Issue No. 3 Vol. 4Hot 100 2010
In January, the nominations start to roll in – via fax or email or in big, bulky envelopes sent the old-
fashioned way. First it’s a trickle, then a gush, and then we are knee-deep in candidates vying for a
spot in azTeen Magazine’s HOT 100 high school students, teachers, staffers, coaches, administrators,
parents and programs.
That’s when the hard part begins – separating the very worthy from the very, very super-worthy, and
then navigating the logistical nightmare of spell-checking names, shooting pics, preparing certificates
and summarizing accomplishments of the chosen hundred. It’s the hardest issue we do all year, but
in the end, also the most satisfying. Because no matter how much we enjoy exploring controversy,
introducing new bands and highlighting products and trends in our pages throughout the year, nothing
gives us more satisfaction than recognizing the human beings that make Valley
schools great in ways both obvious and subtle.
So, congratulations to our honorees, many thanks and best wishes
to our graduating staffers and happy summer to all of our readers.

Summer is Here!Summer is Here! Thanks to all the most inspiring coaches, students, administrators, faculty and staff members who have had a positive impact on
their Valley communities!
19 Hot 100 2010 Tempe Mkt Place.indd 1 4/20/10 1:15:55 PM
Well, some of the 100 teachers, coaches, administrators, staff-
ers, parents and standout students profiled on the following
pages have gotten some kudos regarding the contributions
they make to their respective high school communities.
Others, though, too often go unsung, quietly going about
the business of being awesome. We want to recognize both
groups who make up our smokin’-hot HOT 100 this year, se-
lected from more than 350 nominations and representing 39
schools. They are stellar examples of schools getting it right.

practical (how to choose the

A t Desert Ridge it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve come from; there is a place for everyone. The art rooms constantly blossom with new creators learning to employ their skills to the best of their ability.
The locker rooms smell of sweaty losses and victories as the teams bond in a common goal of winning. The band, choir and orchestra rooms overflow with the expression of many talented musicians all working hard for their aspirations. The stagelights beam upon the faces of the school’s young actors, who portray the inner emotions of each story. The English classrooms inspire many writers, while in the math and science rooms analytical thinkers are challenged. Even with these diverse groups, Desert Ridge ha a spirit of togetherness. There are the diehards who continue the tradition of the push-up board at all the football games, the Mr. Desert Ridge competition, the prestigious engineering program called “Project Lead the Way,” the ecology club saving the planet one recycling box at a time, the spirited game-playing assemblies and the yearly teacher dodgeball tournament: we are all tied together, tight-knit and proud Jaguars.
Living on theEdge Gilbert’s Desert Ridge builds
a name for itself in the faaaar Southeast Valley
Our school is geographically in far
east Mesa but we are part of the
Gilbert district..
Our original logo was nicknamed the
rat-cat due to its rodent like appear-
ance. Thanks to the permission of the
Jacksonville Jaguars, we now have a
sleek new logo.
Gilbert has banned soda sales on
campus as well as “fatty” foods like
French fries, but you can still buy a
Payday and sour worms (we haven’t
figured it out either).
Even though our school colors are red
and black, our architecture is purple
and green.
For the past four years, 3TV has come
to our school for football game days
for Good Morning Arizona.
We have a four-year engineering
program called “Project Lead the Way.”
We were 5A-2 state champions in
baseball last year.
did you know...?
CoMPILED By Dallas Doane '11, Eryn Peck '10, Brooke Stevens '10, Jenna Roper '13, Harley Brooks '12, Alexis
Pomeroy '10, Jessica Judd '11, Cotton Ward '10 Hot1002010 azTeenmagazine.com34
Mason Sanders “Desert Ridge has set up a strong foundation for all its programs, including sports, clubs and teaching. It has set a good reputation for itself compared to other schools.” – Mason Sanders, ‘11
“Desert Ridge has great teachers. A lot of students don’t notice how lucky we are to have teachers who are willing to sacrifice their time to help us better understand our work.” – Jordan Davisdon, ‘11
Haley Lanhart “Desert Ridge is a community fit for an insane asylum at times… And I couldn’t imagine a better high school ever.” – Haley Lanhart, ‘10
“Before I joined JRoTC, I was just holding down a chair
in class. But after three years of the program, I’ve gained a huge sense of responsibility, and my future is looking bright.” – Drake Bradley, ‘10
“Many organizations help create skills and abilities crucial to students, and no program at DRHS has helped me more than band. The lessons this program has taught me will carry on throughout my years.” – Keigan Wiles, ‘10
“Desert Ridge is filled with plenty of amazing after school activities. The best part is you can plat swing man throughout your high school career and do everything from dance teams to book clubs.”
–Emily Gaska, ‘10
“Desert Ridge isn’t perfect. No high school is, but Desert Ridge is my perfect high school. I will never forget what it’s taught me and how I’ve grown up in these halls. Even in my old age I will forever be a Jaguar.” – Brooke Stevens, ‘10
“I have the most random conversations with people I don’t even know. So maybe what I like most about Desert Ridge is that people here are just so whatever and nice.”
– Haley Taylor, ‘12
“There’s so many different kinds of people who make everyday interesting.” – Sydney Baugh, ‘12
“Desert Ridge is a pretty good school; it has a lot of cool teachers.” – Jessica Judd, ‘11
“Desert Ridge is really cool; I’m new this year and I really like it. one thing that can be improved is the passing periods; we need more time. My old school, Howard Gray, had seven minute passing periods. Here at Desert Ridge we only have five.” – Darrian Hernandez, ‘12
“Desert Ridge is a good school, but there aren’t enough chairs in the
cafeteria. I find that very annoying.” – Jacob Samson, ‘13
the sceneSonic
on Ellsworth and GuadalupE:Whether you’re looking for a lunch on a half-day, a snack
on the way to the big game, or a pick-me-up in the form of cherry limeade to get you through your homework anytime
is the right time for a trip to Sonic. It’s nothing short of a miracle that this delicious establishment is just a quick
drive down the road from Desert Ridge.
L.A. Fitness(1905 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa)
Staying fit is very important, and L.A. Fitness is the place Desert Ridge students prefer to work out. It is impossible
to hit the gym without seeing at least three past or present Jags pumping iron, There is also a Golden Spoon
conveniently located in the same parking lot, which provides for a great fat-free treat that hits the spot after a good
calorie burn. Another miracle.
In N’ Out(1859 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa):
Delicious burgers, fresh-cut fries, shakes with real ice cream and a $10-an-hour starting wage, what could be better? Not only is the local In N’ Out the perfect place for food anytime
of day (open until 1:30 a.m. for those late-night burger urges!), but it is also an excellent job for many Jaguars.
Fresh & Easy(2758 s. CriMson rd., MEsa):
It is said around D-Ridge that Fresh & Easy is so good that even the expired section is fresh. The granola is to die for,
the pita chips are wonderful and the gelato speaks for itself, but the cherry on top is that the one-stop healthy snack
shop is right across the street from school.
CVS(9950 E. GuadalupE rd., MEsa):
The drugstore across the street from school is just one place to pick up a drink to get you through your classes. Jaguar sports teams also like to head over between school and
games to grab a quick snack for a convenient energy boost.
Rockin’ R Ranch(6136 E. BasElinE rd., MEsa)
Rockin’ R Ranch is one of the best places to get your groove on and meet new people. It is one of the few underage
dance spots around and it’s outdoors so you get your honky-tonk fix.
Harkins(supErstition sprinGs):
Harkins is the number one place for a Jag to take in a movie. Their refillable popcorn buckets and $1 souvenir cups
make it a bargain.
Bahama BucksShaved ice is the perfect treat for a hot Arizona afternoon
and Bahama Bucks is the perfect place to get it. Tasty flavors and a great texture make it a treat to be craved.
Buffalo Wild Wings(6560 E. supErstition sprinGs Blvd., MEsa):
A great place to meet up with friends and play games while eating yummy wings. It’s rare to get dinner there and not see
a few Jags enjoying themselves. Wing night Thursday night brings discounted boneless wings in flavors ranging from
sweet to pretty hot to their infamous Blazin’ Hot.
Native New Yorker(1947 s. siGnal ButtE rd., MEsa):
Native New Yorker is Desert Ridge’s pizza/wing/sports spot. Located right next to an Imax theater, it is the perfect place
to indulge in great food before a movie. They also sponsor our award-winning marching band and treat them to a slice
of pizza and a soda for $1 after every home game.
here’s what I heardStudents tell it like it is
What’s it like to be a Jag?Students spill it
Are you named after Desert Ridge Mall?
“I thought there were only three high schools in
Gilbert. How long have you been there?”
“I went to a basketball game at your school and it was
like going to Globe. Does it take you like an hour to get to
downtown Phoenix?”
“Yeah, it takes about an hour, but who needs downtown Phoenix when we’ve got all we need in east Mesa?” – KLAy EREKSOn ‘11
“Desert Ridge Marketplace is a mall that’s, like, 20 miles away. And no, we are not named after it. What school would name itself after a mall?” – JORDAn DAvIDSOn ‘11
“Our school is about eight years old. We may be new, but we are fresh.” – JAKE SWAnSOn, ‘10

MORE THAN JUST A FOUR-YEAR EDUCATION
19 Hot 100 2010 GCU.indd 1 4/20/10 12:57:50 PM
“I changed this past year by learning not to become dis-
tracted with things and stay fo-cused on important issues, like
homework and studying for a test. Also, that I should enjoy
life and not be so uptight.”– Bianca armenta, Sunnyslope ‘10
“I don’t know so much about change, but I’ve learned that no matter how good-looking
a teacher is, he is off-limits.” –alexia carrasco, Tolleson ‘12
This year, I’ve really put myself out there in the world more yet still remained a really chill guy.” – Dan theoBalD, Arizona School for the Arts ‘12
“Since the beginning of sophomore year I’ve become more confident with myself and in my acting
– (agents should holla at me!) – I’m now not afraid to try new things or to say what’s on my mind.” – ian sauseDo, Westview ‘12
“The most important thing I’ve learned so far is being able totime manage in order to be successful with not only school, but other activities as well.”—Jenny van huissteDe, Desert Mountain ‘11
“I’ve realized what’s most important in my life and the things that should come first to me, like grades and family. I used to barely get by in school and not spend time with family, but this year has really opened my eyes.” – Karina hagen, Williams Field ‘13
“In this past year, I feel like I have really grown. I’ve gotten closer to my friends and I’m really starting to find myself.”
—sarah Peterson, Notre Dame ‘11
“I’ve learned to not
care so much about others’ opinions.
What I mainly care about now is having lots of fun.”
—Janine FaraJ, Horizon ‘10
“I haven’t changed, I’ve adapted. I can now stomach the school lunch, I’ve perfected procrastination, crowd-surfed over freshman, and I feel that with just one more year, I might even be able to finish my teacher’s sen-tences.” – Jimmy crawley,Chaparral ‘11
“This past year
has been a challenge just like every other year, but I feel like it has made me stronger, smarter and maybe even more mature.” — syDney tularasKa, Arcadia ‘11
“In the past year, I have changed so much. I feel like I have really grown
as a person this year. I’ve met some great people and I’m a lot happier.” —Devin slawsBy, Notre Dame ‘11
“I have gotten a lot better at procrastinating. I have learned that waiting until that last minute may be stressful, but it is still worth it.” —miKayla ZoBrist, Desert Mountain ‘11
Compiled by Last Word Editor Lindsey Halfhill
“I’ve learned to appreciate the present anddream about the
future. Because my high school life is coming to a quick end, I would suggest that all underclassmen learn
to enjoy high school while they can, because senior year
really does fly by. – vivian PaDilla, Arcadia ‘10

“In the past year I have definitely learned a lot about who my true friends are and about myself and my morals when they are put into different situations. It has made me realize what a good job my parents did by instilling these
“I’m trying new things that I wouldn’t do before because I was scared
I’d fail. I can go to school without makeup, and I’m not afraid to talk to
people like I used to be. I feel more comfortable with myself and
ready to go away for college.”– hillary Burgess, Gilbert ’10
“This school year, I’m a lot more focused on what I want to do in life and how I’m going to do it. I’ve grown as an individual, and
although I always knew what I wanted to do (public relations), I’ve looked more into it and have learned more about what I can do with it. This school year really prepared me for college because I used to be scared to leave, but now, I’m just so excited.”– Brittany harDy, North ’10
“Although I have always been super-involved in high school, this year I have really developed
my passion for Speech & Debate, StuGo and politics. I have
learned to really be myself, truly embrace my nerdy-ness,
and not care about what others think about me.” – yassamin ansari, Chaparral ‘10
“I’ve just come to realizethat the solution to everything is a smile.” – Donnella lincoln, Greenway ‘10
“I’ve changed the way I react to things that are out of my control. I’m more patient and willing to try anything new, but still firm in my morals.” – aneesa lytle, Moon Valley ‘10
values in me! The biggest change I have probably made is just becoming more comfortable with myself as a person and being able to show people who I really am.” – carly traxler, Desert Vista ‘11
