Integumentary System
Composed of the skin, sweat and oil glands, hair, and nails.
Accounts of 7% of the body’s weight. Major role is protection. Varies in thickness. Composed of 3 distinct layers.
Epidermis Dermis Subcutaneous/Hypodermis

Epidermis
The outermost layer of the skin Not considered your “true skin” Water-repellent cells made of protein
(kerationcytes) make up 90% of the epidermis
Oil (sebaceous) and sweat glands (suderiferous) as well as hair follicles lie in the epidermis
Contains the stratified squamous epithelium and it lacks blood vessels

Dermis
Contains the nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, and blood vessels
Considered your “true skin” The dermis nourishes the epidermis. The middle layer of skin

Hair
Parts of the hair Shaft Root Hair follicle

Nails
Function is to protect the fingers and toes from injury.
Composed of keratin.
Consists of the nail bed, lunula, and the cuticle.

Burns Dehydration, protein loss, and infection
First degree burns-only the epidermis is damaged
Second degree burns-epidermis and upper dermis damaged. May include blisters
Third degree burns-full thickness. Not painful. Skin grafting is almost always necessary.
