Ho Ho’s
AN EDITION OF
ofHeapFlavors
Happy Sunday, Ono readers! It’sbeen one brutal week for me. Irecently caught a pesky virus that
I just couldn’t seem to rid of. Fever, bodyaches, dizziness, nausea, chills, sore throat, congestion and cough attacks that kept meup all night — you name it, I had it.
Yet, of course, we all know that there’sno rest for the weary, and even though Iwas lacking an appetite (that’s a first!), Iknew I had to make the most of my ill-ness. So, for what it’s worth, I figuredwhy not explore the realms of ginger? Afleshy and aromatic root, ginger has beenused in cooking and healing for centuries, and is believed to be a powerful antioxi-dant that can relieve many health prob-lems, including cough, headache, nausea, dizziness and more. Superb! I was in luck!
So, this week, I ventured on the road torecovery and submerged myself in a com-plete ginger paradise. And thanks to thefollowing Ono, You Know establishmentsand their premier ginger specialties, I’mstarting to feel like myself once again!
Canton SeafoodRestaurant
To begin my searchfor ono grinds to helprid this cold of mine, I
headed to Canton Seafood Restaurant onKeeaumoku Street. Open daily from 10a.m. to midnight, this popular eateryamong locals boasts tasty and authenticNorthern Chinese cuisine, including awide array of flavorful entrees highlight-ing ginger.
“We have Ginger Chicken, Oyster withGinger and Onion Sizzling Platter, Gingerand Green Onion Lo Mein (noodles),Chinese Broccoli with Ginger Sauce —there’s so many ginger items on the
menu,” says assistant manager Elvin Man.And while all of these options are allur-
ing in their own right, it was CantonSeafood’s Beef with Ginger and Onion($10.99) and Sauteed Seabass Filet withGinger and Onion ($11.99) that made mymouth water with absolute delight.
Beef with Ginger and Onion is a classicas it’s sauteed to perfection and featuresmorsels of tender beef, slices of fresh gin-ger and a dash of green onion. Not a meateater? Sauteed Seabass Filet with Gingerand Onion also packs on a punch with itsabundance of ginger flair, and the housespecial shoyu sauce that accompanies it isnothing short of amazing.
“We use a lot of ginger in our dishesbecause it tastes good and it’s also verygood for your health,” Man explains.“There’s an old Chinese proverb thatsays, ‘Every good quality is contained inginger.’ Ginger is an excellent source ofminerals, especially potassium and vita-min B6.”
So, with that I piled my plate full ofthese glorious ginger creations and ascoop of rice, certain that I’d be on myway back to health with the very first bite!

As soon as I inquired about the restau-rant’s ginger specialties, owner CindyWong wasted no time in presenting mewith Hai-Nan Chicken Rice. Priced at$12.75 (add $2 for thigh portion), thissucculent dish features pieces of tenderchicken wing and breast, which is cookedin a house special sauce that is jaw-drop-pingly good and decorated with bits ofgreen onion.

Pork Hash (80 centseach), Mini Manapua
(85 cents each) and HalfMoon (80 cents each)
Right in the heart of Kapoleiyou’ll find Ho Ho ChineseCuisine, your one-stop shop
for all of your local Chinesefavorites at an affordable price.Dining Out recently took our crav-ings to this thriving foodie metrop-olis of sorts best known for its all-you-can-eat buffet, extensive a lacarte options and plethora of dimsum creations. Let’s just say ouradvice is simple: Come hungry!
“We have a large selection ofitems in our buffets that local peo-ple love, and our prices are veryreasonable,” says director of salesArmando Bauzon.
Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine hascalled Kapolei home for a decade, and has reeled in the appetites of
West Oahu residents and othersacross the state. This renownedeatery also is quite popular amongparty-goers seeking out the bestdeals.
“Here you can hold parties forany occasion. We can seat close to400 guests if needed,” Bauzonexclaims. “Birthday parties, wed-dings, anniversaries, graduationparties — we do it all!
“There are more than 30 itemsoffered in our lunch buffet andmore than 30 offered in our dinnerbuffet as well. What’s not to love?”he asks with a laugh.
And while there are the usualfavorites, such as Beef Broccoli,Orange Chicken, Egg Rolls, FriedRice, Gon Lo Mein and more fea-
tured in the buffet line, diners can’tseem to get their fill of Snow Crab,Shrimp Walnut, Salt and PepperShrimp and Ho Ho’s famous FriedChicken Wings.
“Everyday for lunch and onFriday through Sunday nights wehave our Salt and Pepper Shrimpavailable, and our customers keepcoming back for more,” Bauzonsays. “Dinnertime is all about thesnow crab.”
The dinner buffet is presentednightly starting at 5 p.m. and ispriced at $15.95 Monday throughThursday and $17.95 Fridaythrough Saturday. The lunch buf-fet, which is offered from 10 a.m.to 2:30 p.m., costs $9.95 Mondaythrough Thursday and $11.95
Friday through Sunday. Accordingto Bauzon, there are special buffetprices for keiki as well, so inquirewithin.
“Popular among our patronsduring lunchtime is LemonChicken, and the hot item rightnow is Butterfish with Black BeanSauce,” Bauzon states.
This past April, Ho Ho’s wastaken over by new management (asister company of Jade DynastySeafood Restaurant), and Bauzoncouldn’t be happier with the posi-tive response the restaurant hasreceived.
“We’ve been very busy and wehave a lot of returning customers. No where else on this side of towncan you find this kind of selection
D I N I N G O U T | J U N E 1 0 - 1 6 , 2 0 1 2 | 5
and great customer service.“Our main goal is to work
within our customers’ budgetsand help them save money. That’s why our buffet is soaffordable,” he adds.
And if you choose to person-alize your meal, Bauzon recom-mends ordering from the a la cartemenu, which includes a wide arrayof delicious Cantonese cuisine, such as Beef or Pork with TwinMushroom ($7.50), Kau Yuk($7.50) and Stir-Fried Fish Filetwith Vegetables ($8.95), amongothers.
However, don’t be distracted bythe buffet and a la carte optionsalone. If you’re crazy about dimsum, Ho Ho Chinese Cuisine
showcases an outstanding varietyof delectable treats Mondaythrough Saturday from as early as6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from8 a.m. as well.
“The most requested dim sumare Pork Hash (80 cents each),Half Moon (80 cents each),Steamed Manapua ($1.35 each),Baked Manapua ($1.45 each) andMini Manapua (85 cents each). You also can place takeout ordersfor dim sum,” Bauzon says, noting
Ho Ho’s efforts to give itspatrons the most convenientoptions possible. In fact, theestablishment even featuressame-day catering services, onlyrequiring a three-hour advancednotice.“We’re happy to see that our
catering is really doing well, thereare so many items to choosefrom,” Bauzon adds.
So, what exactly makes Ho HoChinese Cuisine stand out from therest?
Easy. According to Bauzon, freshness is key. “Everything hereis made fresh. Nothing is sitting inthe buffet line for too long.”

On the heels of thisseason’s AmericanIdol finale, I decid-
ed to catch up withHawaii’s first everAmerican Idol contestantJordan Segundo. As a tal-ented singer and per-former, and most impor-tantly, a true foodie atheart, Segundo was morethan happy to accompanyme to Jade DynastySeafood Restaurant in AlaMoana Center to tacklesome of the best in Chinesecuisine for this week’sDining with the Stars.
“I love Chinese food andI’m a big fan of JadeDynasty,” says Segundo, who started singing at theage of 5. “Here they serveauthentic Chinese food andthe quality of the food real-ly is superb. Everything isprepared perfectly and fla-vored just right. There’salways something new onthe menu, which I appreci-ate and always look for-ward to tasting,” he adds.
“The presentation of thefood also is always beauti-ful. You have to make sure
you take a photo of thefood before you eat it!”
And once restaurant gen-eral manager Gary Chanpresented us with a feast fitfor kings and the photoswere snapped picture-per-fectly, we pigged out oneverything from CrispyRoast Beef ($17.95) toChicken with RoastedGarlic ($17.95), HoneyWalnut Shrimp ($16.95)and Snow Mountain CharSiu Bun ($3.50), just toname a few.
“The Crispy Roast Beefis really nice and tender, and I like that the outside isa little crispy,” Segundoexclaims. “I like the chick-
en, too, you can taste thegarlic, but it’s not too over-powering — everything isblended together perfectly.”And what would a genuineChinese meal be withoutpaying tribute to Segundo’sfavorite, Honey WalnutShrimp? “I mean, what canI say? It’s a classic dish, andI like the way they serve itat Jade Dynasty because thesauce is at the perfect con-sistency and the batter iscooked just right,” he says.
So, while Segundo has adevout love for dining, histrue passion is found insinging. In fact, Segundorecently participated in twostudent tours throughout the
state with Adults Friendsfor Youth and the D.A.R.E.program, where he per-formed for and spoke toHawaii’s youth, encourag-ing them to stay drug-freeand pursue their dreams. And now, you can catchSegundo on stage Tuesdaythrough Saturday at 8:30p.m. through June 16 in theMagic of PolynesiaShowroom at Holiday InnWaikiki BeachcomberResort. He will join award-winning performers RockyBrown, Starr Kalahiki andLittle Albert as part of aspecial engagement ofRoberts Hawaii’s Return toParadise Starring Lani
Misalucha show. They willlend their voices to theHawaii-inspired musicalproduction while Misaluchacurrently fulfills a previouscommitment on theMainland.
"Being a part of theReturn to Paradise show isa great experience for me,and I’m thrilled to sharethe stage with such talent-ed singers and musicians.I’m grateful to RobertsHawaii for including me inthis great production,”Segundo shares.
“Audiences can expectan exciting show with fourgreat singers and a lot ofvariety — everything from
Hawaiian to Broadway, from pop to swing andeven some impersonationsas well. So there’s some-thing for everyone. We’reall very different and we allbring our unique style tothe show, but combinedtogether it creates a reallyentertaining show.”

Happy Portugal Day!
Officially known as Dia deCamoes, de Portugal e dasComunidades Portuguesas, today(June 10) is Portugal’s nationalholiday celebrating its rich histo-ry and culture. It also marks thedeath of poet Luis de Camoes, who wrote Portugal’s nationalepic poem titled Os Lusiadas.
In Hawaii, Adega PortuguesaRestaurant & Bar in Chinatowncelebrates the festive occasionwith traditional Portuguesedancers. But the main attractionis, of course, the food, which isavailable every day.
“Our head chef Ruben Oliverais from Portugal and our recipesare passed down from genera-tions,” says general manager
Tanner Scotson. “The food islike home-cooking, somethingyou’d expect if you went to yourfriend’s house and their parentswere cooking. It’s traditionalPortuguese food with a relaxingambience.”
Some of the popular dishes onthe menu are Vinho D’alhos($19) — pork loin marinated in avinegar-garlic sauce and servedwith sauteed onions, fried pota-toes and sauteed mixed vegeta-bles — and Bacalhau A Adega($22), which is a boneless filet ofcodfish topped with onions, redpeppers and garlic, and servedwith roasted red potatoes andsauteed mixed vegetables.
Locals also may enjoy thehearty Portuguese Bean Soup($6) comprised of kidney beans, carrots, potatoes and chourico
sausage, and Bitoque ($19),which is similar to a loco moco, but features a traditionalPortuguese style New York StripAngus steak topped with browngravy and a fried egg, and servedwith fried potatoes.
A lunch buffet also is available
for $12.95. Dishes vary each day,but will always consist of achicken, pork and pasta dish, white and yellow rice, and twosalads. And be sure to save someroom for dessert. Offered areArroz Doce ($3), which is a tra-ditional homemade sweet ricepudding with cinnamon,Serradura ($3) — a traditionalPortuguese layered dessert with acondensed milk base, and AdegaStyle Creme Brulee ($3).
Locally owned by Antonio“Trigo” Da Silva, Adega openedits bar in February and then therestaurant in March in the spacepreviously occupied by Mei Sumrestaurant, which has moved toNuuanu. A municipal parkinggarage is just steps away, as wellas metered street parking.
Flavorful and eventful, Adega
Portuguesa also adds Braziliandishes to its menu on Fridays andSundays, and there’s live musicTuesday to Sunday nights withWednesday being salsa night.

You may not be familiarwith the culinary term“Korean fusion,” but
that’s OK, neither was I beforeheading out to Red House onKeeaumoku Street this week. Here is all you need to know,Korean food is delicious. Koreanfood modernized with interna-tional flavors may be even better.
The funky, fun restaurant wasopened six months ago by formerpro golfer Justin Chun, and fea-
tures uptempo Korean musicvideos and appetizers such asKorean Noodle and Garlic Bread($5.99). Traditional garlic bread istopped with rice noodles, cheeseand a soy-based sauce that results
in a salty, sweet and chewy starterthat is satisfying without beingheavy. The small microgreensalad with a honey mustard vinai-grette just adds to the appeal.
Popcorn Shrimp ($5.99), isperhaps not a traditional Koreandish, which makes it a perfectaddition to the menu. However, the sweet, moist shrimp that iscoated with a crispy cover ofmystery ingredients is a perfectmatch for the rest of the menu. The sweet chili dipping saucejust adds a tangy element to thealready tasty dish.
The delicate Kimchee Pancake($6.99) is wonderfully plated andhas a texture that is slightly simi-lar to mochi. The flavor is mildspicy and difficult to describe. Itis, however, a pleasure to eat, andwho would want anything else?
One final recommendation isthe new Chef Special BonelessMoa with green onions ($14.99).The chicken is crispy, juicy, sweet and topped with a saucethat Chef Q is keeping a secret. Can’t blame him.
Every order is accompaniedwith a flavorful fish cake soupand freshly made kimchee.Delivery within the Makiki, AlaMoana, University and WardAvenue areas cost $2.99 fororders of $35 or more.

Yes, we did say late night. Kitn Kitchen is open until midnightMonday to Saturday. “We servethe full menu until midnight,”says owner Kit Yiu. “There are alot of employees who work inWaikiki, and after their shiftthey can swing by Kit n Kitchenfor something to eat.” Yiu alsonoted that Kit n Kitchen is newto the late-night market, but henoticed that there are a lot ofcustomers who come in forappetizers and drinks. “Rightaround 8 or 9:30 at night, wehave customers who come inand order pupus and wine. It’s agood hangout place for cus-tomers in the area.
“We wanted to focus on lamb, and we get our lamb from NewZealand,” Yiu says of thespread. “In Hawaii there aren’ttoo many restaurants that dolamb.” Preparing lamb istedious and time-consuming,but Kit n Kitchen has it down toan art and prepared three delec-table dishes for Dining Out.
Pepper Lamb ($16.95 twopieces, $20.95 three pieces,$24.94 four pieces) is preparedwith herbs and a black pepper
sauce and served with mixedveggies. The establishment puta whole new spin on the creamyItalian rice dish with its RosaLamb Risotto ($14.95) that’sserved with a savory risottosauce, vegetables and rosemary.
Kit n Kitchen’s LambWellington ($18.95) comeswrapped in flaky pastry andserved alongside perfectlycooked red tomatoes and rose-mary. “This is my son’sfavorite,” Yiu says with a smile.“He can eat six of those.”
But there’s more on the menuthan just lamb, such as RedWine Ox Tail Stew ($13.95).“We’ve been serving this dishsince we opened 11 years ago,”Yiu adds. “It’s popular and peo-ple always come back for it. We
mixed French cuisine with atouch of Asian influence.”
Sizzling Seafood Paella($14.95) has Spanish influence, and the taste of saffron shinesthrough the dish. This seafoodrice dish is cooked over an openfire with garlic butter, which
gives it that smoky flavor. Other customer favorites
include the late-night Kung FuSoup Noodle with ShrimpWanton ($8.95). Patrons canchoose their soup, type of noodleand two toppings. And for themorning dishes, Steak and Eggs($11.95) is at the top of the listand is served with chimichurrisauce and roasted potatoes.
To begin your meal, Yiu rec-ommends starting with CreamyMushroom or Creamy Cornsoups ($8.95). They are served infresh-baked French bread bowlsand come with a garden salad.
Kit n Kitchen also serves up atasty Eggs Benedict ($8.95) thatYiu admits is one of his personalfavorites. It comes with a but-tered English muffin, poachedeggs, a thick ham steak, a hookof hollandaise and your choiceof rice or potatoes.
Kit n Kitchen also has theoption for customers to substi-tute their starch for a gardensalad or mixed vegetables — atno extra cost!

“The chicken soaks up all the flavors ofthe sauce, so it’s very tasty as is, but it’salso served with ginger and spicy sauce onthe side for added flavor,” Wong states, noting that the entree comes with sea-soned rice and a bowl of hot chicken brothas well.
And I must admit, giving in to anythingginger, I fell in love with the ginger sauce,a zesty concoction of just the rightamounts of grated ginger and green onion.According to Wong, I’m not the only onewho’s a fan of Hai-Nan Chicken Rice.
“It’s doing really well at the restaurant,a lot of people like it,” she says. “This dishis especially popular in Hong Kong and
Singapore. It’s a healthy choice, it’s notdeep-fried.”

Nuuanu OkazuyaGinger, ginger, ginger abounds at
Nuuanu Okazuya, my go-to hot spot thatcaters to all my okazu cravings. This gemof an eatery has been around for nearlythree decades, and today you’ll find ownerMark Kitagawa and manager JohnathanMosley diligently working away, constant-ly creating new ono options. Take NuuanuOkazuya’s andagi, for example. With 80
flavors on the andagi menu alone, youwon’t know what hit you.
“It's like playing with vanilla icecream,” Mosley explains. “You just startplaying with flavors that you’re familiarwith or gain ideas from other people, andthat’s where all the flavors come from.”
Where was I to even begin? My sweettooth doesn’t subside, even when I'm ill.So, hoping to get the best of both worlds, the choice was easy, and I opted to samplethree different varieties of Mosley’sfamous ginger andagi. Priced at 75 centseach, you can have your fill of MincedGinger Andagi, Powdered Ginger Andagior Gingerbread Andagi.
“They’re all andagi, so, of course, theywill have the crunchy outside and soft
inside, but with the minced ginger andagithe ginger is more pronounced becauseit’s minced, whereas the powdered gingeris much more blended into the doughitself,” Mosley explains. Oh, and if you’rewondering about Gingerbread Andagi, myoh my, it’s my absolute favorite — ittastes exactly like fried gingerbread. Yum!
While the 80 andagi flavors rotate on aregular basis here at Nuuanu Okazuya,Mosley says there will surely be gingerandagi available starting today — and I’mquite certain they will sell like hot cakes... or andagi, for that matter!

Hopefully regular readersknow that the mission ofVeg’nOut is to visit Island
restaurants to find meat- andfish-free fare. If you’ve juststarted reading Dining Out (andwe’re so glad you did), then nowyou know. It's a service to boththe reader and our supportingrestaurants, as there are timeswhen you would like to joinfriends and/or family for lunchor dinner, but are hesitantbecause the eatery isn’t “vege-tarian.” So we do the diggingand you feast on the bounty —the perfect win-win scenario.
It’s typically not easy to findsomething vegetarian on aJapanese restaurant menu, sincefish is such a big part of theJapanese diet. But we don’t giveup easily here.
When perusing the menu atHinone Mizunone, your eyes aremet with numerous fish, shrimp, chicken and pork variations —
all very popular in Japanese cui-sine. But there’s one dish thatstands out for veggie lovers, although we had to be a bit cre-ative to find it, and you’ll have tospeak up and request it. Hey, wenever said this doesn’t require alittle effort on your part!
On the Teishoku menu isTempura with Shrimp, Squidand Vegetables ($13). The greatthing about Hinone Mizunone(besides its melodious name andcontemporary Asian ambiance)is that, according to operationsmanager Eiki Tamaki, guestsonly need to ask and the chef
will add more pieces of the taste-tempting vegetables — whichinclude tender pumpkin, stringbeans, eggplant and sweet potatoin a light, crisp coating — andomit the fish.
You know the drill withteishoku, but if you don’t, thispopular eatery is the perfectplace to learn. It’s a Japanese setmeal, which means it comeswith rice (kamadaki gohan-style, prepared the old-fashionedway), miso soup (which tradi-tionally is made with bonito, sonon-fish eaters should inquire),two side dishes and pickles. Addthe vegetable tempura to the setand you’ve got a full traditionalJapanese feast.
Not after a full meal? If you’dprefer the vegetable tempura a lacarte, it costs $10 for a platefulof the crisp vegetable goodness.

With the summer months nowunder way, what better way tostart a relaxing summer morn-
ing than by leisurely indulging in pas-tries? Located in Manoa — and filled witha tantalizing display of elegantly crafteddesserts, pastries, pizzas and sandwiches— Fendu Boulangerie has the perfect treatfor breakfast, lunch or a midday snack.
Owner and chef Niel Koep explains thatFendu Boulangerie features European-style pastries, as well as American-inspired dishes that are created inEuropean fashion.
“Our roots are French, but we have a lotof things that are American also,” heexplains. While certain items such asLemon Meringue Pie ($5.25), CarrotCake ($4.25) and Pumpkin Bread ($4.75for small; $8.75 for medium; $12.75 forlarge) are distinctly American fare, Fendumakes them in the European-style tradi-tion. Then, of course, there are Frenchitems, such as the wide selection of vari-ous baguettes, including FrenchSourdough Baguette ($5.25 for regular;$3.50 for petit).
“I have always enjoyed European-style(baking),” Koep says. “There’s less sugar in
it, and the items get baked fresh every day. Itis not loaded with artificial ingredients.”
This style of baking is not common herein the Islands, and perhaps that originalityis one thing that has been driving the cus-tomers to Manoa Marketplace in droves.
“People come here when they wantsomething that they cannot get anywhereelse,” Koep says, adding that all of thebakery’s menu items are popular.
“As far as the breakfast pastries go, theChocolate Croissant ($2.25) is the king(in amount sold) … And the LycheeStreusel Danish ($2.15) is very popular,”he says, before adding that, in fact, theApple Danish ($2.25) and BlueberryDanish ($2.15) sell equally well.
And for those of you who can’t seem toget your Fendu fix with only one meal,Fendu Boulangerie has tasty lunch
options, too. Lunch menu items includeBasil Pesto Chicken Panini ($8.50), whichfeatures chicken tenderloins sauteed withHawaiian salt and black pepper, grilled onrustic bread with bacon, mayonnaise, tomato, shallots and goat cheese, andHamakua Farms Mushroom Mania($18.25 for 14-inch and $11.25 for 8-inch), which includes alii, oyster, shimejiand shiitake mushrooms with crackedblacked pepper.
Desserts include Lilikoi Cheesecake($4.50) and Lychee Caramel Flan ($4.50).
With everything made in the European-style of baking, Fendu Boulangerie offerscustomers fresh, natural ingredients —many of which are locally sourced.
“It is an all-natural bakery,” Koep says.
“We bake all of our own doughs, and weuse raw, fresh ingredients — flour, butter, sugar, eggs, milk. We add no chemicals toanything that we do … Whenever possi-ble, we get things that are from Hawaii,”Koep says. “Like the mushrooms that weuse on our pizza and sandwiches are fromthe Hamakua Farm on the Big Island. Wesource a fresh, local tomato. Our Japaneseeggplant that we use also is local.”
And on top of all of that, everything atFendu Boulangerie is baked fresh. All ofthe bread and baked goods are made fresheach day, and all of the pizzas and paninisare made-to-order.

The European-style treats atFendu Boulangerie have had along journey to get to the
Islands. Founder Niel Koep — whoserves as chef and owner — hasbeen cultivating his craft throughoutmuch of his life.
“I started as a kid working in foodservice when I was 15 years old,” heexplains. “I was a floor sweeper in aseafood restaurant in New Jersey.”
From there, he worked in a numberof fine-dining restaurants throughoutthe East Coast, including well-knownestablishments such as Fromagerie.During those days, Koep neverstopped aiming to perfect his bakingskills — taking classes and studyingunder master chefs. One day, Koepasked one of his mentors for advice
on what his nextmove should be.When the chef sug-gested that Koep should work in ahotel in Hawaii, Koep jumped at theidea.
“Two weeks later I was inHawaii,” he says. “When the planelanded on Lanai, I knew it wasgoing to be an amazing experi-ence.” Koep spent the next 18years as the executive pastry chefat Four Seasons Resorts Lanai, buthe always wanted to start his ownbakery — something he had want-ed to do since he was 17.
“When I looked around Hawaii, Isaw a lot of the same type of bakedgoods and felt that if we did some-thing a little bit differently, that itmight be an attraction for the cus-tomers.”
Three years ago, Koep realized hislifelong dream when he opened FenduBoulangerie.
Although Fendu’s treats are alreadydelectable, the chefs are constantly ona mission to create perfect pastries.
“There is always trial and errorinvolved,” he says. “I don’t think wehave ever had one item that we madeand then the first time said, ‘that’s it.’It is always something we work on.”

No matter what ShaneYang is cooking up athis Curry King eateries,
he always keeps local flavors inmind. After opening the originalcastle of curry at WardWarehouse last September,Yang recently expanded hismarket to include a second loca-tion at Chinese Cultural Plaza inChinatown.
Customers have been comingback for second helpings ofclassic and healthy Japanesecurry made entirely from natu-ral ingredients, as well as bowlsof sizzling Paitan Ramen. Andthose aren’t the only enticingoptions in the restaurant’s reper-toire of flavorful dishes localslove to embrace.
Yang’s Sauteed Garlic ButterSalmon ($7.25) consists of freshAtlantic salmon pan-fried with asimple combination of butter, salt, pepper and a splash oflemon that lets the sauteed gar-lic — in all its effusive glory —stand out. “Hawaii loves garlic,”says Yang with a smile. Thesavory fish is complete withJapanese pickled vegetables andrice.
The owner also recommendstrying his Pork Yakisoba (friednoodles) priced at $6.25. “I usea lot of local flavors and make alot of local Japanese dishes,”Yang says. These noodles arefilled with fresh vegetables, cab-bage, bean sprouts and teriyakisauce. What gives them theirgreat flavor, though, is the addi-tion of pork belly that’s been
marinated in soy sauce andspices. “The fried noodles havealways been really popular,”says Yang.
Enjoy any of the curry aficiona-do’s dishes during lunch at theCultural Plaza, or for lunch anddinner at Ward. Either way, it’stime to get your local flavor on.

Since April 2009, Kakaako Kitchenstarted “Picnic on the Lanai,” a family-style, picnic-like dinner on the restau-rant’s patio in which the food comes outin big platters and conversations are notinterrupted by buffet lines. “Picnic on theLanai” is usually held on the last Sundayof the month, and reservations are takenin-person at the restaurant or by phone ore-mail ([email protected]).The “Picnic on the Lanai” event for June, however, will be taking place on Father’sDay, June 17, as executive chef andrestaurant owner Russell Siu prepares aspecial “Man’s Menu” that includes allof Dad’s favorites.
“The Father’s Day ‘Picnic on the Lanai’is more like a barbecue for Dad,” Siu saysof the menu, which features dishes such asChar Siu Baby Back Ribs and SlowRoasted Furikake Salmon with EdamameSalad. “We have a different theme for
every ‘Picnic on the Lanai.’ If I do mush-rooms, everything has mushrooms; lasttime it was Hawaiian-themed, so we hadan upscale, Hawaiian-style menu.”
“Picnic on the Lanai” features a pic-nic-like type of atmosphere, includinglong tables covered with tablecloths, paper plates and cutlery. The price forthe event is $35 a person, free for keikiages 5 and under, and $17.50 for keikiages 6 to 12. At every “Picnic on theLanai” event, BYOB beer and wine arewelcome with no corkage fee. TheFather’s Day “Picnic on the Lanai” startsat 6:30 p.m., but patrons usually startarriving earlier to uncork their bottlesand get the party started.
Kakaako Kitchen — which opened in1995 on Waimanu Street and moved toits current location in Ward Centre inMarch 2000 — features upscale cuisineat moderate prices, using local, freshingredients, according to Siu. With thebeginning of the summer and graduationseason, he emphasizes the popularity ofthe eatery’s catering menu.
“Our catering menu covers prettymuch everything,” Siu states. “We alsodo a lot of buffets. Our prices are very
reasonable and I think the amount offood you get for the price is good.”
Popular items on the restaurant’scatering menu include Sautéed Mahiwith Lomi Tomato and Ginger ButterSauce, Furikake Mahi with Soy GingerAioli, Sweet Chili Chicken with SweetChili Sauce, Shichimi Seared ChickenBreast with Soy-Citrus Sauce and KalbiRibs, or bone-in short ribs marinatedwith a house-made kalbi sauce. Theeatery also receives numerous orders forits vast variety of bentos. Examples ofthese bentos are Myna Bird Bento ($8.75per bento), comprising Five-Spice Shoyu
Chicken, Mahi Dore with Tartar Sauce,Spam, Steamed White Rice withFurikake and Kakaako Chow Mein; andthe Pueo Bento ($9.50 per bento), featur-ing Garlic Chicken, Furikake Mahi withSoy Ginger Mayo, Teri Grilled Spam,Steamed White Rice with Furikake andKakaako Chow Mein.
Kakaako Kitchen’s catering menu isoften sought for weddings, first birthdayparties, business events and home par-ties, according to restaurant managerBilly Bal. He encourages those planningto host parties or festivities — especiallyduring this graduation season — tocheck out Kakaako Kitchen’s extensivecatering menu. He notes that the eaterycan be found on Facebook — if cus-tomers “like” Kakaako Kitchen’sFacebook page and show this, they canget a free treat at the restaurant.
“Summertime is always big for eventslike graduations and birthday parties,”Bal says. “We have a busy time comingup and we’re posting a lot more thanbefore (on our Facebook page) becausesocial media is a huge thing now.”
