PreParatiOnHiLZschoolsmakenodistinctionbetweencollegepreparationandcareer&technicaleducation;theprogramqualifiesallstudentsforcollegeandsuccessintheworldofworkimmediatelyupongraduation.Enrollmentisnon-selective,andthereisnotrackingatI-TECH.Thecurriculumisrigorous,providingthefoundationforentryandsuccessatcollegesanduniversitiesaswellasdirect-entryintotheworkforce.
PracticeHiLZschoolstudentsexperiencesomeoftheirbestlearningoutsidetheschoolwalls.Juniorscompleteasemester-longacademicintern-shipinalocalbusinessoragency.Seniorsdevelopsubstantialprojectsthatenablethemtolearnwhileworkingonproblemsofinterestandconcerninthecommunity.Earlier,in9thand10thgradeaswellasmiddleschool,studentsmay“shadow”anadultthroughaworkday,performcommunityserviceinagroupproject,orengagein“powerlunches”withoutsideadultsonissuesofinterest.
PerfOrmanceAssessmentisperformance-basedandallstudentsdevelopprojects,solveproblems,andpresentfindingstocommunitypanels.Allstudentsarerequiredtocompleteanacademicinternship,asubstantialseniorproject,andapersonaldigitalportfolio.

FurrHighSchoolopenedinFall1961andisnamedafterEbbertL.Furr,alongtimerancherwhoonceownedthelandwheretheschoolislocatedandthepropertycurrentlyknownasSongwoodHomessubdivision,whichisadjacenttoFurrHigh.Forty-twoyearslaterFurrisamagnetschoolwiththeextra-curricularofferingsofatraditionalhighschool.Toaddressstudentdropouts,theschoolsubmittedaproposalin2006tocreateRealizingEducationalAchievementintheCityofHouston(REACH)Charter.Theschoolwasdesignedtohelpdropoutsbetweentheagesof16and21returntoschoolandgraduate.REACHopenedinFall2006,andishousedontheFurrHighSchoolCampus.LocatedinthenortheastareaoftheHoustonISD,FurrsharesthreeofitsattendancezoneborderswithGalenaParkISD,SheldonISD,andNorthForestISD.
