Introduction
Overview The 3rd Holcim Awards competition to promote sustainable construction
worldwide is open for entries from July 1, 2010 untilMarch 23, 2011 (14:00hrs GMT) at www.holcimawards.org.
The Holcim Awards is an initiative of the Holcim Foundation forSustainable Construction based in Switzerland. The competitionsaim to encourage and inspire a built environment that goes beyondconvention to address the challenges of sustainability. The HolcimAwards competitions are conducted in cooperation with: ETH Zurich -Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland; MIT - MassachusettsInstitute of Technology in Cambridge, USA; TJU - Tongji University inShanghai, China; UIA - Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City,Mexico; EAC - Ecole Suprieure dArchitecture de Casablanca, Morocco;USP - Universidad de So Paulo, Brazil; and Wits - University of theWitwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
English is the principal and legally binding language of the HolcimAwards competition. Competition entries may be submitted only inEnglish.
The prize money for the ve regional competitions and the global phasetotals USD 2 million.
All building projects are eligible to enter the competition if constructionor commercial production had not started before July 1, 2010.
The 3rd International Holcim Awards competition is held in two phases.The rst phase is the regional Holcim Awards competitions in 2010/11.The second phase, in which the regional Holcim Awards prize winnerscompete, is the global Holcim Awards competition in 2012.
In addition to construction projects at an advanced stage of design, theAwards competition seeks visions and ideas at a conceptual level.The Next Generation category is open to student projects createdwithin university programs at nal-year bachelor level or above (includingmasters and PhD). All project authors must be nal-year bachelor studentsor above for part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).
All authors must be at least 18 years of age on March 23, 2011.
Regions
The Holcim Awards competition is comprised of ve regional Holcim Awardscompetitions (in 2010/11) and the global Holcim Awards (in 2012). Theregional Holcim Awards are based on ve geographic areas: Europe, NorthAmerica, Latin America, Africa Middle East, and Asia Pacic. Entries in thecompetition are allocated to a region based on the location of the project.In the case of submissions for which a site has not been selected, Region isdened as the principal place of residence of the Main Author.

Prizes
The total prize money for each cycle of the regional and global HolcimAwards competitions is USD 2 million.
The prize money for each of thefve regional competitions is USD 300,000:Holcim Awards Gold USD 100,000; Holcim Awards Silver USD 50,000;Holcim Awards Bronze USD 25,000; at least 4 Acknowledgement prizesfrom a total budget of USD 75,000 per region.
On regional level, juries will also award three Next Generation prizes froma total budget of USD 50,000 per region: Holcim Awards Next Generation1st prize USD 25,000, Holcim Awards Next Generation 2nd prize USD 15,000,and Holcim Awards Next Generation 3rd prize USD 10,000.
Awards and prizes of the regional competition will be presented at Holcim
Awards ceremonies in each region from September to November 2011. Theprojects awarded Holcim Awards Gold, Holcim Awards Silver, or HolcimAwards Bronze in all regional competitions automatically qualify for theglobal Holcim Awards competition in 2012.
The total prize amount for theglobal competition is USD 500,000:Global Holcim Awards Gold USD 200,000; Global Holcim Awards Silver USD100,000; Global Holcim Awards Bronze USD 50,000.
The Holcim Innovation prize for up to three winners is allocated a totalbudget of USD 150,000. All prize-winning projects and visions from the ve
regional Holcim Awards competitions (Awards, Acknowledgements, andNext Generation prizes) are eligible to be considered for this prize.
All prizes of the global competition will be presented at dedicated HolcimAwards hand-over events from May 2012.
Prizes will be awarded to the person listed as Main Author on the entry formas the Holcim Foundations sole contact. In the case of a project submittedby more than one author, the Main Author must indicate how prize moneywill be distributed (in percentages) between the Main Author and all FurtherAuthors listed.
All prizes are subject to the positive outcome of a verication process tocheck project eligibility and compliance with local and international lawslawsand regulations..

Juries
After a centrally-performed technical pre-assessment, regional juries willevaluate and rank all entries. The juries consist of independent, renownedrepresentatives from science, business and society. The regional juriesare supported by the respective partner university and the global jury issupported by the Technical Competence Center of the Holcim Foundation(ETH Zurich, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tongji University).Please nd a list and proles of all members of the Holcim Awards juries at:www.holcimawards.org/jury

Evaluation criteria
The Holcim Awards recognize contributions to sustainable construction irrespective of scale in architecture, landscape and urban design, civiland mechanical engineering and other related disciplines. The design mustdemonstrate proof of sustainability according to the ve target issues forsustainable construction.The target issues are listed in this document (see Appendix pages 53-54),and described in detail at: www.holcimawards.org/target
Project eligibility
Holcim Awards (main) categoryThe project is ineligible for submission if its execution commences beforeJuly 1, 2010. Building and civil engineering works, and landscape, urban
design and infrastructure projects are deemed to have started constructionwhen the rst site preparation, excavation, and/or environmentalremediation takes place. Materials, products and construction technologiesare deemed to have started production once manufacturing for commercialreturns takes place.
Next Generation (student) categoryThe Next Generation category is open to student projects created withinuniversity programs at nal-year bachelor level or above (including mastersand PhD). All project authors must be nal-year bachelor students or abovefor part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).
Submissions in the Next Generation category use the same Online EntryForm as used for the Holcim Awards (main) category at:www.holcimawards.org/enter
Participation
Entries in the Holcim Awards (main) category may be submitted by theprojects design team which consists of the author(s) and all other personsresponsible for the project. Eligible for participation are private or publicpromoters/investors or architects/planners/engineers involved in the
project, providing that they hold the right of authorship or are participatingin agreement with the person(s) holding the right of authorship. Legalentities and design teams must name an authorized representative who willact as the responsible contact person (Main Author).Entries in the Next Generation category may only be submitted by theprojects design team, which consists of the author(s) and all other personsresponsible for the project who must all be nal-year bachelor studentsor above for part/all of the entry period (July 1, 2010 to March 23, 2011).The submission must be created within a university program at nal-yearbachelor level or above (including masters and PhD).
The statements made in the online Declaration of Authorship are consideredto be true and legally binding in compliance with all applicable lawsand regulations. Every author is required to individually clarify his or hereligibility for participation. The eligibility of the authors will be re-checkedbefore prizes are conferred.

All authors must be at least 18 years of age on March 23, 2011.
Impediments/conict of interestIneligible for participation are those who, due to their collaboration inthe preparation or running of the competition, might be in a favoredposition, able to inuence the jurys decision or have any other (maturedor unmatured) conict of interest. This concerns, in particular, all jurors,examiners and guests as well as their spouses, rst- and second-degreerelatives or in-laws and their permanent business or project partnersand the immediate superiors and collaborators of ineligible persons.Staff of Holcim Group companies, and staff of the partner and associateduniversities of the Holcim Foundation may only participate if they are notdirectly involved in the preparation or running of the competition.
Consent
By virtue of their participation in or by contribution to the competition, allparties including participants, jurors, examiners and guests declare theirconsent to the present conditions. By contributing to the competition,entrants agree to accept the decision of the respective jury as nal. There isno right of appeal and no participant shall have recourse to any national orinternational court of law.
Ownership and copyrightAlthough the right of authorship, including protection against the copyingof ideas, and the right to publication of the design remains with eachauthor, the latter explicitly grants the Holcim Foundation for SustainableConstruction the right to use the data, documents and les submitted intheir entirety or in part, internally or externally in every form and for anypurpose whatsoever in relation to the Holcim Awards competition.
Documentation
Submitted projects may be compiled by the Holcim Foundation forSustainable Construction for public access in electronic and/or printedformat, giving credit to the authors and their collaborators in compliancewith the authorship declaration.

Application procedure
Submission of entries is only possible via the Internet. No writtenapplications (hardcopy) will be accepted. There are no submission fees toenter the competition.
You submit your application in ve steps, each of which will be savedseparately. Information can be added to the steps in any order and saved forfurther updates.
An individual ID and Password will be assigned after the Authors name andEmail contact in Step 2 are completed. Your submission may be edited atany time until the close of entries on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 14:00 hrsGMT.
To resume working on your application, enter your ID and Password in Step 1to retrieve your submission. You do not need to re-enter previously uploadeddata except if you change the project group in Step 3 (see also page 32).
The nal stage of submitting an entry in the competition is the conrmationstage, which can be completed at any time until close of entries. The systemchecks that all mandatory elds have been completed and generates a PDFle, which contains all sections of your application in a single document. Allmandatory elds must be completed and all text length conditions met tonalize the submission. The application can be re-edited at any time untilthe close of entries on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 14:00 hrs GMT.
Your entry in the competition is submitted by clicking on Submit at theend of Step 6 (Conrmation). The Online Entry Form has been optimized for a resolution of 1024 by 768pixels and the following browsers work best: Internet Explorer for Windows from 7.0 Mozilla Firefox from 2.0 Opera from 9.0 Chrome Safari

Image upload
Image formatsImages must be in JPG, PNG, BMP or TIF format. AutoCad or PDF les arenot permitted. All images must use the RGB color set. Images in CMYK colorset will be rejected. Please convert images into RGB color set and checkresolution and accuracy of color rendering. If you are unable to convertimages, please contact the Helpdesk for assistance.
The images will be presented in landscape format in the proportion of 4:3.(That means at least: 800 by 600, 1024 by 768, 1280 by 960 or 1240 by 1065pixels.) Portrait format images may be used, but will not utilize the fullimage space available.
Image sizesFile sizes should be large enough to produce clear images in the applicationform (maximum 3 MB each). At the same time the size of the image lesinuences the size of the PDF le you will receive as conrmation of yourapplication.
Please ensure that standard characters (see list of standard characters onp. 17) are used for all entries and all image le names.

Log in failed
The most common problems with ID and/or Password include:1. Check all gures and letters of your ID and Password are entered correctly;especially use of letter O and number 0 (zero).2. You havent register yet. Please click on New Entry.3. You dont remember your ID or Password. Please complete section Lostyour ID/Password.4. You have started an application but havent conrmed Step 2. So, youhavent received an ID. Please contact the Helpdesk or start a new entry.5. You clicked on New Entry but nothing happened - please check yourbrowser settings if you have activated Javascript and allowed cookies.
Problems with proceeding to next step
Make sure that your browser settings allow cookies. Deactivated cookies

Image upload failed
Automatic logout during upload session or error message appears:1. Make sure that your image les are either in JPG, BMP, PNG or TIF formatand in RGB color set.
