Why lies Afraid of Wafer

Standing on the bunk of the river Sunday watching old Father ot Waters ashe rushed madly past them a group ofprominent business men of Hickmanwere discussing previous visitations ofhigh water tho damage done and theprovable extent and damage of the pres ¬

ent rise After the subject had beenpretty well exhausted one of the afore ¬saidIto change the subject

Jim why is it that you are so power-fully

¬

afraid of water except for external

useItwas a matter of common knowledge

that the gentleman addressed had neverbeen seen to quaff a glass of aqua purathat his supply of the stuff with whichiiint juleps were made was never exhausted and that he was a trifle proudof the record he had made as au abjurerof water In consequence all ears werecocked to catch the reply to his ques

tionerThereis astorv hesaid connected

with the abhorrence and fear I entertain for the drinking of water that goesback many years and which would notprove of much interest I take it toyou all who ale mostly young men andhave had little experience with theworld

of Darlne

The night effects of the Expositionwill be a symphony In color The ex-

hibit buildings will be bathed In pure

white light which will bring out Intostrong relief their beautiful outlines

and the richness of the tints and muralpaintings on their screen walls I

Chief Henry Hustln who Is head ofthe department of electrical design hascharge of this important feature Act

lug In the same capacity at Omaha andBuffalo he set so high a standardthere that his effort to outdo It atSt Louis Is the supreme one of his

lifeBy Ingeniously contrived lights thowhole picture will be flooded ait nightwith changing hues At one time thescene will be a harmony of violetchanging Into amber emerald crimsonand amethyst running the wholegamut of color combinations so skill-

fully¬

that the spectator hardly will beconscious where one color leaves offand the other begins But through allthe changes of colors thrown on thobuildings it will be possible for thocascades to retain a distinctive tint

Mercury vapor lamps are cleverlyconcealed in the bases of the sculp¬

ture lining the sides of the cascadesthe rays being thrown from concealedreflectors through small windows Atan angle that will not meet the visionof spectators from any point of viewIn this light the waters of the Cas-

cades¬

will have the appearance at onetime of a ghostly phosphorescent tortrent at another moment of floods ofopal gems and again of a cataract ofliving flame

Every source of the wonderful ka ¬

leidoscopic effects will be Ingeniouslyhidden It will be possible to pick outdifferent parts of the hill and its>

structures In different colors Thuswhile tho hall In the center will bet-

a rose color ono arm of the colonnade orange the other violet and thetwin pavilions emerald the wholesplendid effect will be attained withoutconfusion of colors

The night effects on other parts ofthe site have not been forgotten Anelectric fountain that will be a thingof beauty and a riot of color surpass ¬

ing anything of the kind ever designedwill occupy a +v> Int of vantage on thegrounds The exhibit buildings atnight will appear to be giant cornicesof white light supported at the fourcorners and the centers by immensepavilions of light The rest of thefacades will be so treated that theirmassive columns will be silhouettedagainst tho screen walls which willbo banks of blazing white 118111r l

Inventionc

The exhibit of the United States Pat-ent Office at the Worlds Fair willshow a series of models designed torepresent Ideas that have made epochs-In tho industrial history of the world

So far as possible the first thing ofIts kind in every line of human inven-tion will be shown For Instance visI-tors will have an opportunity to see-

the actual sewing machine which wasthe first practical contrivance of Itskind ever constructed It was patented-In 1846 by Elias Howe Previously In1842 J J Greenough had obtained apatent for a sewing machine whichcarried the cloth along automaticallyhaving a needle with a hole in the middle

Equally Interesting In its way is theearliest typewriter which was patented by C Thurber in 1S42 The typekeys are set around the periphery ot-

a horizontal brass wheel and In or-

der to print a letter it is merely necessary to punch one of the buttonswhich causes the type to descendthrough a little tube and make a markupon a slip of white paper

The exhibit will Include a model ofthe first castIron plow which was pat-

ented¬

by Charles Newbold in 1797 andthe first screw propeller which wasinvented by Robert Hook in 1680

The invention of the steamboat Is

credited to Robert Fulton yet in theseventeenth century Denys Papinlaunched on the Seine In France a boatthat was run by steam It is a matterof historical record that the riverbarge men smashed Papins boat be-cause they feared that It would In¬

jure their businessThe most interesting of all models

however In the line of aquatics willbe that of Abraham Lincolns famousdevice for lifting steamboats oftshoals

Another exhibit will be the firstprinting press and harvesting machinethe latter made in 150 B C
