I, Too, Sing America Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed-
I, too, am America.

Men By Georgia Douglas Johnson
They have dreamed as young men dream Of glory, love, and power; They have hoped as young men hope Of life’s sun-minted hour. They have seen as others saw Their bubbles burst in air, And they have learned to live it down As though they did not care.
