Camping Guidelines for Hunt's Pond

(1) From May 1s1 through September 30th , CAMPING ISALLOWED AT DESIGNATED SITES BY PERMIT ONLY!Free permits may be obtained from the NYS DECSherburne office above between the hours of 7am and3pm Monday through Friday. Applicant must be 18 years orolder, Permits mustbe signed by the applicant andproduced upon request by any Law EnforcementOfficer or Department employee.

(2) Arrival time on acampsite is after 1pm on the first campingdate of the permit. Departure time from the campsite isbefore 11 am on the last camping date of the permit.

(3) The maximum length of stay on anyone site orcombination of sites in 14 nights. Upon issuance of thepermit, the Department may limit the number ofconsecutive nights to less than 14. No more than 8people are allowed per campsite. Anew permit will notbe issued for the same address until an issued permitexpires.

(4) There is a limit of ~ vehicles per campsite. This includesmotor homes. Both plate numbers will be required on thepermit. The permit will not be issued without both licenseplate numbers.

(5) Motor vehicle access is not permitted beyond the gate nearthe boat launch. Campsites # 9-12 are "walk-in only" sites.

(6) The portable toilets must be kept clean and free of trash ordebris. Damage to these facilities will jeopardize the futureavailability of these campsites.

(7) A potable water source is not available at Hunt's Pond.(8) You are camping at your own risk. Do not leave your

belongings unattended. Children are not to be leftunattended. Dogs and other pets must be safely restrained.

(9) Quiet hours are 10pm to Tam. Day users must leave by1Opm.

(10) Fires are allowed only in fire pits provided by DEC. Onlydead and downed wood may be used for campfires. Noburning of scrap wood from construction or demolition isallowed. No fires are allowed on the boat launch site.

(11) Cutting, defacing or injuring in any manner any live trees,shrubs or plants is prohibited.

(12) Carry out all rubbish. Throwing glass, cans, aluminumfoil, food wastes and other rubbish into the fire pit isprohibited.

(13) Use of boats with gas powered motors is prohibited,electric motors only. The overnight mooring or beaching ofboats is prohibited.

(14) ATV's are prohibited. Off road operation of any vehicle isprohibited. Horses are not permitted in the camping area.

(15) DO NOT MOVE FIREWOOD! You could be spreadingpests and diseases that kill our forests! Afirewoodregulation is in place to protect our forests and prevent thespread of invasive pests and diseases. Do not transportfirewood over 50 miles or without a Self-IssuedCertificate for Transport and Possession of New York·Sourced Untreated Firewood for Personal Use form.Tickets can be issued if the proper paperwork is notcompleted to clarify the origin of your firewood.

(16) Violation of any provisions of this notice shall be grounds torevoke the permit and remove the violators from thecamping area.

Hunt's Pond State Forest

The Huilt's Pond State Forest campgroundoffers 12 designated campsites near the watersof the 50 acre Hunt's Pond. The camping sitesare primitive, with few improvements. No feesare charged for camping, however, a permit isneeded and available from the NYS DEC officein Sherburne. Hunt's Pond State Forest islocated in the Town of New Berlin, ChenangoCounty, New York and is accessed from Hunt'sPond Road. The forest is a 1,383 acre propertymanaged by the NYS Department ofEnvironmental Conservation for multipleinterests. The Forest Stewardship Council andthe Sustainable Forestry Initiative have certifiedthis acreage in the interests ofmanaging asustainable timber resource while protectingwildlife habitats, cultural resources, water,recreation, and economic values. Hunt's Pondis a 50 acre water impoundment containing awarm-water fishery of largemouth bass, yellowperch, brown bullhead, chain pickerel, and rockbass. Wildlife includes numerous species ofwoodland and aquatic birds. White-tailed deer,coyotes, red & grey fox, raccoons, red & greysquirrels, and beaver are some of the mammalsliving in the forest.
