PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE
Hi everyone, And a Happy New Year to you all !
FORD VS FERRARI at the Arts Centre, Coota - what a good movie that is! ---Le Mans in 1966.
And yes, we do have more than one of each in our club.
Sunday 22 December - Quite a number of our members enjoyed the movie, followed by a meal at the Ex-Services
and Citizens club, then a run around the streets to view the Christmas lights. We were a bit late for the lights run route which Barry had planned, but between the 2 groups, we covered the
spectacle well.
Lin and I would like to say how much we enjoyed the get together in our shed on New Year’s Day, evening. The
weather was reasonably kinder after some very hot days, and we had a couple of air cons running, to assist the
group’s comfort levels. About 30 members said hello to 2020, in good company with festive food !
The next event, if the magazine reaches you in time, will be ‘Breakfast in the Park’ on Australia Day. Our club
is usually well represented here, with people showing a lot of interest in our vehicles.
Then it is on ! The 40th birthday celebrations weekend ! -- Friday 31st January.
Final numbers of people attending are 133 . All catering and tour arrangements have now been finalised. It has
been a great response from our locals and other clubs alike. The weekend commences on Friday 31st Jan. with a ‘‘meet and greet’’ at the Cootamundra Airport Terminal
building between 3pm and 6.30pm. Mainly for out of town visitors, but all are invited, in fact it would be good to
see many of us there, to give our visitors a warm welcome . And I look forward to seeing you all - over the weekend – and Sunday 2nd February at JUGIONG.
Looking ahead, just a reminder, to our club members - and other car clubs - receiving this magazine, our Coota
club is hosting this year’s ‘SOUTH WEST GET- TOGETHER’ on Saturday March 28th, also to be at the
Cootamundra Airport.
Numbers of people interested in attending, would be appreciated, to assist with the catering of lunch. Please
advise Secretary, John Collins, or President, Malcolm Chaplin. Thank you.
Yours with Grace, Space and formidable Pace, MAL

P.S. Back to Le Mans in 1966, when Ford finally beat the might of Ferrari.
I happened to be there with a friend, and we watched a good deal of the race. It is not easy to see it all because
of the size of the circuit. Bob and I positioned ourselves at the end of Mulsanne Straight, where cars braked from approximately 180mph
for the hard right hand corner. I remember at night, even in the pouring rain, brake discs were glowing red.
We didn’t see the actual finish, but we knew Fords had won.
I learnt a couple of things from the movie, which I wasn’t aware of at the time of the race. Firstly, I always
thought Ken Miles had won, being a lap ahead at the time. Secondly, I didn’t realise that Miles, like me, was a
Birmingham boy. His accent gave that away very clearly during the movie ( the actor playing his part, came from
Birmingham too - he was very well cast )
After the race, Bob and I made our way up to the finish area, where I distinctly remember one of the three 7 litre
GT 40s, was needing to be pushed into the parking area. It was so completely worn out it refused to start !
I can’t remember if it was Miles’ car, or one of the other blokes’ cars. Shades of Colin Chapman’s Lotus engineering principles ?
