IBM Cognos 10 Introduction to Report Studio and Cognos Workspace Advanced
©2006-2015, Carol Olsen & Associates, Inc. 13 Confidential. For Internal use only. This guide contains proprietary information.
Notes Preface
Course Setup This course requires that each workstation have Windows XP or Windows 7
as well as a web browser, preferably Internet Explorer, version 7.0 or
greater installed. Please refer to the Cognos website for the most current
details regarding patches, required browser settings and any other browser
requirements.
All IBM Cognos 10 software should be loaded and configured on a server to
which client workstations have access. All data is published to the server
and security is defined to allow users access to the data. It is
recommended that the server be installed, configured and tested prior to
class. Students must have access to Report Studio and Cognos Workspace
Advanced for this course.
This course uses the THP Data Warehouse and Member Coverage
packages. Users may require additional security to see and use these
packages. In addition, data sources that supply information to these
packages must also be configured in IBM Cognos Connection. Users must
log on with their network id and password. Please refer to IBM Cognos
documentation for security recommendations and if necessary, consult the
instructor prior to class for more information.
As noted above, the packages and reports for this course must be
published to a public folder that is accessible to students and the
instructor. Students must have the ability to save reports to My Folders or
a similar protected folder, but students should not have the ability to
overwrite existing packages or reports.

Notes Course Data Prior to class, the student data must be installed and packages and reports
published. As noted above, data for this course is based upon the THP
Data Warehouse and Monthly Coverage packages. See above for specific
workstation setup.
Course Structure This course is a 2 day introductory and intermediate class. Breaks will be
provided at the discretion of the instructor.
The course is a combination of lecture, demonstration, and independent
workshops. The instructor will lead students through demonstrations to
illustrate the previously discussed techniques. Each chapter also includes a
series of independent exercises designed to allow students to practice the
techniques they have just learned.
While IBM Cognos 10 is accessed through a web browser, there is still
security controlling access to its contents. Students are required to log on
to IBM Cognos Connection in order to analyze information or view reports.
Based on job function and security, each student will have access to
specific reports and information in a work environment. All students will
have the same security access for training.
All activities in this guide identify one possible solution to solve the
business scenario. In practice, there are many ways to solve the same
problem. This material may be used as a reference; however, IBM Cognos
continually updates its technical requirements and recommendations and
these should supersede any information noted in this training guide.

Notes Report Views A Report View is a linked copy of one report saved in another location. You
can create a Report View from any existing report saved in IBM Cognos
Connection.
You may modify a Report View to include your preferred prompt response.
A report view is a logical choice for duplicating a shared report and storing
your preferred responses in your view of it.
If your administrator deletes the source report, the report view will no
longer function properly. Report views may be created only in IBM Cognos
Connection or the IBM Cognos Viewer.
You cannot modify the structure or formatting of a report view.
A report view can be useful for users who wish to save their preferred
prompt responses to a production report.
Create a report view.
Click the Create a report view button next to the specific
report.
Change the report view name if necessary.
Select the appropriate folder or other location.
Click Finish.
Once the view is created, select the Properties button to
modify its properties.
From the Run Options tab, if needed, select Set Prompt Values
and choose the prompt responses to save with the report view.
Click Ok.

Notes Why IBM Cognos 10? IBM Cognos 10 uses the latest technology to deploy an easy to use
reporting application to large groups of users. IBM Cognos 10 provides
centralized reporting, which allows users access to standardized data.
Because IBM Cognos 10 is entirely web-based, it requires no software
installation on each desktop, making deployment and upgrades easier to
manage.
IBM Cognos 10 includes several components: IBM Cognos Connection,
Cognos Workspace Advanced, Cognos Workspace, Query Studio, Report
Studio, Event Studio, Analysis Studio, Metrics Studio, Framework Manager
and more. Only administrators or data modelers will have access to
Framework Manager, which requires installation on the administrator’s
desktop. The available studios or products are dependent on both
licensing and security at your organization.

Notes What is Cognos Workspace Advanced Cognos Workspace Advanced is a simple reporting tool designed to make
creating reports from both relational and dimensional data sources simple.
Its functionality is in between Query Studio or Analysis Studio and Report
Studio. Users can create various report styles including lists, charts, and
crosstabs with filters, calculations and conditional formatting.
This new product replaces IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Express. Its goal is
to make developing reports easy for business users.

Notes Why Use Cognos Workspace Advanced Cognos Workspace Advanced is designed for business authors who require
formatted, detailed and somewhat advanced reports that exceed the
capabilities of Query Studio and Analysis Studio. These users, however, are
not professional report authors with knowledge of SQL, MDX and advanced
reporting techniques.
This product will allow users to create the same or more advanced reports
as in Query Studio and Analysis Studio as well as add more detail and
formatting. Use this product for production quality and dashboard style
reports.

Notes Developing Data Models for IBM Cognos 10 All studios in IBM Cognos 10 require that data models are designed to
allow users to create effective business reports. IBM Cognos 10 uses two
data modeling tools: Framework Manager and Transformer. Each is used to
create a different type of model and produce a package or cube from
which users design reports.
More detail on each type of model and each data modeling tool follows.
-

©2006-2015, Carol Olsen & Associates, Inc. 39 Confidential. For Internal use only. This guide contains proprietary information.
Notes Framework Manager The administrative component for IBM Cognos 10 is Framework Manager.
This requires a separate software license and most organizations do not
provide this software to more than a few users. IBM Cognos
Administrators use Framework Manager to create a comprehensive
business model which references tables in data warehouses or other data
sources. These models are then used to create the data packages used to
create reports in both Report Studio and Query Studio.
Models may include subjects, calculations, filters and more. For more
information on models and Framework Manager, refer to Help in IBM
Cognos Connection and Report Studio.
Only administrators or data modelers may change the model or make
modifications to the packages by using Framework Manager.

Notes Packages Packages are business focused subsets of a data model. Packages are
unique to IBM Cognos 10 and are required in order to create reports or
queries. The same packages are used for different studios or products.
There are three types of packages:
Relational
Dimensional (not currently used at THP)
Cubes (not currently used at THP)
Often packages address only a portion of the entire model and may contain
data from multiple data sources. For example, a Monthly Members is a
portion of the model for the Tufts Data Warehouse and it contains data
originally sourced to the data warehouse from both the TAP Master and
Diamond systems.
You must select a package from which you will create a report. Reports are
derived from one package only. You cannot create a single report from
multiple packages.
Relational and dimensional packages do not contain physical data, but
rather, they point to the data sources, providing access to the most current
data available when running reports.
Dimensional packages and cubes support drill down and drill up
functionality.
Each package is created by an administrator in Framework Manager or
Transformer (cubes only). Packages cannot be modified by the end user.
Notice the special folder.
Which indicates this is a
package or cube.

Notes Cubes A cube is a structure that stores summarized data multi-dimensionally.
Selective transactional data records are gathered, summarized, organized
and presented in a way that is useful to answering business questions.
Your administrator packages data into cubes, also called OLAP cubes, multi-
dimensional cubes and Power Cubes. From these cubes, you can create
reports and analyze data quickly and efficiently. Cubes contain summary
statistics based on transaction data records. The data model in
Transformer determines what is included in a cube and Framework
Manager is used to make cubes available on the web.
Cubes are static and must be updated periodically to reflect new data.
Cubes are often updated once per week or once per month during off-work
hours. The actual update cycle may vary by cube and is determined based
on business needs by the administrator. While the cube is updating, you
cannot access it. As a user, you cannot add, delete or modify the structure
or elements of a cube.
Each cube is comprised of dimensions and measures. These components
of a cube are discussed in more detail on the next pages.

Notes Relational Package Model Components Each relational model package contains a set of folders, called subjects.
Most subjects are groupings of related data, often coming from the same
table. For example, an accounting package may have accounts receivable
and accounts payable subjects.
Each subject usually contains one or more attributes/subject items and/or
identifiers. The attributes and identifiers will be used to present the data
in your report. For example, Time may include Month and Date. Other
subjects, like Products, may include Product type.
All attributes and identifiers will be available within any studio or product
that supports relational packages. Each subject and attribute or identifier
has its own property sheet identifying key characteristics including its data
type.
For more detail about a data item, right click on the data
item and select Properties or Lineage. Or, view the screen
tip.

Notes Definitions: Measures Each relationally modeled package will include subjects, subject items and
measures. Measures are performance indicators or numeric items used
with subjects to describe your business.
Measures may include:
Count of Members
Product cost
Count of Subscribers
A measure may be sourced directly from a column on a database table or
may be derived or calculated by the administrator.
Measures are easily identified by their ruler icon.

Notes Definitions: Dimensions Dimensions are available in dimensionally modeled packages and cubes
only. They are descriptive data items organized in a hierarchy (Year,
Quarter, Month). Dimensions have levels and will support drill down from
one level to another (for example, years to quarters).
The example below shows what the GO Sales dimensionally modeled
package would look like in the source tab of Cognos Workspace Advanced.
In the example below, dimensions include Time, Products, and Retailers.
Levels are visible by opening these dimensions. Measures are not
dimensions. The view shown below is the Metadata Tree view.

Notes Definitions: Levels, Members and Sets Levels, members and sets are unique to dimensionally modeled packages
and cubes. Levels represent a part of a dimension’s hierarchy. For
example, Year is a level in the Time dimension and a hierarchy.
A member is a single value within a level. For example, 2007 is a member
of the Year level.
A set is a collection of members. For example, 2007 and 2006 form a set as
doe Camping Equipment, Tents, and Putters. The contents of a set do not
have to come from the same level or the same dimension.
