1 Overview
Hong Kong stands out as an extremely well developed baby food market in per capita terms, with consumption of XXXX kg per baby in 2014. The downward pressure from a declining birth rate over the period was outweighed by the huge demand from China, which lifted overall consumption to XXXX tonnes. The largest gain was in the baby milk sector, where 2014 sales value was nearly five times the 2008 level, almost entirely attributable to the parallel trade in infant formula by mainland parents, with volume more than
tripling.

2 Baby Milk
Total consumption of milks stood at XXXX tonnes in 2014, up 263% on 2008. Over the same period, the market value increased by over 385% to reach HK$ XXXX million (US$ XXXX million), and the value rose by 243% in real terms. The huge demand from mainland China was the main factor in this growth in the infant milk formula market. It countered the effect of low crude birth rates, as well as the rising prevalence of
breastfeeding.

2.1 Per Capita Trends
In 2014, overall per capita consumption of baby milks reached XXXX kg, up from XXXX kg in 2008, representing a 212% increase. Per capita expenditure was recorded at HK$ XXXX (US$ XXXX) in 2014, an increase of 317% over the previous six years. The rise was the result of the huge demand from Chinese parents who purchase milks in Hong Kong as they do not trust infant formulae in China after the melamine scandal in 2008.

2.2 Sector Segmentation
The market for third-stage (growing-up) milks is well developed in Hong Kong, and in 2014, the proportion of milk sales accounted for by third-stage formulae stood at almost half the market by value, and slightly more than half by volume. This segment is continuing to increase its share, although this slowed slightly in 2014 as a result both of the lower birth rate in 2013, meaning that there were fewer babies aged 1+ in 2014, and the increase in the number of births in 2014, increasing demand for formula for younger babies.
