1997 In association with the UT Foundation Distinguished Lecturer grant ($4000; see Grants:
University-Funded, above), organized a colloquium by Dr. Sally Wolff-King, Assistant Dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences and Adjunct Professor, Department of English, Emory
University, Atlanta, Georgia. Using information from her recently published book, "Talking
About William Faulkner," (which focuses on the use of geographic "place" in Faulkner's work),
Dr. Wolff-King presented a colloquium entitled, "The Geography of Faulkner's Landscape."

1996 In association with the UT Foundation Distinguished Lecturer grant ($4000; see Grants:
University-Funded, above), organized three campus presentations by Alison Howman, Deputy
Director, Institute for Water Quality Studies, that included: 1) "Gender: Is it an Issue in South
Africa?" presented at a University Women's Commission luncheon; and 2) "Remote Sensing and
GIS in Water Resources Management: Experiences from South Africa," a colloquium presented
under the auspices of the Department of Geography and Planning. October/November.
Attended the "Vic Falls Conference on Aquatic Systems and International Symposium on
Exploring the Great Lakes of the World (GLOW) Food-Web Dynamics, Health and Integrity,"
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. July.
In association with the UT University Women's Commission, guided two Department of
Geography and Planning graduate students' (Grisel Marrero and Chris Schlutt) development of a
22-foot display on women travelers placed in the Student Union for Women's History Month.
Due to the development of this display and her high level of interest in the project, subsequently
arranged for Chris Schlutt to be the invited speaker at a University Women's Commission
luncheon on March 13. The title of her talk was, "From Buttonhooks to Hiking Boots: Tales of
Women Travelers." Finally, due to the professional quality of the display, the management of the
Student Union asked for permission to leave it in place two weeks beyond its prearranged
removal date.
