TheMulti-StateAlternateAssessment(MSAA)isMaine’sMEAAlternateMathematicsandEnglishlanguagearts/literacyassessment.Thisassessmentofferseducatorssummativedataabouttheacademicachievementandgrowthoftheirstudents.Thegoalofthishigh-qualityon-lineassessmentistoensurethatstudentswiththemostsignificantcognitivedisabilitiesachieveincreasinglyhigheracademicoutcomesandleavehighschoolreadyforpost-secondaryoptions.

Assessments Stateandfederallawsrequirethatallstudentsparticipateinassessmentsindesignatedcontentareasatdesignatedgrades.Inconjunctionwithlocalandteacher-developedassessments,theseassessmentscanhelpeducators,parents,andeducationalleaderstounderstandhowwellMaine'sschoolsareeducating,howwellMaine'sstudentsarelearning,andwhereadditionalsupportmaybeneeded.

Attendance Astudentisconsideredabsentifthatstudentispresentfor lessthan50%ofhisorherinstructionalday.Astudentiseitherconsideredabsentorpresentforanygivenday.Lessthanhalfiscountedaszero;halformorearecountedasone.Astudentisconsideredchronicallyabsentifastudentisabsent10%ormoreofthedaysenrolledandisenrolledforaminimumoftendays.Moststudentshaveaninstructionaldaythatisdefinedbytheschool’sdailyschedule,buttheremaybestudentsforwhomthisisnotthecase.Forexample,ahighschoolseniortakingonlytwoclassesmighthaveafullinstructionaldayof3hours.Thatstudentwouldbeabsentifpresentforfewerthan1.5hours.Schoolsmayalsohavespecificattendancepoliciesthataddressthecompletionofinstructionalactivitiesoff-campus(e.g.,distanceeducation,communityprojects).
