Hannah More Primary School Newsletter 5 June 2015
Hello everyone Welcome back for the final term of this school year. It has been a busy and
successful year so far, and this term looks set to continue this pattern.
We enjoyed KS2 sports days on Monday and Tuesday, especially our visit to the
City Academy. This gave children the opportunity to use top class facilities and
compete in an excellent sporting arena. Our thanks to them for lending us their
venue, and to Mr Cook for organising the whole event. He has rescheduled the
Year 1 and 2 event for July.
Next Tuesday we are once again inviting parents to experience teaching and
learning at Hannah More. This is the third Open Morning of the year and this
time we hope parents will take the opportunity to visit different classes and
observe teaching at different stages. We know you will see a range of excellent
teaching - this term we are offering lessons from the wider curriculum beyond
just English and Maths.
Next Friday is our Summer Fair. If you have not already offered to get involved
in one way or another, please do so! This is a community event and relies on
the support of parents to make it happen.
Have a lovely weekend. I hope to see some of you on the family bike ride
tomorrow, leaving school at 10 am and heading to the SS Great Britain!

News from the classes …
Reception classes … This week we learnt a poem called ‘The Worm that Wouldn’t
Wiggle’. The children enjoyed going on a worm hunt and thinking about different words
to describe worms. We also learnt about the rhyming words in our poem. At home,
please help by asking your child to teach you their new poem. Can you think of
any other rhyming words?
Year 1 … This week we learnt a story called ‘Lost and Found’. We focused on adding
speech and describing words to our writing. In Maths we practised lots of addition and
subtraction and learnt how to add and take away in our heads. You can help at home
by reading lots of stories with your child, to help them learn new and exciting
words to use in their stories!
Year 2 … In Literacy, we learnt a new story called ‘How to Catch a Star’. We wrote diary
entries and focussed on descriptive writing. In Maths, we practised solving word
problems. In Topic, we learnt about special times in people’s lives. Please make sure
your child eats breakfast every day next week and gets a good night’s sleep - in
preparation for Year 2 SATs tests.
Year 3 … We started to learn the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus this week. We
acted out the story and tried out different roles as well as discovering the wax and
feathers in the year 3 area! In maths we compared and ordered numbers on a number
line. We also started our topic on Ancient Egypt by looking at the landscape around the
River Nile. Please research what your child might like to wear on our Ancient Egypt
day, which will be towards the end of this term.
Year 4 … This week, we learned a ‘tragedy’ story. The children thought about advice
they would give to the bullies and focussed on the feelings throughout the story. In
numeracy, we rounded numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. In topic, we shared
stories about our families’ lives. We really enjoyed telling stories and drumming around
the fire this week! At home, please help your child to round numbers.
Year 5 ...This week we practised our Literacy text ‘The Iron Man’. In Numeracy we
revised place value and used our knowledge of place value to order numbers. We also
solved problems involving negative numbers. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed sports day
both at school and City Academy. You can help at home by supporting your child to
practise ‘The Iron Man’ story.
Year 6 … This week Eagle class have been busy with sports day, taking part in carousel
activities on the field and also participating in races at the City Academy running track.
We also practised our new Literacy text ‘The Iron Man’. We have been writing creatively
and have produced some interesting pieces of writing as a result of this. Well done!
Please help at home by supporting your child to practise ‘The Iron Man’ story.
