HELLO, WORLD! YEAR 5
STUDENT’S BOOK TAPESCRIPT (ZVUČNI ZAPIS UDŽBENIKA)
1 Learning Can Be Easy 1 I like to organise new words. Sometimes I draw mind maps, and I colour them in different colours. Sometimes I draw tables. I have different categories every time, for example: easy and difficult words, fruit and vegetables, etc. 2 I cut out small cards, a different colour for each unit. On one side of the card, I write a word in English. On the other side, I draw or stick a picture of the word, and sometimes I write the same word in Croatian. Then I use the cards to learn the words. I keep my cards in a small box. It’s my own dictionary! 3 My friends and I often study together. Sometimes, we make memory cards for new vocabulary. Or we play Hangman. If we don’t feel like playing, we just ask each other to translate new words, from one language into another and the other way around. Sometimes we ask our parents for help or we use a dictionary. 4 My parents kept vocabulary notebooks when they were at school. I think it’s a great idea! My vocabulary notebook is really simple. I write down the English word and then the same word in my own language. I only note words that are new to me. 2 Meet the Young Photographers 1 I’m George Walker. My nickname is Georgie. I’m 11. I live at number 10 New Street. That's in York. York is a city in the United Kingdom. I want to travel. I love football. 2 I’m Ella Smith. My nickname is Ellie. I’m 10. I live at number 65 River Road. That's in Auckland. Auckland is a city in New Zealand. I do experiments. I love science. 3 I’m Ryan Johnson. My nickname is R.J. I’m 11. I live at number 25 Washington Boulevard. That's in Chicago. Chicago is a city in the United States of America.

In this photo, he’s eating a watermelon with his best friend, Helen.

Dear George,
Alone again! Now let me tell you about my typical school day. The school day begins at 9
o’clock. We have a tea break in the morning. I usually have lunch at school, but sometimes I
bring it from home. I can eat it in our school canteen, but we can also go into the
playground. We finish at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
Technology and science are my favourite subjects. I would like to become an inventor one
day! I enjoy creating new things. I also love languages. I study French at school. And this year
I’ll start Maori. Chris, my stepdad, always says that knowing languages opens doors to the
world.
I have to go now. It’s dinner time, and my family is waiting for me.
Talk to you soon,
Ella

Chris wakes up at seven and makes breakfast for everyone. He drives off to work at quarter
past eight. It takes him almost 45 minutes to get to work. He then puts on his swimsuit and
takes tourists rafting to the underground cave. He spends most of his morning in the cave.
He doesn’t get much rest because rafting underground is hard. After his lunch break, Chris
doesn't go into the cave any more. He is on land and checks the rafting equipment. Chris
comes home at quarter to six. But his working day is not yet over. He still has to walk the
dog! In the evening, we play board or card games or watch TV together.
My mum, Tanya, gets up at seven, and we all have breakfast together. Mum works for
several magazines. Sometimes she has photo sessions outside. I love her photos. They are
the reason I like photography. But sometimes she doesn't go anywhere. She stays at home
and works in her home studio. She does some housework in the afternoon. Then she writes
her cooking blog. It’s very successful! She doesn’t make lunch because Matt and I have lunch
at school, and Chris eats at work. Later in the afternoon, Mum spends some time with Matt
and me. She sometimes helps us with homework. Then she makes dinner.

Ella: My favourite season is winter. During winter break, I always take a Māori class. I learn
the Māori language. We sing and dance. Matt and I sometimes do the haka together at
home. I have to say he’s better at it. I also learn how to make traditional Maori decorations
from wood.
2.10
Ella: It’s time for you to meet my second family. They have a sheep farm. I usually spend
every other weekend with them. My dad, Mark, picks me up on a Saturday morning and
takes me to the farm. Lots of my friends think life on the farm is boring, but it’s actually

never boring! I’ll tell you more later. I love going there, mostly because of Jenny, my half-
sister. But I never call her “half-sister”, just “sister”. Jenny and I always have so much fun! I
miss her when I don’t see her. My stepmum, Rose, is also very cool. And she makes the best
Pavlova in the world!
2.11
Ella: On the farm, everyone wakes up early. We usually have a big breakfast because you
need a lot of energy for the day. Life on the farm is not easy. There is always something to
do. You have to work in the fields, feed the animals and clean after them. Dad and Michelle
have almost no free time before evening. Jenny and I help to feed the animals in the
morning. Later we help with lunch. But afternoons are just ours! We often visit a local horse
farm and ride horses. They are such beautiful animals! In the season, I sometimes help Dad
with the sheep-shearing. I don’t like it that much, to be honest. We almost never go out in
the evening, except for the big spring dance. We stay at home, talk and play games. Life on
the farm is rarely exciting, but I love being on the farm with my second family, and I always
want to come back the moment I leave.
2.12
Ella: In our house everybody has their responsibilities when doing housework. Every day,
Mum goes to the market and makes dinner. At weekends, she does the shopping and the
laundry. Chris walks and feeds the dog in the evening. After dinner, he does the dishes. Chris
also cooks and mops the floors at weekends. Matt and I make our beds in the morning and
help in the kitchen in the evening. Matt sets the table, and I clear it. I also help Mum make
dinner. At weekends, Matt and I clean our rooms. He hoovers the carpets round the house,
and when I’m home I water the plants. Don’t think that’s an easy task! There are lots of
plants in our house!

Ryan: How about a tour around the neighbourhood?
Emily: Sure. Let’s go.
Ryan: Do you remember my best friend Jordan?
Emily: Yeah.
Ryan: He lives close to here. I’ll show you.
Emily: Does he still play baseball?

Ryan: Yes, he does. He’s very good at it.
Emily: Do you still practice in his backyard?
Ryan: Yes, we do.
2
Ryan: Let me now show you my favourite place in the city.
Emily: Is it your school?
Ryan: No... It’s the skate park. Do you skateboard?
Emily: No, I don’t.
Ryan: Here we are. I ride my skateboard here every day.
3
Ryan: Can you see that big office building over there?
Emily: Yeah.
Ryan: My dad works there.
Emily: It’s not that far. Does he take a bus to work?
Ryan: Sometimes. But he usually rides a bike.
Emily: Cool.
4
Emily: Does your mum work far from your home?
Ryan: No, she also works pretty close. She’s a doctor at our new health centre. It’s two bus
stops from here.
Emily: A doctor! Does she worry about your health all the time?
Ryan: No, she’s actually pretty cool about that.
5
Ryan: So, how do you like my neighbourhood?
Emily: It’s great. The skate park is awesome.
Ryan: Do you want to see anything else?
Emily: Actually, I’m really thirsty. Is there a store near here where I can get some water?
Ryan: Sure. There’s a store right across the street.
Emily: Great. Let’s go!
3.3
Ryan: My school starts at 9 am so I usually get up at 8. First, I have breakfast and then I get
ready for school. My school is two bus stations away from my house, so it’s too far to walk.
That’s why I usually go to school by bus. The bus leaves at 8.40 but I have to be at the station
at 8.35. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes. Sometimes when it’s warm and sunny I go to
school by bike. On the way to school I pass by the skate park, the post office and my dad’s
office. It’s a boring journey but at least I have fun with my friends on the bus.
3.4
Ryan: Like many Americans, my family lives in a two-storey house. On the first floor, there is
a kitchen, a dining room, a huge living room, and a toilet. Living room is the heart of our
home. There are three large bedrooms on the second floor and two bathrooms. One
bedroom is mine, one is my parents’ and one is for our guests. There is a small front yard

with a garage. There is also a big back yard. We have barbecues there when the weather is
nice.

Ryan:
1 This thing is my favourite! I use it when I don’t have to study for school. It’s next to the TV,
on the chest of drawers.
2 I sit on them. There are two. They are usually in the middle of the room, but you can move
them around and sit any place you want.
3 It’s on the wall above my bed. It shows my favourite TV show.
4 I don’t use this for playing games only. I use it for studying, too. It’s on my desk. It’s silver
and thin.
5 It’s on the wall above my desk. There are some post-its and photos on it.
6 There are two of them in my room. One is on the nightstand next to my bed. The other one
is on my desk.
7 I keep my Lego blocks here. They are my favourite toys. It’s under my bed.
8 It’s on the wall opposite the window. It’s a present from my parents. It shows my
hometown.

Ryan: Let’s go! Look at those tacos over there. They’re my favourite savoury food. Dad: Tacos? Tacos aren’t healthy! Ryan: They can be healthy if you put a lot of vegetables in them. Dad: That’s true! Come on, I’m buying! Dad: Those tacos were so tasty! Ryan: The best I ever had! I feel like eating something sweet now. Dad: Let’s go look around. We’ll find something. Ryan: Hmmm, over there is a stand with crêpes. Let’s go. Dad: Definitely! You know crêpes with chocolate are my favourite sweet food. Ryan: I think I’ll have some crêpes with strawberry jam. Dad: Good choice! Are you buying this time? Ryan: Ummm, I think I’ve forgotten my wallet! Dad: Same old story… Don’t worry. I got the food tickets.

Narrator: Hot dogs are on the list of top 10 streets foods. There are many recipes for
preparing them. Chicagoans are proud of their Chicago-style hot dog. Hot dogs are usually
eaten with mayonnaise and ketchup, but not in Chicago! So, how do Chicagoans do it? Well,
first you need a bun and a frankfurter. Then spread some mustard on the frankfurter. Finally,
top it with these vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, onions and pickles. Bon appetite!

two leaflets. Which place do you like better? Talk about it first. Then we’ll have a vote.
Ian: This looks nice! What are these people doing?
Girl: I think they’re enjoying their walk. Look: some of them are taking photos.
Boy: What are they photographing?
Ian: Maybe the view, maybe birds. Look at this cute puffin! What is it eating?
Girl: It must be fish! Oh, they’re so lovely. I’d like to see one!
Boy: Look here, guys. Is this family having a picnic? We can have a picnic, too!
Girl: That’s a great idea!
Boy: And look here! Is this boy surfing? That would be exciting!

Everyone is in the television room. Mike Teavee is very excited. When he heard anything
could be sent to television, even people, he started running fast towards the big camera on
the other side of the room. He jumped towards it and pulled down the switch. There was a
strong flash of light and puff – silence. Mike Teavee was the first person to be sent by
television. Everyone in the room was shocked. Soon the picture of Mike Teavee started to
appear on TV. But he was pocket-sized. “He’s a midget!”, shouted his mother. She took tiny
Mike out of the screen and into her hands. “Please, bring him back to his normal size”, Mr
Teavee asked Mr Wonka. Mr Wonka knew how to solve the problem – with his special
machine for testing the stretchiness of the chewing gum. Mike went through the machine

So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks –
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two

Of having something good to read.

Mary: I love my mobile phone, so I usually write something like ‘I’m at the Cliffs of Moher.
Everything’s fine. We’re having a lot of fun!’ I don’t like calling people or sending postcards.
Pete: I like sending postcards because you can look at them after the trip and remember
things. They are more personal than texts and selfies. It’s a shame that people don’t send
them much any more.
Ben: I like taking pictures, so I usually just take a photo of myself and send it to my parents
or friends. It’s a quick way to tell them that I’m enjoying myself. A picture is worth a
thousand words, as they say.

Dear Mum and Dad,
Greetings from the Cliffs of Moher! It’s raining at the moment, but we’re having a great
time. The view from the cliffs is amazing! Right now, we’re looking at cute little puffins. They
are just as cute as in the photos! Still no sign of dolphins!
See you soon,
Ian

1 A rabbit is faster than a snail. 2 A tortoise lives longer than a mouse. 3 A bear is stronger than a goat. 4 A hippo is heavier than a wolf. 5 A blue whale is bigger than a shark. 6 A giraffe is taller than a zebra. 5.2 Kayla: The test wasn’t easy. What do you think, Tom? Tom: Yeah, it was quite difficult. I’m not sure about some answers in task 4. I know that an elephant is the biggest land animal, but which one is the fastest? Kayla: That one is easy. The cheetah is the fastest land animal. But I’m not sure which animal sleeps for the shortest time. Tom: I think that our science book says that giraffes sleep for only about thirty minutes a day. Kayla: Oh, no! I circled the rhino. I hope everything else is correct. Chimps are without doubt the smartest animals, but please, please tell me that mosquitoes are the deadliest! Tom: They are! Mosquitoes spread lots of diseases that kill people. I think we’ll get good grades. Kayla: Me too! I think I’ll get an A. Yay! 5.3 Animal Homes On top of a mountain, Or under the sea, There are so many places Where creatures may be! Alone in a desert, Or grouped on a farm, Or tucked in a tree trunk Away from all harm. On bright, sunny grasslands, Or in a dark cave, In jungles and forests, Where all must be brave. On ice in the Arctic, Or holed underground, There are so many places Where creatures are found! 5.4 1 There are lots of intelligent animals – for example, dolphins and goats – but chimpanzees are the most intelligent of all. On certain memory tests, chimps do even better than humans!

2 Sharks have a bad reputation, but they don’t attack and harm humans more than hippos. Hippos come in contact with humans more often, which makes them the deadliest large mammals. 3 It is impossible to say which animal is the most endangered one at this moment. The numbers change quickly. But what we know for sure is that there are over 5,000 critically endangered animals, such as northern white rhinos, amur leopards, tigers, Sumatran elephants and many more. 4 Snakes have a bad reputation, but the most venomous animal in the world isn’t one of them. It’s the box jellyfish. Its sting is so toxic that it will kill you if you don’t get help immediately. 5 It’s impossible to say which is a more popular pet: a dog or a cat. It depends on the country and the number of animals per family, and it changes over the years. What do you think? 5.5 54 156 430 359 205 1,000 5.6 Fifty-fifty 1 The sentence is true. Killer whales hunt in groups, and they are very intelligent. Almost all of their hunts are successful 2 The sentence is false. Eagles have much better eyesight. For example, they can see a rabbit from five kilometres away. 3 The sentence is true. Most people hate mosquitoes. Even scientists agree that life would be easier without them. 4 The sentence is false. Puffins live only in the northern hemisphere. 5 The sentence is false. Zebras are actually black with white stripes. Just like human fingerprints, every zebra is different. The choice is yours 6 The answer is b. The conditions are worst in deserts, because there is very little rain there and little water to drink. 7 The answer is c. A chameleon can change the colour of its skin to almost any colour. The colour depends on how it feels. 8 The answer is a. Female lions do most of the hunting. Male lions help when the prey is very big. 9 The answer is c. The tiger is the biggest wild cat. It is slightly bigger and heavier than a lion. 10 The answer is c. A giraffe can reach speeds of 55 kilometres per hour. Are you a science expert? 11 The answer is eight. All spiders have eight legs. Insects have six legs. 12 The answer is the weather. There is more sun and more rain in rainforests. 13 The answer is that they live on opposite poles. Polar bears live in the Arctic region, and penguins in the south, usually in Antarctica. 14 The answer is “hippopotamus”. People usually call them “hippos”, simply because it’s an easier word. 15 The answer is the mountains. They live in the mountains of central and northern Asia.

Grammar rocks 16 A crocodile is more dangerous than an elephant. 17 The mosquito is the deadliest animal. 18 Giraffes have the longest necks in the animal world. 19 A snail is slower than a sloth. 20 The Australian inland taipan is the most venomous snake. 5.7 Kayla: I’ve got so many photos, Dad! Serengeti is the most amazing place! Kayla’s dad: I love it, too. What did you like the most? Kayla: Hmm… I guess the animals. They are so big and strong! I can’t believe some of them are endangered. Kayla’s dad: I know. When animals attack people, we can see it all over the news. But most of the time they aren’t really dangerous to us. People are more dangerous than they are. Kayla: What do you mean? Kayla’s dad: Well, people eat lots of meat and fish. It’s OK if the animal is not endangered. But hunting endangered animals for meat is wrong. Mountain gorillas, for example. Hunters kill them for meat and trophies. They also catch baby gorillas and sell them as pets. Kayla: And some people hunt animals just for fun. Poaching is a big problem, isn’t it, Dad? Kayla’s dad: Of course. But people also endanger animals when they take parts of their habitat. We take their homes and build homes for ourselves. Kayla: And my science teacher says that their habitats change because of our actions. Pollution, for example. People make air, water and land dirty, and that can harm and kill animals. Kayla’s dad: That’s right. Also, contact with people is not always good for animals. Mountain gorillas and some other animals can catch human diseases and die of them. Kayla: How can we help these animals? Kayla’s dad: There are lots of people who try to help them, Kayla. For example, there is a list of endangered animal and plant species. It’s called the ‘Red List’. There are also lots of people and organisations that fight for animals every day. But it isn’t easy, and for some animals it’s too late. The western black rhino, for example. It died out in 2011. We have to do more to protect animals. GOODBYE FOR NOW
