Providing access to health and education and behavior services for young children and their families.
an a community effort change the life of a child? Indeed it can. Twenty years ago, three
community members joined forces and created Healthy Beginnings. As Kathy Emerson, one of the
program founders and former Deputy Superintendent of the High Desert ESD explained, “We
were concerned that we were finding kids too late. Out of this concern, program resources from
the county and the school districts were pulled together to implement the first free community
screening clinic. We have a vision that the screenings would become such a part of our culture and
that each and every family, regardless of economic status would know about the screenings, bring
their kids, be supported and encouraged while leaning about available resources. Most importantly,
children in need of intervention would be identified early, before they started
school, when intervention has the most impact.”
During this 20th anniversary year, Healthy Beginnings has just reached a major
milestone – screening over 9,000 children, hosting nearly 300 screening clinics.
Healthy Beginning’s professional volunteer staff combined with donors and
media sponsors has helped us grow, but the need is still great. Although we
know that children are still being missed, and the job seems large, we continue
to improve our community and our future one child at a time. Community
support can change the life of a child.
Twenty years ago, community came together to forge a solution; with
continued community support, your support...this solution continues, a
child’s life is profoundly improved. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

A Bear-Hug Testimonial
I recently had the opportunity to meet Sarah and Jake – a family who has been attending Healthy Beginnings screenings
on an annual basis. Because of our screenings, Sarah not only received education and reassurance that Jake was growing
well, but she was also connected to resources to help along the way. Here’s her story in her own words:
STAMPS of APPROVAL
Written by Angela Saraceno
I stand in the hallway watching the doctors wheel my son off to surgery. His little hand waves goodbye and all at once anxious
tears begin to fall. While watching the raindrops fall outside Doernbecher’s waiting room, Jake’s short life replays in my mind.
He has experienced more health issues than I wish upon anyone. I remember staying up with him as a baby while his
metabolic disorder acted up and I can’t believe that his most recent string of ear infections has stripped him of his hearing . I
am so grateful that a Healthy Beginnings’ screening found a hearing concern. This inability to hear explained the many temper
tantrums, sleepless nights, and frustrations between Jake and me.
Just when I thought I could not sit another minute I heard the specialist, “Sarah, we were able to successfully place Jake’s ear
tubes and he is expected to regain 100% of his hearing. Jake is lucky that you were so diligent to follow up with his hearing
screenings and you found the issue when you did. If Jake would have gone one or two more years with the infections, the tubes
would not have been successful; great job, mom! A nurse will be out to get in you in a few minutes so you can see him.”
The next thing I know, nurses are flooding my mind with post-op information. Worry turns to gratitude when Jake awakes.
“Mom,” he says softly, “why is everything so loud? Can you turn it down?” Laughter fills the room and Jake quickly covers his
ears. Watching my son hear the world around him makes me think of the many people who make Healthy Beginnings’
screenings possible – they are true heroes.
“I don’t know where we would be without Healthy Beginnings’ screenings. I cannot tell you how much of a relief it is to know I
can spend an hour of my day having Jake evaluated by 12 different developmental and health volunteers. Nowhere else in our
community is there free, quality and detailed care for my child where I can receive quick answers and referrals for everything
going on with my son. Jake is thriving and that is largely in part to the work of Healthy Beginnings.” ~ Sarah, Jake’s mom
Healthy Beginnings’ services are supported by community members like you. If you’d like to make a donation to Healthy Beginnings,
