OCTOBER 3

Darker nights and shorter days – autumn is upon us and only 31 events throughout the

whole of October to choose from.

First up was the Ian Hodgson Mountain relay from Patterdale in the Lake District on 7th

October. Last year’s start and finish point in Patterdale was retained, so the race was once

more run in a clockwise direction. A few injuries and absences meant we could only field a

Mens Open team this year, but the team of Andy Hauser, Alistair Langron, Julian Rank, Andy

Shaw, Richard Anderson, Gavin Baxter, Bill Stewart and Tom Brunt ran very well in perfect

conditions to finish 14th overall from 65 teams, behind the perpetual winners, Borrowdale.

Sadly, the day was overshadowed by the death of Darren Holloway of Pennine Fell Runners,

who collapsed on Leg 4 and despite the attention of several runners and walkers, could not

be revived.

A week later on 14th October, 4 teams took part in the UKA British Fell and Hill Relay

Championships, hosted by Mercia Fell Runners in Church Stretton. Like last year, the weather

was perfect – calm, clear conditions making for great racing and fast times and it was

without doubt a superb event, with over 150 teams taking part. Our Mens Open team placed

45thoverall, the V50 team 49th overall (5th V50), the Ladies team 93rd overall (13th Ladies

team) and the V40 team 104th overall. Highlights of the day included Katie Walshaw finishing

25th overall and 1st lady on Leg 1, John Ewart and Andy Hauser finishing 32nd overall and 1st

V50 on Leg 2 and Julian Rank and Andy Shaw finishing 23rd overall and 1st V50 on Leg 3.

Thanks to all that took part, particularly those who stepped in at short notice after a couple

of late withdrawals – it was some achievement getting 24 runners out on the fells on one

day!

Fresh from the previous day’s WYXC at Wetherby, 14 juniors had a run-out at the Withins

Curly Wurly races on Sunday 21st, even though it wasn’t a counter in the junior

championships. Amongst the top performances on the day, Callum Durrans was 1st U10,

Eddie Hinchliffe was 1st U16 and Sophie Spencer was 1st GU16.

Congratulations to Helen Berry, who achieved an excellent 3rd place in this year’s English

Championships – bit like a fine wine, she gets better with age! Also, well done to Lucy

Needham, who finished 28th overall, whilst in the Mens Championship, Tom Brunt was a very

respectable 19th, with Andy Hauser 5th V55.

The final race in the senior championship is the Wadsworth Half Trog, hosted by Calder

Valley Fell Runners from Old Town near Hebden Bridge on November 10th – should be a

muddy end to this year’s championship, where final placings have still to be decided.

On the admin front, I have started the planning for next year’s Ian Roberts race, which

should be on Sunday 10th March, subject to obtaining the necessary permissions - so please

make a note in your diaries.

Finally, other results of note in the last month are as follows:

Langdale Horseshoe (13/10/12) – Tom Brunt, 3rd overall; Race You To The Summit

(20/10/12) – John Adair, 26th overall and 3rd V50 and Lisa Lacon, 29th overall and 1st lady;

Withins Skyline (21/10/12) – Lucy Needham, 94th overall and 2nd lady.

YVAA Cross Country Relay Championships

On Saturday 6th October Holmfirth Vets travelled to Graves Park, Sheffield to take

part in the YVAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Sheffield Running Club for

Northern Athletics. This was part of the increasingly popular Northern Cross Country

Relay Championships for junior and senior athletes. While not quite as warm as last

year we were lucky again to have warm, mostly sunny weather pleasant for both

runners and spectators. This is a great day’s competition with teams for juniors from

11 through to 70+ veterans.

Once again we struggled this year to get teams out in many of the age categories but

still managed 5 teams. In the men’s championships we entered three M40 teams but

were unable to field an M35, M50, M60 or M70 team. In the women’s

championships we managed two F35 teams (although one was incomplete on the

day) but could not raise an F45 or F55 team this year.

In the women’s race, seniors and veterans together,

went off first at 1.15pm and the Holmfirth teams were

led of by Jacqui Khoueiry (A team) and Helen Pettit, (B

team). Jacqui came in 3rd, in 13:50 behind Hallamshire

and Wakefield and Helen, an F45 running in an F35

team came in 5th, in 15:07. Lorraine Smith took over

from Jacqui and maintained 3rd place closing the gap on

Wakefield to just 3 seconds running 14:02. Kath

Farquhar took on the last leg and as ever ran an

excellent race finishing 3rd, in 13:56 so only 17 seconds

splitting are 3 runners and in fact they ran the 6th, 7th,

and 8th, fastest legs of the day in the F35 category. For the B team Jo Bailey-Taylor,

who has become one of our most enthusiastic team runners, took over from Helen

and ran an excellent 16:39 maintaining 5th place and beating her time from last year

by over a minute.

OCTOBER 5

With Nikki unable to make it, due to working nights over the weekend and no

replacement available we couldn’t complete the team but it was worth running an

incomplete team just to see Jo’s delight at her time!

The men’s race started at 2.15 and probably had the largest field experienced since

the championships started in 2010 with 59 teams starting the race. In the M40 – 49

category 12 teams competed and we had Dave Watson (A team), Geoff Hall (B team)

and Phil Hobbs (C team) on the first legs. Once again Dave showed how well he is

running in his age group by coming home 1st in the fastest time of the day, 11:17.

James Durrans, recently back from injury, took over from Dave and while battling

hard finishing in 12:53, dropped three places to 4th. Darren Hanson took over on the

last leg and ran a solid 12:46 holding onto

4th place but unable to catch the 3rd

placed runner but still a very creditable

result. For the B team Geoff, running his

first team event for the club in a number

of years, ran 13:09 to finish 9th and Phil

Hobbs ran14:03 to finish 11th for the C

team.

On the second legs Maz Khoueiry took

over from Geoff and maintained 9th place

in a time of 13:42 (just faster than

Jacqui!) and Chris Beadle took over from

Phil and picked up a place to finish 10th in

13:58. On the last legs Jonny Sykes ran

12:58 to pick up 2 places finishing 7th and

Rob Kersey, M60, ran 14:30 to finish 11th.

Dave running fastest M40 time of day

Many thanks to all those who took part and I hope you’ll all be back next year with

hopefully more age groups represented.

YVAA Multi-terrain GP Race 9, West Vale

This is a tough hilly course on tracks and woodland paths and saw only 5 Holmfirth

runners take part. This is probably our worst turnout ever so I shall have to try and

“crack the whip” next year to get a better attendance at this great series of races.

As usual those that ran acquitted themselves well with Lesley Ewart was 4th lady and

1st F55 and Rosemary Baker 12th and 4th F50. In the men’s race Bill Wade was 66th

and 1st M70, Paul Winn 69th M50 and Tim Cock 75th and 2nd M70.

Ironman World Championship Hawaii

The Ironman World Championship in

Hawaii is probably the best known

endurance event in the world, viewed by

many people as something to do to

prove themselves.

However, you cannot just enter the race,

you need to qualify and qualification is

known as 'The road to Kona'. My journey

started in 2008, and 7 Ironman races

later and many hours of hard effort, in

July I finally qualified for the race. Racing

Ironman UK in Bolton. As my family had

been there throughout my journey they

accompanied me half way round the

world for the big day, (wouldn't have

missed it for the world!!!!).

The race is the hardest Ironman race in the world and therefore fitting as the World

Championships. The sea swim had 3 foot swells, the bike section had no shelter from

the sun or the trade winds and the run was both hot and lonely.

I usually finish the swim section within

the top 100 competitors, so when I

finished after a strong swim and saw

that 3/4 of the athletes were already on

their bikes, I realised just how good the

best athletes in the World actually

were. I finished 2/3rds through the

field, which is where I belonged, but at

the finish line I felt like I had won. I have

raced many events, but none so well

organised thanks to the entire local

community getting involved in the

event. My 3 word summary of the day

'Brutal But Brilliant', and shows that

some dreams do come true. At last I

have the one finisher T-shirt that

surpasses all others!

Sharky’s 2012 Season! Mark Buckingham has completed his second season as an Elite Triathlete, which started in February when he travelled to Brazil to represent GB in a Super Sprint competition, finishing 2nd, 3rd and 2nd, clinching 2nd place overall. He returned to his training base in Loughborough for a week before returning to South America where he finished 9th in Lima, Peru (Olympic distance). The following week he raced in Salinas, Ecuador where he took 2nd place in a Premium Pan American Cup triathlon. In March he successfully defended his British Elite Duathlon title at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough. April Mark travelled to Morocco to contest the Larache Sprint Triathlon, but was disappointed to finish in 26th place. The following week he donned his club vest to support his teammates in the National 12 stage road relays in Sutton Park, running the 6th fastest time for a short leg. His good early season performances resulted in selection to represent Great Britain at the European Triathlon Championships in Eilat, Israel, finishing a respectable 15th place. He completed a busy race schedule in April with four races in consecutive weeks. May was a busy block of training, but he did manage to take part in the British Elite Aquathlon Championships in Tamworth, where he surprised a few people emerging from the water in 2nd place and then went on to win the title in convincing fashion with an impressive run. June began with the first race of the British Super Series at Blenheim Palace. Alistair Brownlee who along with brother Jonny dominated the race; Mark finished an excellent 3rd, his first Super Series podium culminating in an all Yorkshire line-up. The following week Mark travelled to Banyoles in Spain for a World Cup race, where he continued his excellent form finishing just outside the medals in 4th place. This was the best performance by a British athlete other than the Brownlee Brothers, which contributed to securing his lottery funding in 2013. Six days later Mark took part in his first World Series race in Kitzbuehel, Austria, where he finished a disappointing 36th place after a tough swim, which resulted in an even harder bike ride with nobody to share the workload. Five days later he planned to race the Canary Wharf Super Sprint Triathlon, but withdrew after the swim with a viral infection.

Against his better judgement he then travelled to Edmonton, Canada, where he experimented with a change to his swim stroke, which proved unsuccessful and finished a frustrating 21st place. Sharky then had a break in August for the Olympics to see his teammates and particularly his girlfriend Lucy Hall in the Hyde Park Triathlons. This was a once in a lifetime experience and he had a super break, watching some of his former GB athletics teammates represent Great Britain in London. His first race after the Olympics was a world cup race in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Again his change in swim stroke had a detrimental effect on his performance and he was frustrated with 17th place. As the British Elite Duathlon Champion he was selected to contest the World Duathlon Championships in Nancy, France. After the swim he had to join the chasing group and as a result finished 11th in the individual race, The Mixed Team relay saw Mark with three GB teammates take 4th place. Mark’s main goal for 2012 was to qualify for the World Series Grand Final in Auckland, New Zealand. His performances in

Spain and Israel probably clinched his place and in October he travelled first to Adelaide, Australia to be a guest at Michael Quinn’s wedding, himself a former Holmfirth Harrier. He travelled to Hamilton, New Zealand a few days later joining the GB team for a camp prior to the Championships. Training went very well, but two days before the he became unwell. The doctor passed him fit to race on the day and although the swim went well, he felt dreadful throughout the race and was disappointed but relieved to finish in 29th. He was admitted to A&E and spent the day in hospital, having antibiotics through an intravenous drip to treat a kidney infection. Two days later he was well enough to travel to Los Angeles in California where he spent a week on holiday before returning to the UK. After a break he will resume his training and start planning his 2013 campaign.

Chester Marathon 7 October 2012

Four Holmfirth Harriers travelled to Chester to take part in the MBNA Marathon. The conditions were good for running and at 09:00hrs the runners were on the starters orders. The race starts at Chester Racecourse and after winding round the historical city for two miles it then travels South, briefly entering Wales before returning to the Racecourse for the finish. First back for Holmfirth was Margaret Sykes who continued her impressive form by knocking 15 minutes off her PB to finish 120th (6th Lady and 3rd FV40) in 3.06.25. Next home were Paul Crowther and John Robinson who were battling with each other all the way round the 26.2 mile course with Paul just easing away to finish 424th in 3.29.26 followed by John in 438th with a time of 3.29.59. The final athlete was Brandon Holroyd who, after a strong first half, found the latter stages of the race tough going to finish 832nd in a time of 3.51.01. Individual results: Margaret Sykes [122, 3rd FV40] 3:06:25, Paul Crowther [426] 03:29:26, John Robinson [440] 3:29:59, Brandon Holroyd [835] 3:51:01. ERRA National Road Relays 13th October 2012

Report by Helen Berry

Clumber Park hosted this year’s English Road Relays following a last minute change of venue from Birmingham’s Sutton Park due to an E-Coli outbreak. For a time the event was thought to be cancelled altogether and it was evident by the depleted number of complete teams taking part that many clubs could not respond to the last minute changes. Holmfirth Harriers managed a team in each of the men’s 6-stage and women’s 4-stage and those that travelled to Nottinghamshire were rewarded with perfect conditions and a good course. The women were first off with a 3.5km leg, slightly shorter and therefore faster than usual. Claire Leaver (Right) made a good start finishing 33rd in 13:15. Jacqui Khouiery picked up 7 places, clocking a time of 13:43.

ROAD

OCTOBER 9

Lorraine Smith, in one of her first road relays for the club, had a strong run moving the team up 2 places to 25th in 13:50 and with Lucy Verrill taking on the anchor leg in a time of 14:58 the team finished 29th in 55:46 out of 37 complete teams. 49 teams had started out on the first leg and the title went to Aldershot, Farnham & District in 46:29, with their final leg runner, Emelia Gorecka recording the fastest leg of the day in 11:05. The men’s team covered a 5km course, again over 2 laps with each one slightly longer than the women’s lap. Holmfirth’s men had qualified at the Northern Road Relays event a few weeks previously, though the team was made up of different athletes for the National event. Richard Smith got the team off to a good start in 41st (16:05). Thomas Traviss-Pollard (left) took on leg 2 and having recently joined the senior rankings, had an excellent run in 15:57 moving the team up to 36th position. James Little also kept Holmfirth in the top 40 teams clocking a time of 17:09, handing over to Maz Khoueiry in 39th. Maz clocked 19:57 and dropped a few places to finish 52nd and Alistair Langron (17:08) and Jon Burdon (19:23) both held on to 51st position with an overall time of 1:45:39. The men’s race was also won by Newham & Essex Beagles in 1:30:36 with the fastest leg being recorded by Jonny Mellor of Liverpool in 14:23. Individual results: Richard Smith [41] 16:05, T Travis-Pollard [36] 15:57, James Little [39] 17:09, Marwan Khoueiry [52] 19:57, Alistair Langron [51] 17:08, Jonathan Burdon [51] 19:23 55:46 - Claire Leaver [33]13:15, Jacqui Khoueiry [27]13:43, Lorraine Smith [25]13:50, Lucy Verrill [29]14:58 Results: Men http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2012/nat612.htm, Women: http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2012/nat412.htm

Bridlington Half Marathon 21 October 2012

In Bridlington we had just two runners out, quite a contrast to last year when we had 13 taking part. Lorraine Smith was not in the best of health nursing a cold but still put in a great performance to finish 112th in 1:33:51 (5th FV40) ; Rosemary Baker followed in 1:43:26 (4th FV50) Results: http://www.bridlingtonrr.co.uk/bridhalf2012.pdf

TCS Amsterdam Marathon 21st October 2012

Matthew Rose

Matthew Rose and John Field headed to Amsterdam to take part in their first overseas marathon. For John, this was also his first marathon and what a fantastic weekend we

had! Both Matthew and John did what was necessary in training to get around despite having suffered injuries which limited their ability to train and be on ‘top’ form; nevertheless they were determined to give it their all. The weather was reasonably

kind, a little cold at the start, quite windy and a constant threat of rain which didn’t materialise. On a flat course, the only reason to complain would be the drinks stations.. paper cups and dozens of runners sweeping across the road meant things became a little congested, especially for the first few stations until the field became spread. The race started and finished at the Olympic Stadium which was a great setting and there was a great buzz amongst the athletes. Matthew and John ran similar races, evenly paced until the latter miles. Matthew completed the marathon in 3:32:00 – only 27 seconds behind a Marathon PB set in London 2012 and given the limited training, water station chaos and extra distance of 26.51 miles - a great confidence boost for the future as he aspires to compete in the World Majors! John completed in 3:50:15; a fantastic debut performance and again a great foundation for the future - his next marathon being London 2013. Hello I hope you can help me.

Yesterday I ran Amsterdam

runners (1 was called Matthew

rose and I can't remember the

other).

I hit the wall bad! And the other

runner (who's name I have

forgotten) really helped me and

if some how you could say thank

you to him I would really

appreciate it.

Many thanks, Joanna Chung

Club 15 Report by Simon Edwards On Sunday the final club road race of the the year the Club 15 took place. Following the sad cancellation of the Holmfirth 15 to the wider running community. The race was brought together at short notice by Matthew Rose, John Ewart and a dedicated team of volunteers and helpers to pull

together an event for Harriers and invited guests. In typical autumnal conditions 12 Harriers and 2 guests took to the start line to complete 2 and a bit laps of the Neiley - Holmfirth - New Mill Loop. Richard Anderson and Jake Rowlands took out the first lap with Mark Summerville (guest) in close pursuit, By the six mile marker all runners had passed through in 50 minutes a good standard for a long race. As the miles passed and the rain set in, the field became more stretched out and Jake Rowlands and Dave Shepherd withdrew from the course. This left the path clear for Richard Anderson to step up and run a negative split for the 2nd lap and come home in a time of 1:31:17, 2nd place went to Mark Summerville in an even paced 1:35:42 with Darren Hanson finishing strongly in 1:44:43. In the ladies race the honours fell to Helen Standing who ran well in conjunction with Lorraine Smith to arrive home in 1:51:10. Finally in the Handicap race Lucy Verrill followed up her 2nd place in the Club 5 to win this year’s handicap in an adjusted time of 1:23:01. 2nd Place Rich McLeod in 1:28:47 and in 3rd

Sean Doyle with his all out from the startline effort in 1:29:28 A massive thank you to everybody involved in the race and hopefully 2013 will bring better numbers for this staple race in the club calendar. Individual results: Richard Anderson [1] 01:31:17; Mark Summerville [2] 01:35:42; Darren Hanson [3] 01:44:43; Brandon Holroyd [4] 01:47:07; John Philpot t[5] 01:50:59; Helen Standing [6] 01:51:10; Lorraine Smith [7] 01:51:10; Lucy Verril [8] 01:54:01; Richard McLeod [9] 01:58:47; Sean Dolye [10] 02:01:28; Katrin Kuusk [11] 02:17:20; Charlie Pierre [12] 02:17:36
