We would like to present a paper on ICT for achieving Millennium Development Goals orunder Leveraging Technology for Transforming Standards of Care across Nations.
On the 1st topic the Abstract would be: Using technology as an enabler for mobile field health
workers to tackle MDG 4 & 5
The globe faces a common set of issues pertaining to healthcare, with differing degrees of
severity based on the geography we live in. With growing forms of illness that manifests
from either age, genetic disposition, economic & living conditions a common theme that
emerges is that, existing models of care are likely to be insufficient in handling the disease
load. Countries would need to focus more resources on preventive and primary carebeyond the hospital either at the community level or in the home of the beneficiary. Based
on the need we have seen different models of care evolve. We would be referring to two
such models, both focused on how technology could enable MDG 4, 5 and 6. One such
model is operational in the Capital Territory of Lagos, Nigeria while the other is
operational at a Taluk level in Maharashtra.
Empowering Mobile Field Health workers at a Taluk level, Maharashtra, India: This project,
running for the past 9 months across 107 villages covering 330,000 population with 9 PHCs, aims at
empowering the health workers in the field, while improving their effectiveness in the field in screening
and surveillance of their beneficiaries. The healthcare project with inputs from the ANMs, SHSRC anddomain consultants from Indian Institute of Public Health initially aims to show that technology can help
pregnant women stay healthy and deliver healthy babies. Local health workers use mobile technologies(netbooks) and our screening software to identify high-risk pregnancies early on, before complications
develop, then refer women for further diagnosis and care. The ANMs develop schedules for visits and
generate reports that align to the MIS requirements at sub-center (registers) and MIS requirements of the
state. In addition, the solution enables immunization tracking to help stem drop outs. The next phase of
the project is to ensure automation of all the 18 registers to enable faster information retrieval, algorithms
that would provide trends to ANMs about the status of their beneficiaries, SMS gateway to enable theANM to correspond with beneficiaries and the PHC doctor. On a parallel track, efforts would be made to
develop open standards based, self paced e-learning content for ANMs that would not just build capacitybut enable assessment of their skills for targeted F2F trainings.
