Hello HCPS Community!Welcome to this month’s issue of HCPS Wellbeing4U newsletter.

April is Stress Awareness Month. Stress can take a toll on all aspects of your health if it’s not controlled. But don’t fret, you’re not alone. There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t have stress from time to time and, for some of us, it’s a constant companion. This month’s health focus features stress management techniques and resources for HCPS employees, including access to a personal Health Coach through Humana’s Go365 program.

3. As long as you qualify, continue to follow the prompts to select either the online option OR the meetings plus the online option.

Platinum SpotlightBarbara Hancock, Elementary Instructional Leadership Director at ROSSAC

Barbara is competitive by nature, so when she learned about our Humana Vitality program (now Go365), she knew it was the perfect plan for her. It has enabled her to regain her health while reaping rewards. Barbara lost weight with the help of Weight Watchers® and used Go365 to help her set her goal. She plans to reach Lifetime Member status (reaching your Weight Watchers goal and maintaining your weight loss for six weeks) by June as an incentive to maintain her weight loss.

Becoming active has been an important part of Barbara’s journey to better health. She enjoys starting and joining challenges using her Go365 app. The educational opportunities available online and through the Health IQ app (download from Google

Play or iTunes) have given her the tools she needs to continue to eat healthy and increase her activity level. She recently went to Walgreens for her biometric screening, and the healthcare practitioner was so impressed with her numbers that she told her to “keep doing what you’re doing.” And Barbara isn’t the only one who benefited from making healthier choices; her husband benefited as well by losing 30 pounds.

She likes the recent changes to the new Go365 program, particularly the ability to earn one Point for every 1,000 steps tracked on her Fitbit. One evening, she saw she had 18,500 for the day. Knowing 20 Points was within reach, Barbara walked an additional 1,500 steps for a total of 20,000 for the day.

Spending those Points on valuable merchandise at the Go365 mall has been the easiest part of the journey. Barbara’s used her Bucks on Amazon gift cards to buy a new purse, and she’s gotten gift cards from Macy’s, free movie tickets, and more. Barbara got lucky and won a recent monthly jackpot drawing. Everyone who achieves at least Bronze Status is automatically entered into a monthly drawing. Winners get a choice of prizes based on their status level, with Platinum being the highest category. Barbara chose a 32” Samsung TV (pictured)—and it didn’t cost her any Bucks!

Humana Health Focus How to Stress Less

Josephine agreed to cover a class for a friend who had a late-afternoon appointment. Unfortunately, she forgot that she had parent-teacher meetings tonight. Her husband was working late, so there wasn’t anyone else to cook dinner and she definitely didn’t want to hear “McDonald’s again?” from the kids. It was only noon and she could feel her blood pressure rising already. How on earth would she get through the next few hours without a break knowing tonight’s schedule was overflowing?

If you can relate to this scenario, you’ll be relieved to know there are a number of ways to chill—right in the middle of your workday.

Take a breath. Learn breathing techniques to help calm you nearly instantly.

Give yourself a hand. You can massage your hands while sitting at your desk, targeting specific pressure points that will help to ease your anxiety.

Refocus with a quote. Line up some of your favorite inspiring quotes and take two as needed throughout the day. You’ll feel both heartened and smarter. Start by checking out thinkexist.com and brainyquote.com.

There’s an app for that! Get a fresh supply of relaxation tips by tapping an app on your smart phone. Try Equanimity Meditation Timer and Tracker or iZen Garden for iPhone. Android users can download Qi Gong Meditation Relaxation or Worry Box Anxiety Self-Help. Breathe2Relax works on both operating systems.

Have a good laugh. It’s true; laughter really is the best medicine. Watch a funny show or video, tell a funny joke, or go to a card shop and read funny cards. Whatever it takes, give yourself time for laughter each and every day.

Aetna Resources for Living Is All About YOU!Cyberbullying: Safeguarding Our KidsAt HCPS, we are committed to providing an educational setting that is safe, secure, and free from harassment and bullying for all of its students and school employees. The District will not tolerate unlawful bullying and harassment of any type. Bullying is painful, physically and emotionally —creating significant stress for our children, and their parents and teachers. It used to be that your children were safe at home, but you don’t have to be physically attacked to be the victim of bullying anymore—the internet can be used to bully others.

What if you think your child (or grandchild) is the victim of cyberbullying? The first step is keeping open lines of communication. Sit down with your child and talk about cyberbullying and what they can do to protect themselves. For example:

Use your best judgment. Do not send or post anything that you wouldn’t want all of your classmates to see, whether a text message, photo, or social media message.

Only open messages from known contacts—especially if there are typos in the subject line.

Protect personal information. Email and chat accounts should not include personal information—and you should never give out personal information when chatting online, including passwords.

Report it if you see it. If you or a classmate is being bullied, tell someone, whether your parents, a teacher, or another trusted adult.

For additional support, contact Aetna Resources for Living. Counselors are available 24/7, and additional tools are available online. Signs of CyberbullyingIn today’s society, it can be hard to keep up with who your child is contacting and who is reaching out to them. If you are concerned about cyberbullying, observe your child’s behavior and look for a few of these warning signs:

A child may be a target if he or she appears…

• Depressed, angry, or frustrated after going online

• Nervous or jumpy when using his or her device(s)

• Suddenly uneasy about going to school or hanging out with peers

A child may be cyberbullying others if he or she…

• Quickly switches screens or hides their device when you are close

• Laughs at device with unwillingness to share with you

• Starts hanging out with the “wrong” crowd

These are only a few warning signs. If your child is avoiding conversations about his or her online activity, try to open those lines of communication.
