I’ve always loved putting a book in someone’s hands. When I was a kid, I knew

that even kids who didn’t like to read would love From the Mixed-Up Files of

Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg. And later, when I was a bookseller,

it was such a huge pleasure to hand parents (and kids) Louis Sachar’s Holes. I

insist friends read this book (Kate Atkinson’s A God in Ruins) or that one (The

Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis) all the time.

Stories are a way for me to connect with people, to find community. It’s one

of the reasons I love Little Free Libraries so much. Each Little Free Library is a

place for people in a neighborhood to find not only stories, but one another.
