwork*.
The anchors support vertical and horizontal
load and are available in diff erent designs.
Depending on the design, the anchors
bridge up to 11 - ¾ ” (300 mm) and are able
to carry vertical loads up to 891 lbs. (3.96 kN)
Three direction adjustment can be achieved
within the oversize hole drilled in the
structure.
HALFEN UMA anchors are often used in

Each panel is usually connected at four
points. Thermal insulation should be cut out
before drilling the anchor hole. Panels are
usually installed beginning on the left-hand
side of the building. Direction of installation:
from left to right and from the bottom up.
Anchoring in vertical jointsStarting installation at the left-hand of the
building:
Using suitable bolt or grout-in anchor
Position the 1st HALFEN anchor under the
left bottom corner of the panel and install
to the structure. Position the 1st natural
stone panel onto the 1st support anchor
and wedge the righthand side.
Fasten the support anchor and restraint
anchor for the 1st vertical joint and adjust.
Re-insert the cut out thermal insulation so it
fi ts tightly. Push the anchor pin through the
bracket and push it into the sliding sleeve.
Fill the pin holes of the 2nd natural stone
panel with mortar. Then push the 2nd panel
up to the 1st panel. Leave a gap of at least 3⁄32” on the sliding sleeve side.
Fit the next support anchor and restraint
anchor. Adjust and continue with the same
sequence.
The second-last panel is anchored at the
right-hand edge in the vertical joint with
one-way pins. The last natural stone panel at
the right-hand edge of the building is placed
onto 2 support anchors in the horizontal
joint.
Finishing Installation at the right-hand edge
of the building:
Anchoring in horizontal joints
First drill holes in the structure for the sup-
port anchors needed for the 1st and 2nd
row of panels. Align support anchors and
fasten to the structure. Re-insert the cut-out
thermal insulation so it fi ts tightly.
Fill the pin holes of the 1st panel with mor-
tar and place the 1st panel on the bottom
anchors. Supporting the panel, adjust its
2nd row support anchors to leave a gap of
at least 3⁄32” between the top edge of the
panel and the under-side of the 2nd row
support anchors. Push the plastic sliding
sleeve into the top pin holes and push the
anchor pin through the bracket and into the
sleeve below.
Working left to right repeat this procedure
for the 1st row and subsequent rows of
panels.
The above information is only provided as
a guide. Full assembly instructions are pro-
vided with the stone support anchors.

HALFEN sub structure systems are designed
to transfer the load of the external cladding
to the structural frame of the building.
HALFEN substructures typically consist of a
series of vertical rails spanning fl oor to fl oor
which only require restraint at wide vertical
spacings. This reduces the number of con-
nections to the inner skin and consequently
the frequency with which the insulation/wa-
terproofi ng is breached. Fewer connections
to the inner skin reduces thermal bridging
and pre-installation of the sub structure al-
lows rapid installation of the stone cladding.
For these reasons HALFEN substructures
are typically used as support for rainscreen
and thin stone cladding panels with open or
sealed joints.
HALFEN off ers primarily two product lines
for sub structures to accommodate diff erent
conditions and life cycle requirements:
▪ stainless steel structure SUK
▪ aluminum structure UKB
The HALFEN SUK stainless steel structure
is suitable for aggressive environmental
conditions and for high load requirements.
The HALFEN UKB aluminum system is
suitable for refurbishments because of its
light weight and easy installation.

The HALFEN SUK stainless steel substruc-
ture is an adjustable suspended channel
system for cavities ≥ 6-¼ ” (≥ 160 mm). It is
particularly suitable for widely varying cavi-
ties. This feature makes it very suitable for
re-cladding projects as well as new
structures.
Structural connections are vertically spaced
approx. 10 feet apart (3.0 m). This facili-
tates fast installation to the slab edge or
concrete backing wall using HALFEN cast-in
channels (for maximum adjustment) or site
drilled bolts. Support and restraint anchors
are continuously variable in height allowing
easy adjustment.
Material: Stainless steel A4 (AISI 316)
Hot dip galvanized rails may be provided at
customer request.

HALFEN NATURAL STONE SUB STRUCTURESHALFEN UKB Aluminum Sub St ructure
The HALFEN UKB sub structure comprises
of vertical aluminum channel sections that
run in the cavity between the structure and
natural stone cladding. Requiring few con-
nections to the structure the system reduc-
es thermal transfer to a minimum. The sub
structure accommodates cavities between
5 ⅛ ” and 12 ½ ” (130 and 320 mm) and
provides adjustment of ± 3/4” (± 20 mm) in
all three directions.
The rail is supported on stainless steel
brackets, that have been designed for dead
loads of up to 787 lbs. (3.5 kN).
They are fastened to the structure using
