Dear H.I.L.A. Families,
We are creating a student newsletter during after school
so families will know what we are learning. We are
learning tips on what good readers do, how to pick out
good fit books, how to share books and computers, fun
online resources and so much more. Please see our
Topics outline to the right. We hope you have fun and
learn a lot from our newsletter too.
Sincerely,
Your friends from the after school program

Scholastic Book Fair The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to
the Hope Institute Learning Academy
Library on Friday October 22 through
Monday October 29. Students will get
two chances to visit the Book Fair
during their library lesson.
The Library is looking for parents and
families to volunteer their time to make
the Book Fair a success for the entire
school community!
Justina says, “the Book Fair has tons of books that we can buy and then take it home and keep it forever. If your book gets
torn up, you can bring it to Ms. Thurston and she can try to repair it. Justina would really like to buy the Barbie book if she can.

Birthday Book Program Begins!
The Birthday Book Program is a
great way for each family to celebrate the student's birthday while contributing to the School Library. Each child can select a book from the “Birthday List” during his or her birthday month to gift to the Library. A book plate, with a dedication in the student's name will be placed in the book. That student will be the first one to take the book home before it is placed in circulation. The program will begin in September and students with
July, August
and September birthdays can select
and donate their birthday book from the "Birthday List". Students with birthdays during the remaining months of the academic year will choose and gift their book during their birthday month. Students with birthdays in June and July will choose and gift their book in May so they can enjoy them before the school year ends. The Library requests that all Birthday Books gifted to the Library be new and hard cover. You and your
student may gift their birthday book any time throughout the year. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Thurston at [email protected].

Recommended Magazine: National Geographic
for Kids
Fayha says, “the magazine is funny, it has
nice information and colorful pictures. I
looked at the Halloween issue and my
favorite part was the article on Amazing
Animals because I liked the clothes and
jewelry and their hard work making the
costumes for the dogs and horse.”
Mariah looked at many different types of games
in the Games section on the National
Geographic Kids website.
Fayha looked at the Fun Stuff section on
National Geographic Kids website and enjoyed
the Cool Clicks. At Cool Clicks Fayha saw a lot
of fun pictures and read about book reviews, learned
jokes, found delicious kid friendly recipes, many more
activities.
Mariah watched a video on the National
Geographic Kids website. She watched the video
“Spooky Spider”. “I liked it because it was spooky
when they showed a lot of different spiders.”
The Kindness of Rangers (about 12 minutes long)
is another of many videos available. Mariah has
seen this video at home and really enjoyed it. She
says it’s a must watch.

Recommended Website: Ed Emberley at
www.EdEmberley.com
Ed Emberley’s birthday is in the month of
October so we thought we would visit
and review his website for the
newsletter. Ed Emberley is an author
and illustrator who has published many
books that teach children how to draw. The after
school students visited his website and learned how to draw
some interesting pictures. Please enjoy their hard work and
reviews!
Justina said Ed Emberley’s website is fun because you can learn all sorts of things about his stories.
Fayha said, “it’s cool because I like the scary skeleton that I am making from his website.”
Mariah liked learning how to draw a house just like Ed Emberley
Anna drew the front cover of Thanks Mom which she discovered on the website.

September October Labor Day: Monday 3 Sukkot: Monday 1 Rosh Hashanah: Monday 17 Columbus Day: Monday 8 Yom Kippur: Wednesday 26 Shemini Atzeret: Monday 8 Eid al-Adha: Thursday 25 Halloween: 31, 2012
Our plans to celebrate: Fayha says "for Halloween I get candy and make costumes, like zombie's mummies and monsters." This year Fayha would like to dress as a fairy or a zombie for Halloween. Justina says "I celebrate Halloween, Labor Day and Columbus Day. For Halloween I am going to be a Princess, the same as I was last year." Ms. Thurston celebrates Halloween too. She remembers as a kid, she dressed as a pink crayola crayon for five years in a row. "I loved being a pink crayon," says Ms. Thurston.
