The Board has entered into a Consulting
Services Agreement with McMahon Group, St. Louis, MO to prepare a Membership Development Plan for Hop
Meadow. McMahon has been working with private clubs for over twenty five years and they are the top rated firm in this industry. Frank Vain, President conducted a day-long session with our Board ten years ago during Bob Griffin’s term as President.
McMahon’s role in this process will be to complete an objective review of the current situation and identify the action steps that will fit the culture of the club while increasing the number of new members we enroll in the coming years. The changes in the lifestyles of the “up and coming” generation of prospective members and the increased availability of quality recreational and social outlets are secular changes that will impact membership demand even as the economy turns around. Membership development must become part of a well-organized process; one led by a marketing-oriented body that includes experienced professional staff and proactive volunteer leadership.
Frank will conduct a day-long work session with our Board members to enhance the club’s approach to new member development and identify ways to communicate this plan to existing members and the club’s marketplace. This will include the current situation, reviewing and discussing membership and marketing options while identifying solutions.
The working session will be tightly focused on various aspects of membership, including but not limited to; attracting new members, retaining current members, membership categories and pricing. McMahon Group has the experience, industry data and leadership capabilities to assist Hop Meadow improve our approach to new member development while staying true to its culture and traditions.
Building our membership back to earlier levels is our first and foremost priority and is critical to our success in the years ahead.
Bill Heidel, President

Congratulations and thank you for a successful Spring Membership
Campaign. We have a nice group of new members enjoying Hop Meadow and an encouragingly varied list of sponsors. The new members benefited from a 50% re-duced initiation fee and a period of free dues depending on when they joined, while their sponsors received credits up to $1,000.
I am pleased to announce the Fall Promotion, running from September 1st -October 31st. This limited time promotion is designed to encourage those still considering “The Hop” but sitting on the fence to join now, enjoy the Club during a beautiful time of year, and lock in savings. The initiation fee is discounted by 25% and two months of Dues/Assessments are waived. For sponsoring members, the same rewards are in place and we have added five (5) additional $1,000 credits for sponsoring a Full Golf Membership.
On November 1st we will close the promotion and revert to full published rates while we consider new membership options for the spring, including a higher initiation fee. While I don’t yet know exactly what we will do in the spring, I am confident that the promotion being offered now will compare favorably – and your friends should join now.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan Baughman, Jackie Morr, or myself. We are happy to talk to you or your prospective candidates for membership. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,
Peter M. Black, Membership Chair

The dry weather this year has made for some long
drives and fast putts. Our course generally fairs well under these conditions so long as we have an adequate water supply. The state of Connecticut regulates our wa-ter to 305,000 gallons per day and we are not allowed to average our daily usage. On the 90 degree plus days we really cannot meet
the grass’s water needs and to meet the state’s regulations we must cut back on the nightly fairway watering times. When this happens, to keep the fairways as healthy as possible and stay under the 305,000 gallons per day limit, we lightly water the grass (what we call syringing) during the hottest part of the day. These three minute syringes, (one rotation of the sprinklers), keep the grass cool and from drying out. With this type of wa-tering, you may see a few brown areas but for the most part we can keep the grass alive.
Generally our roughs are not irrigated. In the roughs where the grass has “browned out”, the grass has essentially gone “dor-mant” meaning it has shut down. It will not break dormancy and start to grow again until it receives adequate moisture. In a perfect world, when the grass is dormant (or brown) it is best to stay off of it and during these droughty times we will limit the rough mowing to one or two passes around the main playing areas. I tell the rough mowers that “brown and long” is better than “brown and out”.
Another factor in our summer time watering is that we often receive thunder storms which dump heavy rains on the course, in a short period of time, during very humid weather. This type of weather plays havoc with grass grown at lower heights. High (day and night time) temperatures heat up the soil, causing the roots to die back and the grass loses its ability to take up exces-sive moisture. This scenario sets the stage for turf disease infec-tions, which can kill a green over night. If not monitored and managed properly, even our best draining greens can get into trouble. After these heavy rains, the effect of the mid day sun at this time of year is like searing a steak, it will cook the outside but the inside stays (relatively) cool. To manage the grass at this point, we again use syringing to cool the grass during the day and we will limit our night time watering until the soil has dried out, cooled down and the roots start to grow deeper. We will also use a hose and “hand water” specific areas rather than use the sprinklers and cover areas that really do not need it. We are often managing our greens this way through most of July and August. By late August, the nights get shorter and cooler, and the grass starts to recover.
See you on the course.
Sincerely,
Erick B Holm, C.G.C.S.

So far we have had a very nice summer for golf; a little hot on some days, but given our past couple years of rain and thunderstorms, much better than the past few seasons.
We enjoy seeing you out on the course and hope to see you more as the season progresses.
July was Championship Month. We were able to crown champions in many different areas of the club. If you see these people around the club, please congratulate them on their accomplishments:
Men’s Club Champion – Ben Jessen, Runner Up – Mark AmorosoWGA Club Champion – Terri Forde, Runner Up – Jeanne GeraceMixed Club Champions Gross – Mark Murnane/Jackie CoghanMixed Club Champions net – Rich Forde/Carole MargolisJunior Club Champion 15-17 – Xavior MorinJunior Club Champion 13-14 – Sean OleaszJunior Club Champion 8-10 – James BosworthJunior Club Champion Under 6 – Russ BrownJunior Club Champion 8-10 Girls – Elizabeth Morin
We still have many events on our calendar and hope to see you out participating in the coming months.
RETAIL CORNERAs we have talked about most of this season, the rules regarding grooves and what manufacturer’s can and can’t do will be changing starting in 2011. The ability to get wedges with the maximum strength grooves will end after 2010. Players not competing in the highest levels of play will be allowed to use this technology until 2024. More importantly, it is important to get fit for these clubs. The proper bounce and design of the wedge to your swing is essential in helping produce the lowest scores. Wedges and putters are your scoring clubs. Schedule a time and get fit for these clubs. You will be happy you did.
The trend in today’s apparel market has gone away from natural “cotton” fibers and has transcended to man made “polyester” materials. These materials sometimes do not look as nice or have the same feel as the natural fibers, but provide a great benefit when temperatures get hot and players perspire. The man made fibers are designed to keep the body cool, hide perspiration, and breath a little better than the cotton counterparts. The man made materials have made great strides in the past few years. In the early stages, they provided the benefits but did not last and tended to retain odor. Companies have made big strides by treating fabrics with anti-microbial substances prior to production and the materials have been improved to last like a cotton shirt. They also don’t shrink when put in the dryer. If you haven’t tried one of these shirts in a while, the golf shop has a couple of nice options that also won’t break the wallet.
In the coming months, keep a look out for weekly and monthly specials through e-mail for special deals in your golf shop. As always, every day you receive a 20% discount on apparel and clubs which are listed as low as the manufacturer’s allow. Thank you for those who have supported the shop and we always welcome suggestions to improve.

Congratulations to Terri Forde and Ben Jessen for winning the women’s and men’s Club Championships. All spectators were treated to great golf and exciting matches.
Shooting low scores and winning matches requires making putts. When we miss short putts we rapidly lose confidence in our putting stroke so how do you recapture that lost confidence? How do you turn those negatives into positives? Well, it is done gradually through repeatedly increasing your sense of accomplishment. Think of the child you once were: As a kid you always thought anything is possible. It will help if you take as much pleasure in your putting as you do in launching your drives or striking crisp iron shots. Do not be afraid of putting! The green is the place where you need to be most relaxed and in control of your stroke. But if your self tack is negative, if you tell yourself over and over you have a tough putt, then it is inevitable you will tense up and your sense of touch will be the first thing to go. Keep a strong sense of faith in your stroke and your ability to make whatever putt you face. Most importantly, enjoy your putting…
Remember to sign up to play in this years Ken’s Cup. There are many open dates August through October.

Is it me, or is July over? I was fairly sure the season just started a couple hours ago, but here I am, just two hours shy of our LAST JUNIOR TEAM PRACTICE OF THE
SUMMER! I was told that time starts to fly after a certain age (which I have already reached) but this is getting ridiculous. Enough of my ranting. This isn’t why you good folks read the Hopline anyway.
The five busy weeks of the summer for Tennis, 6/28-7/30 have seen a steady stream of Junior clinics, women’s doubles clinics, private lessons and team matches. Our junior team deserves kudos as we have won our last 6 interclub matches by a pretty hefty margin. And having grown up in the media world of spin, I want to say we would have
won two of the matches we lost had our 4 strongest players been around at the time. And speaking of juniors, I want to give special recognition to our newest player to competitive Tennis -Emma Alfeld. Usually, ones first year of match play results in a significant number of second place finishes (code for losses-there goes that spin again), but Emma finished the season a bit over .500 in the won/lost department. Add to that a delightful attitude and willingness to learn, and you have a first year that deserves special mention. “Thanks Emma. I’m proud of you”.
Our men’s A team continues to impress me for the simple reason that our median age is in the mid fifties, and we tend to play teams whose median age is 20 to 25 years younger. And yet they fight like warriors. These are the guys I want in the foxhole with me should things go south. “As always men, my admiration to each of you”. I’ll sign off for now. Thanks for reading. I’d keep going but kids are waiting for me on court 4. Kids are like the ocean-you don’t want to turn your back on them for too long.

The Month of July was filled with many fun filled activities, family nights and good weather. What a beautiful July 4th weekend! Many families gathered around for poolside activities such as the children’s poolside parade to start off the day! Children and adults participated in relay races, water balloon toss, big splash competition and even took home their arts and craft creations.
The month continued with a Family Fun Night under yet another beautiful sky! A wonderful cookout, fun karaoke, contests, games and rafts were all available for a great time.
What a place to spend the days on the hot days of summer. The pool was filled with families looking to take a break from the heat and get some relaxation. July continued to be a busy month with swim team, lessons and even a few home meets. Our swim team was comprised of almost 40 children who have worked very hard. The swim team had six meets and competed against neighboring country clubs.
There is still time to arrange for private swim lessons so please call the pool office 860.658.7623 ext. 248. We are looking forward to Movie Night on August 13th and our final family fun night on August 18th. Steve Matyczyk, Pool Director

When little girls close their eyes they imagine themselves in a pretty white dress with their prince charming marching down the aisle. Girls imagine everything- the dress, the shoes, the prince, the flowers, the food, the place, the time! When they are very little girls they start to plan their wedding. I don’t mean pick the entrée and china pattern, I mean, envision the perfect day. That’s where I come in. We do not make the wedding fit Hop Meadow but Hop Meadow customizes to fit your wedding. We appreciate the dream and imagination of the bride and that they entrust us with their special day.
Thank you to all the members that have given Hop Meadow such a special opportunity and entrusted us with their special day. The Barton family brought their daughter Lauren’s wedding to Hop Meadow and we had the pleasure to host them this past June. Eric and Lauren Ducey have also joined Hop Meadow as new social members. We have included a couple of beautiful pictures from their special day with this article.
See you all at the next event and remember…just imagine.

Bon Appetite from Chef Ric
It’s Summer! Time for light meals, long evening walks and picnic lunches in the country. One of my favorite picnic foods is chicken salad. It is so versatile and with just a few ingredients it can transform into something really special. I prefer to to use the leftovers from a roast chicken, but poaching is a quick and easy alternative. This version was created in 1953 to celebrate the coronation celebration of Queen Elizabeth II on the second of June. Incidentally, the coronation ceremony happened more than a year after her ascension to the throne, it wasn’t considered proper to hold a joyous celebration like the coronation of a monarch while in official mourning for King George VI. The original recipe included roasting spices from all around the Empire including coriander, fenugreek, cumin, cinnamon, clove and fennel, and was a laborious process. Now, you can pick up a mild curry powder that almost instantly transforms a basic dish into one of delicious exotic complexity.
Coronation Chicken
1 lb roast/poached chicken1 celery stalk with leaves, finely diced4oz mandarin oranges, drained1 tsp mild curry powder (or more)½ cup mayonnaisesalt and pepper to taste
Break up the chicken into a medium sized mixing bowl, season lightly with salt and pepper. Add the celery, mayo and curry powder; mix until combined, then gently fold in the mandarins.
Let this set for at least an hour, but over night is better. Don’t worry if yours seems lighter than the one you’ve had at the Club, the color and flavor will deepen with time. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, or a touch more curry powder if desired.
Spread on your favorite bread with some green leaf lettuce and garden tomatoes, or tossed over a salad, the dish is a quick and easy way to beat the heat. Another way to beat the heat is to drop in to your air-conditioned Club for lunch, Wednesdays through Sundays from 11:30 to 2:30pm, you might even find Coronation Chicken on the menu!
Sincerely,Chef Ric
