Braces not only help improve the look of your teeth, but they can also help keep your teeth and gums healthy by maintaining proper alignment. This is important for avoiding issues like TMJ and gum disease. But you may have been avoiding getting braces because the thought of wearing those chunky metal braces on your teeth is unappealing.

Luckily, in many cases, Invisalign is a safer, less obtrusive option that can align your teeth and improve your smile quickly. But how exactly does Invisalign work differently than standard metal braces?

Invisalign – Clear with No Tightening

Metal braces are affixed to your teeth for the duration of the treatment. The wire that connects them is then tightened periodically until your teeth are aligned the proper way. These tightening appointments can be painful and inconvenient. Invisalign uses clear mouthpieces, one set that goes over your top teeth and another that goes over your bottom teeth. Every two weeks, you replace the sets with new ones that bring your teeth closer and closer to the desired alignment each time. This way you do not have to go to the tightening appointments. The progression is already taken care of by the differently aligned clear mouthpieces, and the old ones can just be thrown away. The length of time of this treatment can vary greatly, but on average you can expect to be finished in around 12 months.

Nothing Affixed to Your Teeth

The best part about Invisalign is that nothing is affixed to your teeth. When you brush your teeth, eat foods, or do other activities, you can remove them for a short period of time. This not only makes them much more convenient but it also ensures that you can brush and floss much more easily than when you have braces. And because they are clear and more easily concealed, you do not need to feel at all embarrassed around social situations, even up close.

Talk to your dentist

While Invisalign is extremely effective, it is not the right treatment for everyone. Before committing to the treatment, make sure that you see a quality dentist who can give you a proper referral for Invisalign or another treatment if they think it would work better for you. If you want a better smile without the hassle of metal braces, contact Serenity Dental today for an appointment.
