SCHOOL LEADERSDear Parents and Caregivers,

This week, I have had the privilege of having lunch with 40 of our school student leaders, including 11 Prefects, 10 Student Executives and 20 House Captains and Vice Captains

All of these young people are outstanding representatives of Henley High School.

The Prefects are all year 12 students who have a honorary role in the school and are recognised for their contribution to Henley High School over the previous 4 years. The focus in year 12 must be on their studies. They are nominated by their peers and staff.

The Student Executive applied and went through a rigorous interview process in 2014. They have attended two Leadership programs in the past two days and will be the means of communication between the administration team, the student community and the parent community (Governing Council).

The House Captains and Vice Captains support the organisation of school events where points are allocated towards the house shield – Sports Day, debates, competitions at lunch time etc. They work with the sub school managers and are elected by their peers. These students are;

YEAR 9 GERMAN EXCURSION Henley High School year 9 German students attended a fun and interactive session called Projekt Autobahn, put on by the South Australian German Teachers Association, at Pulteney Grammar School. The session involved students engaging with other German learners from schools around Adelaide to learn about German language and culture, looking at things such as Germany’s inventions, food, music, and soccer. They participated in a competition against the other students, using their new knowledge to complete hands-on activities, and earn points, as they raced around Germany.

The Henley High School students did a great job in the competition and were excellent representatives of our school.

Henley High School would like to acknowledge and congratulate Design and Technology teacher, Simon Brooks for being awarded an ‘Award for Excellence’ for his contribution to Design and Technology teaching and leadership.

Design and Teachers Technology Association of South Australia (DATTA-SA) will award Simon with the award at the 2015 DATTA-SA Annual General Meeting.

The DATTA-SA acknowledges Simons’ achievements and contribution to the Learning Area of Design and Technology for the following: • Curriculum leadership in design

and technology • Developing and teaching a successful Stage 1 Advanced Technology course

• Shortlisted for the 2014 ‘Early STEM Teacher category’, Science Excellence Award

DATTA-SA recognises the importance of formally acknowledging the achievements of Design and Technology Teachers and Award recipients receiving this recognition with their peers.

Congratulations Simon!

STUDENTS REPORTSParents are reminded to please print off all your child’s past reports before they leave the school, as access to these will cease on leaving school. We also ask that you keep copies of the reports for future job applications, as Employers are now asking for reports to be produced when applying for employment. Copies of reports at the school may not always be easily accessed and delays in receiving them for the job application may cause problems.

COOKING IN THE SLC!The shopping and cooking program is an integral part of quality teaching in the Supported Learning Centre. It not only develops important independent life skills and interaction with the local community, but is also great fun for staff and students alike. The program is integrated into many assessment plans by staff including Maths, Health, Business and Enterprise, PLP and Research Project. It also allows SLC students to access the school’s state of the art Home Economics facilities. Bon Appetite!

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2015 On Thursday 19th February almost 500 students attended the State Aquatic Centre at Marion for our 2015 Swimming Carnival. Once again staff and students were impressed with the facilities, it is a buzz being in the marshalling areas used by Olympians past and present. This year the program was full, with four novelty events being run in between the more traditional events. Points were allocated to every swimmer in all events, and three shields were up for grabs: Middle School, Senior School and Overall. The atmosphere in the centre was excellent with the crowd in house colours cheering on the competitors. Excellent times and results were achieved by the swimmers. Competition was tight early but as the day went on, the stronger houses started to impose themselves on the results. In the end there was a clear winner.

The day was a great success and congratulations must go to the students who attended. The atmosphere was great, the competition standard high and enjoyment had by all. Thanks also must go to the staff who helped out on the day and assisted in the smooth running of the carnival. Attention now shifts to the A Grade Inter-School Carnival on March 4th where we take on the strongest Independent schools in the State and hope to repeat our fantastic result of last year where we fi nished 3rd in the State.

REFLECTIONS OF A HOMESTAY Being a homestay family is an enriching experience. You share the joy of seeing these young people gain confi dence in their use of the English language and develop new skills during their time at our schools. You develop long lasting friendships, learn about another cultures and share your culture with them.

We have had students from various countries for a few weeks through to a full school year. Together we have baked a cake, watched a movie, made sushi, gone shopping, sightseeing, holidaying, camping and a host of other experiences.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAYOn Monday February 23rd the entire Middle School cohort participated in Clean Up Australia Day. Students in years 8 and 9 took to the streets in the Henley Beach community to clean and conserve the local environment. Each sub school had a different area surrounding Henley High School to pick up litter during our PLP lesson. The fi ve sub schools then met at Henley Square. In total the year 8 and 9 students collected twenty seven garbage bags of litter. The individual sub schools were also competing for points towards the Middle School Shield. On the day the Florey Dragons were most successful, collecting 5 large bags, and 2 small bags of rubbish. The event also allowed students to gain citizenship credentials for their Personal Learning Plan. Rebecca Dostan of 9MI2 stated, “This was a good opportunity to give back to the community.”
