very passionate to onate money to the new Stuent Center. As a commuter stuent in the80s, the Brennan Hall snack bar an lounge areas were my home away rom home. It wasa great place to meet with other stuents, stuy, eat an rest. I see this new Stuent Centeras the heart beat o activity or all members o the campus community.
Brennan Hall has become one o the core places or
students to gather on campus. The renovations to the sec-
ond oor transormed our science acilities and now the
creation o the Student Activity Center will complete the
building which is the heart o campus lie. I am excited
to see the impact this renovation will have on my peers.
Every student will beneft in some way.

Tere is a great responsibilityor the Holy Names Univer-sity Kodly Program. It is avery hard truth that all ourcompetence and idealism isworthless i we cannot pass
it on. We must pass it on to those who will needit most: teachers, so that they can teach childrenin the best way. Tis will ensure that thesechildren can develop into great human beings, indeed, human beings that later can make adierence between living in a harsh, violentand anatic world or living in a world ull obeauty, riendship and mutual respect.

I came to the KodlyInstitute merely to better un-derstand how children learnto understand and perormmusic. I came away romHNU cherishing renewed
idealism about the place o music in humandevelopment, an idealism inspired by ZoltnKodlys words: Only the best is good enoughor a child.

Having studied neither musicnor education in college, onemight wonder how I came tospend these last 27 years in
music education. I think itwas the combination o joy, wonder and learning that
happened when I saw my daughter experiencea single Kodly class (during her 2-day Suzukiviolin workshop at Holy Names in the summer o1981). Kodlys belie that singing can best teachthe ear was clear to me rom that frst experience.

Troughout its visionaryleadership, the Holy Names
Kodly Program has alwayskept in sharp ocus the mostimportant discovery o allabout music: all children
are natural musicians who deserve the fnestpossible education in order to cultivate theirinborn musicality.

I started playing the pianoat age 6 and also sang inmany choirs; I was long-
ing to do more with musicbut elt ill-equipped. WhenI frst encountered the
program at Holy Names, it was like havingmy eyes opened; suddenly I understood clearlythings that had always been vague to me. Iwent home so excited, thinking I only I hadlearned music this way rom childhood, Iwould be a real musician now!
Fran SmithProessor o Music, Holy Names University
This year marks the 40th anniversary o
the ounding o the Kodly Center at Holy
Names University, the oldest center or
Kodly - based music education in North
America. The program was ounded in
1969 by Sr. Mary Alice Hein, a Holy Names
proessor whose encounter with Zoltn
Kodly in 1966 inspired a lielong devo-
tion to bringing his vision o education to
the American musical world.
A program, renowned the world over, or
its innovation is very dear to the hearts
o many alumni and aculty. Here is what
some o them had to say
