I | Introduction
The Exhibit
Innovative Design features twenty-six pieces of work produced by nineteen DiDA designers during the 2011-2012 school year. The exhibit is the product of a partnership between DiDA and the Duke University Union Visual Arts Committee—the first of its kind at Duke. Because of its novelty, rather than curating this exhibit around a specific theme, we have decided to highlight the diversity of work produced at DiDA. Analog works, such as massive painted plaza boards, are juxtaposed against digitally-produced designs. Ephemeral products, such as flyers for one-time events, co-exist with more permanent specimens ranging from apparel graphics to logos.

About DiDA
The idea that became the Duke Innovative Design Agency (DiDA) took root only four years ago. During the Spring 2008 term, freshman Alex Reese (T ‘11) and OSAF creative projects coordinator Valerie Schwartz observed a need amongst Duke student organizations: such groups were constantly coming into existence, changing, and expanding, but they also frequently struggled to brand themselves and market their events. Schwartz and Reese assembled several focus groups to elucidate the best way to address this dearth of marketing and design resources in the Duke student community. At the end of Spring 2008 they hired the first generation of DiDA designers. That summer OSAF was renovated, and the iconic blue cube was constructed as the primary office for DiDA operations. The following fall semester, DiDA opened for business.
2012 designates a landmark for DiDA. The students who were freshmen when DiDA debuted in Fall 2008 are now seniors—there are very few Duke students who can remember a campus before DiDA. What was once a sapling of an idea is now an entity that (to newcomers) appears just as entrenched as many other offices of student life at Duke. Beyond putting down firm roots in the Duke cultural substrata, DiDA has also flourished as an agency. The organization now consists of well over thirty members with skills ranging from painting and graphic design to photography and web development.
